Re: LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

Does anyone have lip sync issues with the LG OLEDs? I've seen a bunch of posts on various sites of others having the issue, but not sure if it is everyone or a select few.

Here is the situation. I have built up an OLED collection - B7, C7, C8, and now C9. ALL of them have the same problem.

If I output to a soundbar via optical or ARC (to either a Vizio or LG soundbar...so the soundbars aren't the cause of it) - the internal tv apps work fine. Atmos, 5.1, stereo, all sync up image and sound just fine.

However if I use a connected HDMI source - Xbox One, PS4, and they have their sound output set to Dolby Digital or Dolby Atmos, the sound lags behind the video by maybe a half second or so. If I set the tv to output to the internal speakers, there is no lag. If I change the Xbox or PS4 to DTX output...it syncs up just fine to internal speakers OR soundbar.

So it only happens for a connected HDMI device that has a dolby sound output selected and the tv outputs to the soundbar via optical or ARC. Anyone had this issue and know of a work around? I don't mind leaving the consoles in DTX...but with an Atmos soundbar and a tv that can pass through Atmos sound, it seems like a waste to leave the Xbox on DTX...

I went through this with the C7. Nearly drove me nuts. Only solution was to connect everything to the soundbar (I ended up having to buy one with 3 inputs) & only have the soundbar connected to the tv via ARC.

        Hope this helps.

Ok thanks. That was the only way I found to work too. Sucks because not all TV features are detected through the sound bar, so it is a trade off if I want better sound or TV features.

I don't mean to speak on a higher level or anything, but if you truly want much better sound with all TV features and easy-to-control lag, you might want to look into investing in a high quality receiver and speakers.

Of course, that's not necessarily a feasible request. However, I don't have any audio sync concerns since all of my inputs get their own personal synchronization through my receiver.

              That would work, too.

My room/setup works better with a soundbar. I have the Sony HT5000 and it sounds fantastic IMO.

It isn't quite that simple. This soundbar has all the features for video passthrough (including Dolby Vision), but it is a bit more complicated than that...aside from the fact that an AVR + speakers would be tough to fit in my current setup. And I am not necessarily looking for the very best sound, just the best features. The SK10Y sounds pretty good in my ears.

Xbox One has a special encoding for dolby vision (only supported by a handful of AVR and handful of Tvs.) It also has VRR and ALLM through HDMI 2.0, though I guess it is supposed to be an HDMI 2.1 feature, so all connected hardware must support HDMI 2.1?

Either way, these are my current options:

-Xbox to C9, C9 ARC to SK10Y. Xbox Netflix Dolby Vision works, ALLM and VRR works, Dolby Atmos works but with a slight delay.

-Xbox to HDMI 2.0 splitter, splitter HDMI to C9 and SK10Y. Xbox Dolby Vision works, ALLM works, VRR DOES NOT WORK, Dolby Atmos works with no delay.

-Xbox to SK10Y, SK10Y ARC to C9. Xbox Dolby Vision DOES NOT WORK (this isn't on the limited list that supports the Xbox DV), ALLM works, VRR DOES NOT WORK, Dolby Atmos works with no delay.

I haven't been able to find any AVR that indeed works with VRR. I have tested many different items and from my experience it only works when going directly to the TV/Monitor...unless HDMI 2.1 fixes that for sure. All other devices I have tried running through end up cutting in and out.

Though not all features are really needed.
-Dolby Vision - only in Netflix on the Xbox. And I usually use the TV app for Netflix anyways.
-VRR - very few games use it, most are locked to 30 or 60.
-Dolby Atmos - more movies are starting to use it, but from a streaming standpoint Netflix is the only one that does as far as I know, and again, I use the tv app. There are only a few games, and even if there were more, I do the majority of gaming on my office PC/Xbox anyways, not in the family room so it wouldn't matter much.

40ms input lag is very noticeable.... And when playing timing games like shooters or MLB the show it will be even more

Most gaming tvs today have 15 to 21ms of input lag....Going to 40 is a huge difference

I’m going to have to agree with you on this one. I notice it most with mlb the show. At 40ms it’s unbearable for me. Just always late on pitches.

X900F or SM9000? Looking to buy in the next two weeks or so, both TVs are literally a dollar apart in price at Abt. Use is for gaming, movies, and sports all equal weight.

                        Any opinions?

Also, was looking at the Sonos Beam to pair with it but im open to soundbar suggestions too.

                          I'd do the X900F personally.

Basically it comes down to better motion on the x900f vs HDMI 2.1 on the LG, right?

And OLED is always an option, but burn-in will always kind of scare me. My cousin has a C7 and has no issues, but I still dont think i want that risk.
