Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
I definitely hear what you are saying. There are a lot of things I would like to chalk it up to, but I think a lot of the people who say celebrity deaths don't affect them are flat out lying, plain and simple. Here we are, on a sports gaming site full of people who are pretty much dedicated to following their favorite teams, sports personalities and the like, but yet they are so cold they are not affected by someone's death.
Actors in Hollywood, musicians and such aren't the only ones considered celebrities. It goes for your favorite sports hero too and even some of these game developers a lot of people fawn over here.
Cebby, you trying to tell me if your favorite Wizards or Auburn Tigers player/personality died suddenly you'd just be like "Ah well, I only cared about his talent, screw his life." You trying to tell me you wouldn't care if Bo Jackson or Agent Zero up and died today? Tebow(lol)? That's pretty cold blooded if not.
Being affected by the death of someone doesn't mean you sat in a dark room all night crying. It could simply mean you felt saddened by the loss. Hell, it could even mean you were happy about the person dying, you were still affected. For the people who say celebrity deaths don't affect them I'm calling bull****.Last edited by trobinson97; 06-28-2009, 05:09 PM.PS: You guys are great.

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
I was pretty bummed when Farley died, and I know i'd be really bummed if some of my other favorite actors/comdians were to pass away.
But I think the only ones that would make me feel truly sad would be Obama and Clint Dempsey. I know Dempsey is kind of a weird one, but I'm a diehard U.S. Soccer fan and have been following his progress for years, and with us both being from Texas I just have a weird connection. I think those are the only 2 celebrities.
Bill Maher is another guy who has influenced me quite a bit, but he does seem like such a prick I wouldn't feel as sad as I would with these other guys.Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
How could I forget the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. I was supposed to see him at the BB King House of Blues in NY for a New Year show and he passed away just before it. I did get to see the Super Freak before he passed away at the BB King House of Blues in NY. Man I guess I better hit these shows whenever I can with these entertainers passing so fast these days.Comment

I'll just drop it here since my views are different from the typical celebrity worshipping culture.Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
Lest we forget, the first sentence of this post was about people being "too cool" to not be affected by a celebrity death so it's only natural for some to post about it not affecting them.

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
Zero as of today, but if The Tebow left our world, it would not be the same. And that's the truth. I'm a 33 year old man I am not afraid to say it. I'll stretch and say any young athlete that I admire (highly talented or not) is taken away from us is a pretty sad event, but I can put it into context and swiftly move on. Family, friends or colleague is a different story and obviously a higher priority with a greater connection.
If Michael Jordan passed away when I was a young kid, I would have been devastated.
Edit: LOL at Cebby. I didn't even read your comment until now as I responed to the OP. Cool topic.Last edited by J-Unit40; 06-28-2009, 09:54 PM."Hard work beats talent, when talent isn't working hard.”Comment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
If Ben Roethlisberger or Troy Polamalu died tomorrow, it's not going to change my thoughts. I'd say they both had good careers playing for my favorite NFL team, both won 2 SB's and both died too young. Nothing more, nothing less.
It might be an age difference, but it seems some of the older folks are the one's stating that they wouldn't be affected by a celebrity death. Maybe we're too consumed with watching our kids/families grow older and feeling the affects of our own bodies aging that when a celebrity dies, it seems like just another day.Comment

How about the simplest solution. Not everyone thinks like you and you're simply being overly sensitive about it?Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
Only Aaliyah and now Michael Jackson.
Aaliyah, though was mostly for that night. I remember watching the news and going to bed listening to one of her albums.
MJ is still hitting me hard. That dude was everything to me when it came to music. Everytime I hear one of his songs, a piece of me just breaks down over the realization that he's gone. I know he was pretty much irrelevant in music today with no current top hits, but knowing that he can't ever sing those songs again is just painful to me.
He is music to me and music is a part of my life (even as much as I hate a lot of it today). To not have the celebrity that made music such a huge, positive part of my life on this earth anymore hurts. It hurts me a lot and I don't know when I'll be able to think about Michael and not want to cry."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Celebrities Who's Death Affected You
Not to go too far off topic, but I remember crying in my bedroom as a teenager when Magic Johnson held press conference when he was diagnosed with the HIV virus. That was a sad day for me and the man is still living and living well.
I also recall a lot of people brought down by Kurt Cobain's death."Hard work beats talent, when talent isn't working hard.”Comment

I don't think age has anything to do with it. I'm older than Cebby. I have kids/family as well but I'm not so wrapped up into them that I can't feel sadness when someone who isn't related to me dies. Doesn't matter if they were a celebrity and I didn't know them personally; if they made an impression in my life, it affects me when they're gone.
I'll put it like this, if someone were to post here that you or someone else died, it would affect me. I'd rock an RIP mjb2124 avatar too.
