Re: LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

Just wanted to say that after a week or so with the Vizio P I am very happy with it. I ran all the tests on it and it passed with flying colors. HDR and Dolby vision have changed the way I see media forever. It's amazing.

Playing games in true HDR is like a whole new game. Madden just looks phenomenal. Ghost Recon Wildlands is simply beautiful.

Sports looks great. I've seen very little judder. Maybe once or twice. The fast action of football and wrestling slow great compared to my old 60hz TV.

So to sum it up, so far I am very happy with my decision to get this TV and I feel like at $700 it's a great value.

A little news about the 2019 Samsung 4K models...

The Q90R is the flagship of the three, and comes in 82, 75, and 65-inch screen sizes. This is a full-array local dimming model with the same number of LED zones as most of its 8K brethren. It has built-in Bixby, and supports the One Invisible Connection and no-gap wall mount.

The Q70R is also a FALD model, but it has local dimming fewer zones than the Q90R. It has built-in Bixby, and is available in 82, 75, 65, 55, and 49-inch screen sizes.

The Q60R is an edge LED dimming model, and comes in 82, 75, 65, 55, 49, and 43-inch screen sizes. It doesn't seem to support Bixby on the TV and One Invisible Connection.

So basically the Q70R is replacing the Q8. Hope that Q60R does really come in the 43 inch size, the Sony 800E has been holding that market for a few years now.

John Archer from Forbes has a Hands-On Preview from CES on the Samsung QLED line.

If what he's saying is true, Samsung has closed the gap in PQ tremendously vs OLED.

This quote stands out to me.....

"In fact, the demonstrations we were given of the new 4K QLED sets (no model numbers were being discussed) revealed outstanding black levels for an LED TV. Better, in fact, than those of the already*excellent 2018 Q9FN range.

There was barely a hint of blooming around stand-out bright objects during our demos either – a result, it seems, of a new local dimming control system for the direct backlighting illumination that’s apparently baked into the TV’s chipset on a hardware level, rather than being ‘software only’."

As someone who's only owned Full Array LD sets including the TV I have now Sharp 65N9000U (240 LD Zones) what's always held LD back was the blooming from the direct backlight. This has always been a software issue through out.

If Samsung has found a way to fix that via hardware, it can be a real game changer...

Scott, wouldn't you say that FALD is the closest thing to OLED? The blacks I get are amazing compared to my old edge lit TV.

I mean I guess. But you can't even really compare those two.

Not sure where you're seeing the Q8 for under $1600. But that would be the one I would get. No Vizio since they're selling customer info and don't give a f about it.

I think he meant the Q6 which is currently on sale for $1,499. The Q8 is still $2,299
