or something else comparable? I think initially I want to stay close to $600 or under unless it's just worth it in the future to bump up now. I think when I upgrade I'd like to not have to change the receiver initially if that's possible. I need to research all this more when I get to a PC.
A Denon, Sony, or Yamaha 5.1 or 7.1 receiver in the $250-300 range
2 sets of the Andrew Jones bookshelf speakers at $130 for the pair (surrounds)
matching AJ Pioneer center channel for $100
    Bic F12 sub at $180

This set is on the big side, don't know how much real estate you're giving your speakers.

If you're gonna spend $500+ you want to pay a little more and do it right the first time.

My current room is pretty large. About 3,400 cubic feet. So bigger won't be that big of a deal. I'm liking the AJs. I will hopefully be moving from this house soon and I can't imagine the next living room to be this big so it should still be fine.

If you're going to do it right you wouldn't be buying those speakers. About the cheapest tower/bookshelf/center speakers that are retailed.

Don't half *** speakers. It will catch up with you. Might as well spend money on decent speakers if you're going to do it.

That sounds like it would mean putting a 1 in front of my already surpassed $600 budget (now $800).

Any opinions on buying factory refurbished from Amazon (or from another authorized dealer)?

We get that you sell and have high end gear, but everyone doesn't have an unlimited budget. What do you suggest with HIS BUDGET?

What's the point of him having to spend $600 on a system and replacing it 4 years down the road? If you buy the right system you're set for life. I don't cut corners in electronics and I've had two 55" 1080p tv's since 1080p started.

I bought a HTIB 3 years ago and, sure, I could have spent a few thousand, but I didn't spend close to that. It's a decent Yamaha system (actually similar to one posted before) that produces good sound, nice bass, and does the job. If down the road I want to upgrade, guess what, the system would still be good to put in another room, because really, who only has one TV? If he put together a system for $600, or $800, whatever the budget is.

That's like telling someone looking at cars to just go ahead and buy a Mercedes or some high end car that is well over someone's budget just because it's built better when something else will still do the job. If this was a home theater, definitely save the money and do it right. This is a living room. Like the other guy said, help him find something in his budget, don't talk him into buying something 2-3x or more than the budget.

                      It's replacing the Samsung HT-Q100...

I'm all for higher end suggestions, but I can barely figure out the low end gear. I'd be even more confused with the higher end.

Check out the Klipsch sale on Black Friday. Most of their stuff is 50% off and Denon receivers are on sale. If anything, just do four Klipsch bookshelves, the center, and a Denon receiver. You'd be looking at around $550. If you want the sub you'd be around $800.

I get cheap people every day, sold maybe 2 HTIB's and sold many mid to high range systems from people who wanted HTIB's and have made a lot of good friends just because I don't work on commission and I know what I'm talking about.

Sure, he can replace a cheap HTIB and never use it again because once you hear a good system there's no turning back. Also, he'll he rewiring his whole room with an HTIB. If you haven't ever talked to a vendor, they will literally tell you not to sell their HTIB's, especially Samsung, because they have so many problems with them. I've met the Vice President of Klipsch, I've met high Samsung and Sony reps. I'm not some average person that works at a retailer. Take it or not, but there's a reason people come back to me or refer customers to me for any level of system. I know home theater better than anyone in the area.

Obviously you can spend a lot more, just a question of HOW MUCH more...

Taking authentic advice.....If you have an HH Gregg or can get Best Buy to PM the Black Friday pricing you're looking at around $875 + tax for:

                          Klipsch center channel $110
2 sets of Klipsch bookshelf speakers $140 each
                          Bic f12 sub for $180
leaving $300 for a 5.1 receiver and speaker wire

Best Buy is running the deal. Not a door buster, not limited quantities. Also keep in mind, say you do four bookshelves, you can always go with the Klipsch towers next year and have a really good 7.1 system, or use the other bookshelves for a stereo system and still have a really good 5.1 system.

No H.H. Gregg in the DFW area unfortunately. I've seen a lot of good things about them on AVS. I wish I had gotten on this over the weekend. I missed out on the BB rewards members early access sale. Would have made this much less of a pain in the butt.

Amazon is going to have this as a lightning deal tonight
                                http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JF85WE/...d_p=1673666362
If the deal is worthwhile I will splurge extra on the receiver and be set for wayyy down the line if I ever want to go 7.2. It's currently on "sale" for $499.

I am liking what Fry's is doing. Pretty much lightning deals all on Thanksgiving day, but then you can pick it up in store on BF.

I don't think I would have any problem bumping up to $1000 if it meant I was getting a legit $1500+ worth of merchandise. The only thing that looks appealing is the JBL ES80BK floor standing.
