Martin does a good job of keeping you guessing. Yes, any character can die. Other characters somewhat in the background step forward and completely new ones that haven't been mentioned before show up.

Also characters can change. Some that you may hate now, you may not hate as much later, or vice versa.

The story only gets better. Seriously. Book 2 is better than the first. Book 3 is better than the previous 2. Do not let Ned's death stop you from watching the show or reading the books.

I'm really not sure who you are talking about. The only person I can think isn't all that likable at all.

I would assume Stannis. I agree he's not all that likeable a person, but I like his character.

As someone who has just started reading the first book but watching the series as it airs....

HOLY ****! I was straight-up "Nah, he's gonna get up and save himself, show these Lannisters what the Starks are made of." Then slowly "Whoa, they aren't really gonna kill him, are they?".... "What....."..... "**** THEY JUST WENT THERE!"

I did not see this coming at all. I'm sad, but I'll continue watching cause it's just so damn good. This just makes me want to wait for season 2 before I eventually read book 2 though. If I had known of this happening coming in, shock value would definitely be low to none.

I hope Robb kicks some ***. Though I have a feeling you book guys are laughing at us for being so optimistic.

you do realize that if you read the books there would still be shock value, it just would have happened at a different time. When, you know, you read the books!

In fact, I'd say the shock value is greater when you read the books, because you are able to develop more of an emotional connection with the characters when you read the books (its the nature of the medium. The books feel much more "personal" than the show because they have more time to develop the characters and motives).

Either way, no matter what order you enjoy the story in, there will be shock value the first time you experience the twists and turns

I must say that was a shocking episode! I was waiting Ned's little daughter to wake up from a dream or something, or for HBO to cliffhang the outcome till next week, boy was I surprised. I just hope this isn't one of those series that just make you wonder "why did I watch this crap", when it is all said and done.

I need closure on certain people, like that little b@#$ard Joffery has got to get it! He, littlefingers and the mother. I will keep watching, but man, Ned's demise was hard to take.

It's not all doom and gloom. Yes there are quite a few expected and unexpected punches to the gut, but 'bad guys' die too.

When a character you care about gets in to a dangerous situation, you are going to feel it because you know Martin will kill anyone off.

Of course there would still be shock value in the books. As I've mentioned throughout this thread though, I want to watch the show blind, i.e. not know what's going to happen.

From what I've read so far of the first book, I've learned a lot more than what the show has shown. Now I'm only debating whether I can hold-out until season 2 starts or will my eagerness 'cause me to scrap that plan and read ahead before season 2 shows.

Well that is good to know. First Ned's daughter's wolf dog gets it, then Ned's son gets crippled, then Ned's right hand man and all his house gets slaughtered, then Ned get's betrayed, then is little daughter if forced to wander the streets like an orphan, then Ned gets beheaded, in front of his homeless daughter! It's been a bad month for the Starks. I'm like, where is the balance? Who is writing this, M. Night Shamalan? lol.

I will keep watching just to see where all this is going. I just hope it gets more good guy friendly.

Eh I was talking Stannis but I can see the nonlikeable point. We're getting into book territory now though and I really don't want to spoil anything coming.

I think for those of us that haven't read the books, Ned's death was more painful and shocking because the show is kind of accelerated from the books. In the book, you read most of the relatively large book before Ned dies, but in the TV series, we are nine episodes into the show, and BOOM main character's head comes off. (I just starting reading the first book)

I kind of want to wait until next week to say this, and my opinion may change based on next week's episode, but this point, although I have loved the show so far, the last few weeks have been more frustrating to watch than anything else due to Martin's determination to completely avoid any conventional traits of the genre.

                                Stannis Stannis Stannis.

He has been mentioned a dozen times in the series already. Its not a spoiler.

I tried to start a separate thread for just series talk 9 weeks ago and was going to keep this one for book talk and future season casting and the mods locked that thread.
