If it had been a Castaway show we would be talking about how crazy it was in an episode that Locke fell down a cliff. Instead we debate on why Locke's body has been taken over by an ageless man/smoke monster hell bent on running the Island.

Yankee, that was when the official word from the actor that plays Libby was "I will neevr come back to lost". She has since signed on to be in season 6 so we might actually get to find out what that was all about.

Let me rephrase my original thought. I believe the idea of a plane crash on a mysterious island was the main idea. The island was meant to have other people and a monster. I do not believe the smoke monster was the original idea, maybe a monster of sorts, but not the smoke moster. i can buy into the idea of previous inhabitants, and scientific research, but I think they changed the idea of what was really on the island as the show progressed.

The show was always intended to have a sci-fi element to it.

The series began development in January 2004, when Lloyd Braun, head of ABC at the time, ordered an initial script from Spelling Television based on his concept of a cross between the novel Lord of the Flies, the movie Cast Away, the television series Gilligan's Island, and the popular reality show Survivor...

...Unhappy with the result and a subsequent rewrite, Braun contacted J. J. Abrams, who had a deal with Touchstone Television (now ABC Studios), and was also the creator of the TV series Alias, to write a new pilot script. Although initially hesitant, Abrams warmed up to the idea on the condition that the series would have a supernatural angle to it

The one thing that people can complain about is the time travel IMO. I have a hard time believing that it was in the initial plans for the show, especially considering how big a part of the show it became.

I remember during the first season, we were told that everything could be logically/scientifically explained.

Go back to the first season, remember Ethan with super speed and strength? That hasnt really been explained, and no one else who was human has done those things since.

I think if the writers came out honestly and said they were writing this show on the fly, people would be pissed.

That is true, it's a question of perspective. Writing and viewing wise neither is alternate really, although you could argue since we watched 5 seasons of one reality then the other, where the plan didn't crash, would be the alternate. Semantics though really.

Reading that. I've come to the theory that both timelines in some way shall resolve themselves in the EXACT same way. They may not get there in the same path due to circumstances, but i truly believe now that the same people will die/live, situations resolved the same.
I'm probably totally off though. The next few weeks will tell if i'm on the track though.

I agree.

I think they'd prefer the title of "Separate realities," as in....what's happening on the Island is really happening in that reality, and then what's happening in LAX is actually happening in that reality. Neither is the alternate to the other, they're both going on at the same time and are both completely real depending on which reality is the one you're in.

Jesus that confused me typing it, I really don't even know if that made sense.

Lionsfan - that's the vibe i got too, sort of like Final Destination movies...and if you know much about alternate reality theories, you probably have also read the theory of self-correcting timelines, where every fate is decided but how you get there is the difference....like for instance if you're destined to be super-rich for 11 years only and then lose it, you will have that occur no matter what decisions you make financially...you can change the circumstances of it but not the inevitability of it.

It will be interesting to see if that theory plays out. If for instance Anna Lucia is gunned down in the alternate reality in a cop shooting, at about the same time frame as she was gunned down on the island. Things of that nature.

With Ethan, you could probably come up with a semi-reasonable explanation for his abilities, either natural (a superbly-trained athlete) or supernatural (as far as I know, he was the only Other who had actually been born on the island itself).

Mikhail, on the other hand...ya got me.
