    Re: Dexter (Season 4)

Just watched the latest episode. Although it dragged a little bit it revealed numerous new twists and story lines which will only help the second half of this season. Can't wait for next week.

Seymour - maybe Gandolfini has just chosen not to be in any more roles? I know what you mean (I can't watch that show starring the girl from Seinfeld because I think of her only as Elaine) but doesn't Michael C. Hall being successful in Six Feet Under and now Dexter show that if you're a good enough actor you can break out of a role?

Also, I can see why some folks may not like Six Feet Under, it's an extremely introspective and slow moving show.

Michael C. Hall's character on Six Feet Under never approached the iconic status of Tony Soprano. I watched SFU at least 10 times and still don't know the characters name.

I doubt it. the guy has to make a living and he is an actor always wants roles and he was the lead voice role in that kids movie which of course means you don't see his face so he looks like he does want to work.

Like someone said the SFU role is nothing compared to the Dexter role for Hall. When the show ends he will have a much more difficult time with stereotyping unless he plays similar roles in movies which Gandolfini may have to resort to for starring roles in movies or TV.

Price to pay when you're too damn good in a role that you seem destined to play. But then again without Dexter or Tony Soprano neither of those 2 would have a much of a career to begin with so they will always have that on thier resume which is more than most actors can say.

How do you figure? Six Feet Under had much better ratings, more awards, was on a much more prestigious network (especially at that time). Hell, SFU garnered better ratings than The Sopranos for a while there.

The Sopranos was much more widely watched than Dexter, and the Dexter character hasn't grown into a pop culture icon as Tony Soprano had, so I definitely don't see a parallel. In fact, most people I know would connect Hall to David Fisher above Dexter including people who have seen both and I know several who never could watch Dexter because they couldn't see Hall as a completely disparate character.

Really? Then you must have different taste in friends from me because everybody I know associates Hall with Dexter much more strongly and some even forget he was on SFU, including myself. He was a part of an ensemble (albeit a big part) on SFU (sounds like we're being rude to each other, doesn't it). Fisher was not really a memorable character more than the show as a whole was. It was the sum of it's parts that really made it good.

Obviously if some of your friends won't watch Dexter for whatever reason or only watched a couple of shows thejn they can't connect with it. If you watched all the shows of SFU and Dexter then it's hard to beleive most people would not associate him being Dexter very strongly because he's that good in it.

Alot of people who I recommended start watching Dexter said the 1st thing after watching "Oh it's the gay guy from SFU" And they were fans of that show but don't even remember the character's name, it's not that iconic. I doubt after Dexter's done people will say of Hall's next project. "oh it's that serial killer guy from Dexter". It will be like saying it's the grumpy guy from All in the Family if you saw him on another show.

Part of Gandolfini's issue though isn't just the fact that he's "Tony Soprano", part of the issue is that he simply looks like a gangster. Michael Hall doesn't particularly have a "look". I think that's true for a lot of stereotyped actors/actresses.

Yeah, it threw me off when one of the FBI agents referred to Tony as "Barney Rubble" in the episode where rumors spread that something was going on with him and Adriana. He was not only born to play a gangster, he was born to play that part.

Indeed. Dexter hasn't had a worthy foil since Doakes "left". Quinn is weak sauce.
