People who've read the books knew that Game of Thrones wouldn't be your typical TV show. Those who started with the show found that out by episode 9 -- emphatically if I may add. Believe me, I was shocked too since I only started reading after the season ended. I stuck with it and I'm sticking with it because the greater narrative is, well, great and to give it up 'cause of one character would be a shame.

One character does not define the show or the books -- characters do.
But in the first book, and even more so in the show, Ned Stark is the central character of an ensemble cast, especially with Sean Bean's great performance. I hadn't read the books when I saw the first season (I'm now on the third book), and I had the same reaction when I saw the show. For a couple of days, I didn't want to watch it anymore. I did however, and I'm glad I did, as well as read the books, but the reactions, especially for people that haven't read the book is certainly warranted I believe.

Definitely. He had so many screwups. I think he confused being noble with being stupid.

I reacted the exact same way. I thought something, anything, would happen because "It's ma'h boy, Ned!" Our hero. And.....nothing. I was stunned, but I got hooked into the show's story even more.

I never really got the same feeling of Ned being the main after reading the first book. Watching the show first may have skewered that view a bit knowing what happens but I certainly felt that A Game of Thrones was a Stark-centric book but not necessarily a Ned-centric one.

So I'm almost done reading A Game of Thrones and am seriously debating whether to start the second book. I'm leaning towards not continuing reading. I think I'd rather be surprised and not know what's going to happen.

I loved watching the first season not knowing what was going to happen. If you can hold out until next spring, I'd go for it. I was weak, I'm already halfway through book 3, but I'm kind of sad that I won't get that holy s*** experience of the first season of the TV show not knowing what's going to happen next.

Yeah I'm going to hold out until season 2 starts next spring. I want to watch and be on the edge of my seat like the first season.

Lol I am facing the same dilemma. I have all the books and have just started the first but I'm really enjoying it and will find it hard not to jump straight into book 2 once I'm finished this one. But it's more enjoyable not knowing what twists and turns lie ahead on the show as well. Decisions decisions.....

Usually I'm a book fiend, but I'm definitely not going to read any of the books until the T.V. series is over.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Seeing that I love the books so much (and I'm only reading Book two right now), I'm going to buy this series on Blu-ray (though I haven't seen Season one yet).

                        I don't usually buy DVDs or Blu-rays. Mostly a renter. Is Amazon's pre-order price of $54.99 reasonable for a Blu-ray season set?
