Thanks everyone who responded (won't let me multi-quote for some reason).

I'm not a very big fan of metal, I like more modern rock (stuff like there for tomorrow) and songs with meaning lyrically like "Innocent" by Our Lady Peace (again big thanks to the person who suggested them). Any suggestions?

No problem. One of my favorite bands of all-time. Loved them ever since I heard their song Clumsy on the radio back in 1997.

None of them are metal. The only one that might come close is QotSA, but I would consider them hard rock personally. DBT probably have the best lyrics of those bands listed above.

In reference to that list by Fresh Tendrils and the comment by Jdoug312.

The Black Keys are more blueish-rock than anything else (and really all there albums are pretty good), The Kills I would definitely consider modern rock (I'm not a huge fan of theres before there 2011 album, but Blood Pressures is very good), Dead Weather is definitely rock as well. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in on those bands I am familiar with and good albums to check out by them.

Cool to see my fellow sports nerds into music. I'll post a few of my favorite bands just to add to the discussion.

empire! empire! (I was a lonely estate) - Midwestern emo heavily influenced by the emo bands of the mid to late 90's

Tera Melos - Mathy, punk rock. Nobody is playing anything close to the style these dudes are doing

Deerhunter - Indie rock fused with ethereal electronic effects. Vocalist for this band shops at the same record store I do.

Slint - Post-rock band from the early 90's. Really influential to the genre

The Microphones - Lo-Fi folk rock project by Phil Elverum. If you're into folk and great story telling/experimentation, check this out

Beach Fossils - Hipster *** surf rock. I like it though.

Hot Cross - Post-Hardcore/screamo with dualing melodic guitars. Fronted with great lyrics by vocalist Billy Werner

Algernon Cadwallader - Happy, sloppy pop punk/emo. Heavily influenced by bands like Cap 'n Jazz

Converge - One of the most influential extreme metal bands of all time.

            Liturgy
            - 'Transcendental Black Metal.' Band comes off as incredibly pretentious, but the drumming is unreal and the interplay between the guitars and drums is something spectacular

Submotion Orchestra - Lightly influenced by rock, but more of a jazz/dubstep/soul mix. Soulful female vocals layered over jazz drumming, and deep, rotating sub-bass. It's a pretty interesting combination...but very gorgeous.

            Admiral Angry
            - One of the most pissed off metal acts I've heard in a while

Craft Spells - Happy hipster indie pop. I dig it though.

St. Vincent - Gorgeous vocals, jazz rock, gorgeous girl. I've had the biggest crush on their vocalist for a while.

I would add some more, but I'm feeling lazy right now. Add me on last.fm if you please. http://www.last.fm/user/josephbjackson

Can't say I've heard of the others you mentioned I do like these bands. I saw Tera Melos open up for The Fall of Troy a few years ago.

I really like their song "Life" too, thanks!

Sorry, I'm new to rock music (I'm 17, and I'm black lol) so I didn't really know there was a such thing as hard rock. I figured that sorta stuff was labled under metal . Soo then I guess I like more soft rock (assuming its a genre) like "Good Life" by One Republic, Plain White T's in general, "Pieces" by Sum 41, and I think We The Kings might be my favorite band due to songs like "Secret Valentine", and "All Again For You". I like certain songs by Nickelback like "Photograph", and "Someday" but dislike some of their faster songs. I like alot of Linkin Park and some Red stuff as well. Hopefully that kinda shows my tastes a bit more. Go easy on me, I don't even know what station is the rock station on the radio lol

^ Since you're black, do you thing you would enjoy rock bands with a black lead singer? If so, you should check out Sevendust. Some of their stuff may be too heavy for your taste but the lead singer comes from a gospel/soul background and their sound is really amazing. I was also going to suggest Red so I'm glad you already like them.

If he likes Breaking Benjamin he might like some Sevendust, depending on the song. I really like their song Broken Down:

I know of several other rock bands that have black singers but most are metal bands with screaming, like Killswitch Engage, Sepultura, and God Forbid (in which actually 3 out of the 5 members are black).

One I can think of that isn't metal is Bloc Party, which is indie rock. I like some of their stuff, especially the song Hunting For Witches:

                    <iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CmPNuruWMTA" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="420"></iframe>

And then there's Living Color, in which all the members are black, who can be classified as hard rock or metal, but have no screamed vocals. Their most well known song is Cult of Personality:

And I'm glad you like some Our Lady Peace, Jdoug312. They're awesome.

and also, how could I forget Weezer? Catchy, fun, pop/rock. You'd probably like them.

Tera Melos is mindblowing live. You just made me remember how much I miss TFOT. I jammed them like no other during my early high school years. Saw them live 2 or 3 times, including the last time they came to Atlanta. Chilled with Thomas Erak after one show. He was pretty chill and was nice enough to take a picture with me and talk about their new record.
