I know the Anti-Scalper crowd not gonna like this, but won a EBAY auction for a 3080 1,075$. Wasn't expecting to win and honestly, thought it was a decent price considering.

Need to seem dem Rays in CyberPunk.

I'm trying to scan some old photos from various albums onto a computer.

Mainly just scanning them so I'd have digital versions of them.

Would 300 or 600dpi be best? These are pics from 20+ years ago. I know 600dpi would lead to a bigger file and image size, but these aren't exactly HD quality images I'm scanning, so not sure how much of a difference they'd make.

And when scanning, not sure if PNG or JPG would be best in this case.

Also have to deal with the issue of every dust particle present showing up on the scan which I dont think matters which setting I choose here.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I'm a little confused. It looks like the i5-2500k is better/faster than FX-8370?

Based on 177,727 user benchmarks for the AMD FX-8370 and the Intel Core i5-2500K, we rank them both on effective speed and value for money against the best 1,423 CPUs.

          My current computer:
          i5-2500k
          ASRock Z68M/USB3
          8 GB RAM DDR3 @665mhz
          Geforce 1060 3GB
          500w power source
          Windows 10

Basically I'm looking to upgrade for a few hundred bucks. But with the obsolescence of the LG 1155 socket, I don't think a better cpu is the answer. I'm looking at this custom build for cheap:

I'd keep my ssd's, monitor, and GPU and put them in the 'new' case.

          1. Would this be a significant/worthwhile upgrade?
          2. Is the advertised mobo easily upgradeable with a newer/faster cpu?

          Thank you!

Save your money, davep. That's not an upgrade for you at all and no, the MOBO on the listed setup isn't going to net you any worthwhile upgrades. That machine is a complete waste of money if you're buying to upgrade. It's a lateral move at absolute best but more likely a $350 downgrade. Do not buy.

If you don't have enough for a proper upgrade (talking components that have been released in the past two years here) then keep saving up until you do. OC that 2500k to get as much out of it as you can in the meantime.

Your actual upgrade path will include at minimum: a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. Everything else you can reuse so start looking for deals on those parts. Use pcpartpicker for pricing.

Do you have any suggestions for an easily upgradeable motherboard for the future? What about the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max AMD AM4 ATX Motherboard?

Also since you were asking for guidance about a used pc on Craigslist, you seem to be ok with used. Hardware swap on reddit is a good spot for deals imo. There was just a recent sale on there for a 2700, b450 tomahawk, 16gb ram and a 550w gold power supply for $350. You might not always find a bundle, but you can get some great deals on individual parts

Yes, I'm good with used, thank you for the heads up.

Right now I'm just trying to figure out a good upgradeable mobo. I've read that the x570 can get too hot but the 450 might be outdated already? I think I'd rather go with AMD as it seems like you don't need to switch out entire mobos when they come out with new chipsets, although that's pretty nuanced too.

For what it's worth (and if anyone was in the same situation I was), I ended up getting a b450 mobo with a Ryzen 5 3600. More than enough for me at this point. I'm really happy with the setup so far!

Managed to move over everything from my secondary laptop to a new harddrive, and it works so much better now.

Crazy to think some $40 SSD can make an old laptop feel almost brand new. Boot times before were horrible, and had to basically open a web browser twice for it to open once (if that makes sense).

Cloned the HDD to a SSD, and it loads within 30 seconds or so and everything happens instantly.

Assuming nothing goes on it, this small fix could probably extend the lifetime of it by a few years.

If I knew it was this easy to do, I probably would've bought a different primary laptop years back and just change the HDD myself since laptops with HDD costs way less even with the same specs as their SSD counterparts. Difference in price was more than the cost to just manually swap out drives myself.

I'm in the market for a new laptop, but I'm also wondering if I should be waiting for a "future" laptop of sorts.

My family actually got me an HP Spectre x360, but there were many features on there that I wasn't really interested in using or spending money on. It looked cool, yet I don't know if I was ready then and there to get a new laptop. I still want to see what else is out there or is coming soon.

I like what the Dell XPS lineup offers, and coming out in July will be the 15" 9510 model that will feature an OLED screen. Unfortunately it won't be true 4K (close though), and it uses an Intel CPU instead of AMD. I don't know exactly how much gaming I'd get out of it, but I definitely will be editing in it (both video and using Photoshop) and will often deal with 4K content. I also want to use an HTPC for streaming.

On a sadder note, I know laptops want to be lighter and slimmer, but it's sad what ports they lose these days to make it happen. None of them would ever dare to have an optical drive, say bye-bye to Ethernet ports, and even SD card readers don't make an appearance when it's inconvenient for them.

I'm also wondering if it's worth it to wait until Windows 11 comes out, or if that is an OS to skip in general.

I finally got my GeForce RTX 3090 GPU. It's the ASUS TUF Gaming version. I got picked in the Newegg Shuffle (I couldn't believe it I've been entering those things for months). Only downside is it was a bundle and I had to buy a motherboard with it. So excited right now.

I'm now selling a motherboard lol. If anyone on here is interested in one here is the link:
