If every single Lostie was in the church then I could have an easier time buying it. But the fact that only certain characters were there waiting for Jack so they could walk into the light together - that's stretching it way too much for me.
Not just every single lostie, but everyone that was significant to the losties. They should have had it be a big room with tons of people inside. I know Kate loved Jack, but she went through a lot stuff to get back a toy plane from an old friend and killed her step dad for her mom. I'm pretty sure those two people were important to her also.

      Why is this a shock?

Again, I can sit there and look for things to complain about just like the rest of you. As I mentioned, they never explained the smoke monster. When MIB was thrown into the light, why did he become the SM? Desmond can withstand it, but in the same vain Jack shouldn't be able to withstand the light, right? Notice he was "thrown" and in the same position MIB's body was when Jacob found him dead.

It's all left for interpretation. People complain when the answers are spoon fed to them and they complain when it's left open ended.

Oh well. I enjoyed it. Won't see a show like this again for a while.

I dont think I was coming off as being shocked by it. I just dont think it was needed that late in the game. For the most part I enjoyed Lost, but I looked at the show as more of an adventure than a "soap opera" type character driven show. When I watched lost, I wanted to see Jacob and find out what the smoke monster was, that is what captivated me. I understand they arent going to please everyone and Im not totally disappointed.

I am sure after another watch or 2 Ill like it even more but initially I just was hoping for more i guess.

2 years ago I read something where the directors said after watching the end of the series, you can go back and look at the show for the 1st time again and see it completely differently and I can say right at this moment that that is not the case. There was no moment at the end fo the show where "everything made sense"

We know what happened to Michael's soul - he's trapped on the Island whispering.

Ecko, Ana Lucia, all of those characters didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Ecko's soul found its peace while on the Island and he was "punished' by the Smoke Monster while there, ending his journey.

And truthfully, I can't think of anyone else that was missing, other than Miles, Alpert and Frank. Maybe I'm just forgetting someone, though, so I'd be interested to hear who else you wanted to see in there to buy that it wasn't just Jack's.
        Thats another big mystery...

        I'm so confused..

I didn't really care who was in there or want certain characters to be there, but there seemed to be no logic or consistency to who was allowed to be there.

On another note, I agree with this critic's analysis..

Which brings me back to L.A. and the way it all ended. Kate took Jack to the church where his father’s funeral was to be held, and everyone who’d been having memory flashes all night had gathered there. Jack found his father’s coffin empty and turned to see Christian standing there, which is when Jack remembered that he’d died on the island. He flashed to waking up outside the falls that exit the cave (in the same place where the original Man in Black’s body washed up, and don’t think I didn’t wonder if Jack was gonna become an incorporeal cloud), then slowly staggering to the bamboo forest and laying down to die as Vincent ran up to lie with him. The church and that whole world are apparently a kind of transitional afterlife, like an interactive purgatory, that the Oceanic survivors made (?) to find each other after death. (Did the bomb do it? Somehow?) There’s no passage of time there, so the few “days” that have passed since their flight landed have all unfolded differently depending on your earthly point of view: Jack died on the island and went there, but Hurley and Ben lived for who knows how long on the island before dying and arriving there. (The exchange in which they talk about how much they enjoyed working with each other hints at some amazing stories.) This world exists as a place of comfort for them to discover each other again when they’re ready because, as Christian says, their time on the island was the most important time in their lives.

To which I can’t help but say: Yes, and? I have no idea how that special post-death pre-Heaven place got built, but its impact would not have been lessened if it had only been introduced tonight. So many intriguing possibilities about the dual timelines — will one destroy the other? Is one more “real” than the other? — were left to rot when it was revealed that the Los Angeles story had no connection to the main plot and no purpose except to function as a gathering place for the people who had been on the island to find each other again after death. (Which doesn’t explain why Penny was there.) It would not at all have changed the story to have this epilogue in the finale and tie together more threads in the main plot like Jacob’s cabin, the ghost of Walt, etc. This episode works in theory and looks great on paper, but when you try to place it within the larger context of the show — let alone have it serve as the series’ final word on everything — it doesn’t quite fit.

Honestly, I’m still digesting it all. I will say it again, for those in the cheap seats convinced I’m a heartless monster: I enjoyed the episode, and I loved getting to see so many broken hearts made whole again. So help me, I got a little misty at times. But when I step back and tell myself to really think about things, to use the brain that Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have wanted me to use for six years, I can have no other response but to say the episode fell short of the scope promised in earlier years. The finale would have served a purpose for a more limited show — granted, a corny one that wanted to go out like a soupy redo of The Five People You Meet in Heaven — but it wasn’t enough for “Lost.” This was a show of action and adventure, science fiction and romance, mystery and mysticism, and moments of pure poetry. The finale felt like a casual abandoning of everything the show used to cherish. It worked in the moment, but it falls apart in the light.
I didn't hate the finale at all but I definitely can't call it brilliant or amazing.

lol truthfully I will bet they got everyone they could get. I bet whatever characters weren't there, had something else in "real life" going on. Its prob something to that effect.

I thought it was very interesting when Terry O'Quinn said that he played all of Season 5 having absolutely no idea that he was MiB. He thought he was simply a very pissed off John Locke.

I think that man deserves heavy consideration for an Emmy. No one had to switch roles so frequently, basically play two different characters in the same series, like Terry did in Season 6.

That entire quote covers it all for me. I liked it because he made it much easier for me to understand the purpose of the flash-sideways. I actually get it now. But, much like him, I still don't see the need for it.

Nor was it right to go "bully" and take shots at those that felt disappointed by the ending. Why smack down on those that just want more answers? But I'm sure someone will come and go "truth" and there we have it. I'm one of many Sopranos fanatics. Die hard fan. But people were disappointed how it ended. Disappointed in Seasons 5 & 6. It didn't bother me and I didn't go attacking people. And if can separate yourself and step back, yes, Seasons 5 & 6 were pretty "meh".

The first two seasons of Lost were kick-*** awesome. They really were. Had me feeling like a nerd, looking up theories and junk. I was hooked. But I always wondered how they would tie it up. I didn't think they would just leave it sitting there. Oh well.

Comical. Haven't watched in 3 seasons, catch the last 5 minutes and damn it, now the other seasons were disappointing?

Those saying that you were backtracking were obviously right at this point.

But who really cares? I know I don't. Complain away.

Yup, that's exactly it. Makes sense, but really what's the point of it especially since it took up so much of S6.

Oh well.
I feel like Lost season 1 and 2 was more of the original producers path, and lost season 3-6 was more of the other 2 guys, Cuse and Lindelof. You can see a shift in the shows plot and central idea. To me this is where the show failed. Was the final a good episode. Yes it had great acting and great emotion and a decent script. Was it great in the grand scheme of Lost? To me, no. It showed that season 1 and 2 really played no purpose. In the grand scheme of things i can't really see black vs. white, good vs. evil. All I see is people die and eventually they move on to a better place.

On another note, I agree with this critic's analysis..

I didn't hate the finale at all but I definitely can't call it brilliant or amazing.
That critic hit it on the nose, imo. The episode was great by itself. But you sit there and think about...you go "Wait.....what happened to the rest of the series?" lol.

I do want to say, I understand the ending...I do. I actually kind of appreciate it in a way. My disappointment is that I wanted to believe they knew what/where they were going with all this from day one and they clearly didn't...

I feel like Pete1210 and Money99 in some ways. I was very happy with the ending and couldn't really ask for more as I had an assumption since the beginning that they were dead and trying to find their way to the afterlife. Where I am very disappointed and can't let this go for some darn reason is in how much Seasons 1-3 are their own set of stories and then Season 4-6 are a different direction. I see where Money is coming from this standpoint and has always been my beef. The season finale of Season 3 was awesome and that ending still gives me chills down my spine...........I think it was Longhorn that posted this several pages back.

For me it began with the mystery of the island and all the scientific storyline wrapped around it. It had me intrigued with The Others and how there was a big deal about the other side of the island. With each passing season I got more enamored with the characters and felt an attachment to them and what would happen next.

I went to bed last night just trying not to think too much about this finale, because the road getting there was a very bumpy one. There were several times I almost gave up on the show and my wife stopped around Season 3.......so this was a show I went solo on. LOL! Now she wants to watch all these from the beginning and give the show another chance. I don't mind going through this again, but I might just be more pissed in a way with the disconnect between the first half of the show and the second half.

This was an enjoyable ride and one of the best shows I have ever seen that was a convoluted cluster- along the way. I think like many have said, the writing team ran out of ideas when it came towards the tail end of Season 3. It's over with and lets hope that the next time a show of this stature arrives on TV that it isn't as convoluted.
