Quite easily Chris Benoit. That changed not only the view of Benoit, but of wrestlers, wrestling and sports in general and how numerous concussions could really kill the brain.

John Ritter
Don Knotts
Skip Caray
Owen Hart
It's not about their celebrity status, it's about what kind of effect those who died have had on your life. Ritter, Knots, and Caray were HUGE parts of my life. Three's Company was a staple of my childhood, and those two made me laugh like no other. Skip Caray was the announcer of my favorite baseball team, so obviously I have a special relationship with him even if I didn't personally know him. And the wrestlers, well, I'm a huge wrestling fan, and Owen Hart's death was a definition of a tragedy.Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
I think the first one that got to me was Luther Vandross. That was mainly because during the two months that I was going back and forth to the hospital to see my father before he died, Luther's "Dance With My Father" CD was playing in my car. So I think more than anything, his death brought back the memories of that painful time.
MJs death just left me rocked and shocked. It wasn't because of any celebrity worship or anything like that; his music was a soundtrack to my youth. I was in elementary school when "Off the Wall" dropped, in junior high school when "Thriller" set the world on its ear, and in high school when "Bad" came out. I can hear a song from any of those albums and be instantly taken back in time to one of those periods when I was growing up. So to face his death is to somehow be reminded of how fragile life is and can be. Whereas, when we're growing up, we have this sense of invincibility.Comment

Kurt Cobain.
I was on a ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean through the first half of '94. You tend to get a lot of time to yourself to read, listen to music, and think about life.
It was a time when Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and the like were changing a generation and the loss of Cobain was like a blow the gut. We didn't have the 24 hour news cycle out there and barely had an internet connection.
We were a bunch of young guys that all felt the effect of losing the face of a movement.Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
When I was younger, (29 now) I was absolutely devastated over Owen Hart's death. He was my favorite wrestler and he was a GREAT person. As someone else said, that was the very definition of tragedy. I was pretty upset over Dale Earnhardt as well.
Now though these things don't seem to bother me as much, I was a little upset about Nick Adenhart's death, but to be honest when I heard about MJ and Billy Mays I wasn't affected in the least. I liked MJ's music when I was younger just like everyone else, but I don't know, I guess I have to many other things to worry about now. SO I do agree that age could play a part in how you feel about these things.Last edited by PVarck31; 06-29-2009, 12:39 AM.Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
I definitely hear what you are saying. There are a lot of things I would like to chalk it up to, but I think a lot of the people who say celebrity deaths don't affect them are flat out lying, plain and simple. Here we are, on a sports gaming site full of people who are pretty much dedicated to following their favorite teams, sports personalities and the like, but yet they are so cold they are not affected by someone's death.
Actors in Hollywood, musicians and such aren't the only ones considered celebrities. It goes for your favorite sports hero too and even some of these game developers a lot of people fawn over here.
Cebby, you trying to tell me if your favorite Wizards or Auburn Tigers player/personality died suddenly you'd just be like "Ah well, I only cared about his talent, screw his life." You trying to tell me you wouldn't care if Bo Jackson or Agent Zero up and died today? Tebow(lol)? That's pretty cold blooded if not.
Being affected by the death of someone doesn't mean you sat in a dark room all night crying. It could simply mean you felt saddened by the loss. Hell, it could even mean you were happy about the person dying, you were still affected. For the people who say celebrity deaths don't affect them I'm calling bull****.Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
Only seen it once and I think it affected a lot more than many realized is Dale Earnhardt.
Also Kurt Cobain has to be mentioned as well, he was so Iconic, and along the lines of Kurt I'd include Layne Staley.
Those are the three that really hit me, others I have had some big thoughts about but those three are on a level of their own, due to what they had done and what they very well could have gone on to do.Last edited by mrpotatohead5; 06-29-2009, 01:10 AM.Comment

Darryl Kile, pitcher of the St Louis Cardinals.
I remember waking up that day and turning on ESPNews and hearing about that. I was rocked pretty hard most of that day. I mean, he was scheduled to start against the Cubs that day too. I remember Joe Girardi coming out and announcing the game had been cancelled.Originally posted by CardsFan27This is the 3rd time John Calipari has been to his first Final Four! What I'm Currently Listening ToComment
