budget for everything together would be around $1200 give or take. I think led would be preferred

solid choice 50" (Vizio) for $700 if you want built in wifi and smart (no 3D)
      http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E500i-A1...ords=50%22+led

Panasonic 55" not smart and only wifi ready
      http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Comparable Samsung or Sony LEDs are in the upper $900 to $1100 range

In terms of soundbars, I'd start with this from Sony combo (one of the few with HDMI inputs) $188:

        Ouch, recommending a Vizio...

Anyways, we have a 47" LG LED for 579$. You could pair that with a Bose Cinemate System for 599$ and be under your budget or go with a Polk soundbar for around 350$.

That LG is a steal right now and sound is important to me. This LG gives you some room to get a good sound system and get a good tv. Vizios aren't highly recommended for videophiles and are strictly budget TVs.

Thanks for posting the information above. I have been looking for a 46-50" television for our living room and this Vizio looks like it fits what I want. I don`t really need or want 3D at this time. Just wanting to upgrade in size and wanted 120hz. I have an older 40" Vizio in the living room right now.

One question I have is what is the difference between LED and LCD? Also is one better than the other?

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I'm currently looking for a new TV, probably will buy one in the next few days. My budget is current $ 700 not including taxes. So far I've looked at these two tv's.

            http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...61684b2990en02

I was wondering which one would be better for gaming and sports, and also which one would be beneficial in the future.

            Thanks.

Go with the LED. Gaming wise, refresh rate won't matter unless you go with plasma. If you play on game mode it displays in 60hz and if you don't you experience a ton of input lag. Sports wise, the LED will reduce motion blur better than the LCD panel and has better contrast ratios. The LED is also more fit for the future because it will last a lot longer than a LCD panel.

Like I said above, Best Buy has a 47" LG for 579$ right now, a slim LED display...

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I just got the Samsung ES6003 model from Futureshop, I had the 46" from Bestbuy, but didn't want to regret going bigger so took it back and got the 55" from future shop for $899 Canadian - the 46 was $699

both are very good deals and have since gone up a bout a hundred each I think.

LED BTW. I was shocked and how black the black levels can get, but the picture especially exterior day-time shots are STUNNING! I have some corner light bleed and actuall was thinking of returning the whole thing because I had a bit of clouding off-centre. I actually massaged it with the blue rag the TV came with after reading someone did that on the internet and to my amazment, ALL of the clouding is now gone. All I have is slight light bleeding in the corners but it's very minor. The only other negative that I'm still fiddling with picture settings is I'm finding some of the really dark stuff looks like it's crushing to black. I know I can see detail when I change my viewing angle so it's not like the detail isn't there I think I just need to boost the back light. Too bad professional calibrations cost about 300 bucks!

So this TV isn't smart of 3d which both I don't care for since I plug in a portable HD right into the TV and use netflix from xbox. After sorting out my mild clouding issue I'm absolutely pleased with my purchase. The picture is outstanding and playing videogames on it is a blast too. I sit about 11 or 12ft away and I'm glad I do, because one draw back would be that if I were too close to this vibrant TV it would probably be irritating.

Overall UN55ES6003 I'm pretty pumped about I've been using for about 2 weeks now. Very good option, sound is even OK for such a thin TV (weighs about 30lbs!!) but I'll probably get a sound bar or do something in the next month or so. I recommend!

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

So, I returned my Panasonic P50U50 50" Plasma because I just couldn't get past how dim the picture was. Even with the lights turned off and watching in the basement. Sports in particular were just too dark. Movies looked exceptional, but regular tv viewing also was dim. I played with all the settings and nothing helped.

I spent $59 more (had a $45 BB certficate) and purchased the Samsung 51" Plasma for $699. I did some research and found out that while the Samsung might not have the blackest of blacks, their panels are brigher than the Panasonic Plasmas. Yes, it's still not as bright as an LED, but the colors, motion, etc. along with sports and regular tv viewing are phenomenal.

On a side note, tonight I picked up a Logitech Harmony 650 remote for $80. BEST 80 dollars I've ever spent. I have completely missed the boat on remote controls. Before I was using the tv remote to turn the tv on, the directv remote to turn the dvr and change the channels, etc., and my surround sound remote for turning that on and off and adjusting the volume.

Well, after an easy set up an assigning a couple different activities, I now hit the "watch tv", and the tv, surround sound, and directv all turn on. Everything is controlled from one remote. Even better, I was able to program the 360, surround sound, and tv to all turn on at one time with the tv off. With it on, I can quickly switch over to the 360 by pressing actitivities and 360. I'm in loooooove with this remote and I realize this is pretty much the entry level Logitech remote. Can't imagine what the $250 and $350 remotes do!

We've had our 42" 60hz Vizio for about 5 years now. It's our bedroom tv and seriously, the picture looks beautiful. Really, sports and regular tv viewing are great and I hardly notice the motion blur. Perhaps it's the size and distance we are from the tv, but I have no complaints with Vizio. I see they are now being sold at Best Buy as well.

With that said, I wouldn't dare purchase a tv that's 60hz now. I'm still surprised that they along with 720p hdtvs are still being sold. I suppose if it's a rec room or kid's tv, that's fine. But, a family room or man cave tv, no way.

I'm a plasma guy (1 from LG, 1 from Panasonic) but picked up a budget 1080p LCD to experiment with plex on a Roku XS player.

720's are pretty prevalent at BB on the 32 inch and below screens. I spoke to BB rep and he said, really, the average human couldn't tell the difference with a 32 inch or below between a 720 or a 1080, also said the same thing with LCD vs LED.

We bought our son who is entering college next year a 32 LCD 720 and that will be fine for a dorm room. Couldn't go wrong with the price, $175.00 with rebate from Toshiba.

Phoohawkey. I can see the difference between 720p and 1080i on my 23" LCD. It can't do 1080p, but I'm sure that would mean that 720p and 1080p would mean even more of a difference.

Not saying it's worth or not worth a steeper price upgrade or what have you, but I never like when somebody decides to make a claim that it's impossible to perceive a picture quality difference.
