Think I actually like Miley minus the crazy. Same goes for Kanye.

Enjoyed the event, that's all I've got for now fresh off the in memoriam segment on the left coast. RIP to some amazing talent.

Nothing was technically wrong with the performance, it just seems on such a big night you might bring in a bigger act.

Very entertaining show, but I'm almost angry at myself for watching it. It's amazing to have the old years and the recent years all together on one show because it highlights just how ****ing terrible it all is now. The last 10 years or so of this show are visibly, tangibly worse than what came before it. And that's not nostalgia talking, as some people might think. Plenty of great music nowadays, for example. Comedy on SNL and elsewhere? Not so much. Luckily what's funny is timeless.

I disagree. I feel that every era is "way more terrible than what came before it". The 90's we long for now actually got ripped at the time.

About the 40th anniversary show though, I really enjoyed it. One thing that boggled my mind was Eddie Murphy. He didn't do any jokes or anything funny. Why even bring him back just to have him say "What's up?". Give the fans something....

I would think those in charge over at SNL gave him free rein to do whatever he wanted. Him only giving a short speech was most likely his choice.

I both agree and disagree with this. I watched a ton of episodes in close proximity over the course of the VH1 Classic marathon, and I come away still feeling like the show as a whole has always been hit-or-miss, but that the hits of the past are so much higher than anything that hits today.

Outside of SNL's control, the market on this type of comedy is so splintered and so accessible that it hurts SNL to have their show at the end of the week. We can make fun of any current news story at any time, post it to YouTube and get a million views before SNL even goes live. The immediate access to other outlets (professional and not) doing that has hurt them recently. But it's only the topical stuff like that, that is out of their control.

Flip side - what is in their control, and what they're dropping the ball on most right now is that most sketches come off as people reciting a script for five minutes as opposed to performing it. Combine that with a lot of sketches also appearing over-produced (in terms of lining up camera shots and other effects) and it comes off too sterile. The 'live' aspect doesn't seem to mean as much.

Jerry Seinfeld's joke about the rumor that Brian Williams was part of the original 1975 crew was great.

Probably not in the sense that we would view a legend (little sustained mainstream success). But I do think other comics really respect him.

To me he's funniest when he's in conversation whether it's talking with other comics on a talk show or podcast. I would say that Conan segment with him ripping on Courtney Thorne Smith's movie with Carrot Top (while she's sitting right next to him) is legendary.

^. My favorite talk show appearance by Norm by a mile. Chairman of the Bored always gets me.

The SNL special is being replayed as I type this. One skit I wished they did one more time is another Bill Brasky.

Personally, the original "not ready for primetime" cast (Belushi, Chase, Radner, etc) were the only funny ones.

Sure, there have been some funny skits over the years since (Church Lady, Wayne's World, Mr Robinson's Neighborhood) but the original show, every skit was hilarious. Even the satire commercials.....the Newsdesk.....etc. Kept me in stitches for the whole hour.
