I remember Phyllis Hyman. She could sing, but I can't lie, I couldn't stand her songs. I was a kid though, just wasn't for me. I remember a picture of her in JET when she was younger before she gained all that weight, she was pretty fine, big boned.

My family and friends? Sure, I've been very upset when my grandparent's and some friends have died, but celebrities? Nah...just not that important to me.Comment

100 % agreed. Can't stand how much time the media spends talking about a celebs death. Entertainers, entertain people. Nothing more. Some people don't have any perspective.Last edited by mgoblue678; 06-28-2009, 03:30 PM.My Teams

Dead or alive, don't make any difference to me just like if I dropped dead tomorrow, they wouldn't care about me.Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
I don't think the effect is direct, in that, people have personal relationships with them (unless, of course, you do). It's more of a signpost --- the signaling of a loss of how a time period was in your life. I'm older than many of you guys here on these boards and the older ones can relate to this, but I think that seeing entertainers from my parents era and those who entertained me as well are hard to see go. It shows the fraility, and relative brevity of life as well as taking away a small piece of a portion of your life. Along the way, day-to-day we work in their personas, parts of their acts or their songs and even tidbits of their personal experiences ..... and when those go away, you lose a bit ..... not the same as your family and friends, but you lose something.Comment

Things affect everyone differently. People cried with MJ died and got really upset. For someone like me who really enjoyed MJ in his youth, I was surprised to hear his passing and watched the info on TV about is passing for a good 45min after I got home from work, but that was about it.
It's definitely strange to see entertainers of my youth die as it is a sign of getting older and moving on, but I'm sure watching a parent die is an ever more dramatic sign of getting older and 100x more difficult to handle.Comment

Hunter S. Thompson, hands down. Even though he basically went out on his own terms, it just ****ed me up to know that I would never read anything new from him. GOAT.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

There's some truth to that...although now that I'm older (32) I don't think I can really work anything these celebs do into my daily life anymore!

I think the other notion is that celebrities and professional athletes have seemed to "devolve" over the decades as more and more narcissism has crept into the picture; talent has been watered down in all genres; value of a celebrity's worth seems more directly connected to their paychecks. Look back on entertainers and athletes from those earlier eras and tell me they didn't earn just about everything that they got for the most part. They were easier to respect: entertainers seemed to be more professional about their craft and athletes played FOR their fans, not just IN FRONT of their fans.Comment

Derrick Thomas' death hit me pretty hard. He was my favorite athlete growing up and still is to this day.Twitter

I love this new OS sensation.
If no one's death has affected you, do you really need to waste your time typing a response to the thread? I mean, what's the point of even responding."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
True enough, people do die everyday, and I do feel bad when I see stories on the news about kids being murdered, psychopaths going on a killing spree, or freak accidents, etc. It is a little different when it's a celebrity you've seen on television all the time. They've basically been a part of you growing up. I'm not saying I was crying and bowling over in tears, but to feel no sympathy whatsoever means you're a cold-hearted person.
Just to add to the list:
Bernie Mac - For one, he was a hometown hero, one of my favorite comedians ever, and his funeral was like 10 min from my house.
Johnny Red Kerr and Norm Van Lier - The voices of the Bulls, and to lose them BOTH on the same day was like "WOW!"Comment
