Re: LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

Reading all these tv posts have me even scared to get a new TV, on what to have active, turn on, turn up, etc LOL My set, I plugged my HDMI cables in and it worked. Is 4K and HDR that complicated or just my ignorance on the subject making it more difficult than it should be?

I'm not getting a new TV any point soon fwiw, just curious.

It seems complicated until you do a little research into it. I felt the same way when I first started looking for a new TV, but a couple of hours of research and I learned quite a bit and felt much more comfortable.

I want to call it simple, but I'm betting the average "plug in and watch" household consumer is uninformed enough to the point that they do have some sort of setting off/on that should otherwise be switched.

I'm not talking about calibration, but I mean somebody might be saying "Look at this 4K man!" and they are in 1080p or something crazy like that.

Like Jr. said, a little research and you should be fine. This guy has a great channel in general, but his could of videos regarding HDR are very informational (is mostly concerning gaming though):

Is it more complicated than it should be though? Yes. Why? There is no standard for HDR right now. This will always be tough, even for calibrators, when there is no standard for it or as long as metadata is static at the source and studios aren't grading their source material from scene to scene.

It's not that difficult if you put in a bit of time to read about it in regards to buying a TV.

But let me tell you, they have to get this stuff straightened out better. It was an ugly scene last night at my house with me and the wife trying to find HDR / 4K content and her not understanding that 4K doesn't necessarily mean HDR. Oh and her constantly confusing HD and HDR and not knowing what UHD is...

And then sometimes it's tough to really tell how to find content as well. Each provider, Netflix, Hulu, etc does it different and it's a real pain in the rear. They don't make it easy for sure...

I mean for us techies it's not too hard, albeit I will admit, last night was kind of frustrating, but I can tell you most "regular people" are not going to put up with going through all this.

It's sad to think most people are like my wife and will go spend $1600 on a new TV and then fire up 1080p stuff and think "well looks pretty much the same to me.." because they don't know any better..

Also, like he was saying the hardest part was finding content. Other than select games and movies.. I'm not sure what else is out there. Streaming? You gotta have a pretty good connection.. and you'd be streaming the same select movies.

I don't think it's quite mainstream yet. Does directv or cable providers have 4K stations yet?

I'm in the same boat. My first 4K purchase I hope to be a 4K projector with a 100"+ screen. I spent way to much on a top of the line plasma TV 4-5 years ago and it looks worlds better than the middle of the road 4K TVs.

Streaming was how I thought I'd go but so far it's not looking good, not finding much of anything 4K to stream in terms of newer movies. Plenty of tech demos and things to view, but the fact that Samsung doesn't allow for Vudu 4K means I am going to have to buy a Chromecast Ultra. This is one thing the Vizio would have been able to do from the get-go.

DirecTV does 4K yes and thanks for reminding me, I need to call them.

I'd be the same way, but would love to upgrade my 42" tv to something bigger...If I'm getting something I don't want something crappy, but they're expensive enough that it's not a priority anytime soon.

It can be confusing at first. I did quite a bit of research to learn about the terminology people use (4k, UHD, HD, HDR, color gamut, effective refresh rate, edge lighting, backlight scanning, 'nits', 5.1, 2.1, Dolby Vision, HDR10, etc) and what matters the most. I think I like using "nits" the most of all the new terms.

To be honest, I feel that most people in this thread are incredibly picky and your average Joe Smoe would just go to Best Buy/Walmart/Target/Costco and get a TV they could reasonably afford and be happy with it. Hooking these 4k TVs up are really no more complicated than a regular 1080p unit; it's just when you want fancy sound systems, or are rather picky about image quality, or want a bunch of app usage is when you get into some of this nuance being discussed in detail here. A 4k unit can simply be attach the legs, make the HDMI hookups and go for a lot of people.

Yes but if you do that you're not going to see the reason you shelled out the big bucks. For example on my TV I had to enable the HDR, it's not enabled by default.

That's what I mean that the companies who are making this stuff need to do a lot better because right now they're really just making it for the nerd herd and not the general public, LOL
