Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Motherboard: Spend about $200 less, not that that's a bad motherboard, it's just more than you'll ever need. Right now Newegg has an MSI Z77 board with thunderbolt for $145 after $15 rebate plus it comes with 8GB of ram.

Ram: Covered, so $150 less, but if you don't do the newegg deal only spend around $50 for 2x4GB.

CPU: I'd go down to the I5-3550k, but there's nothing really wrong with the I7, it's just that for $100 more you aren't seeing the gains unless you are doing serious video editing or 3d modeling.

GPU: I would look at either GTX 670 or Radeon 7970, they'll run you about $400, they are neck and neck in terms of speed. It might be worth waiting a few months though, with new cards coming soon.

PSU: 1200w is overkill, especially without an SLI heavy setup. IMO though, don't even think about SLI unless you are a tweaker hobbyist. There is microstuttering with SLI, then you have to deal with some games not set up properly for SLI, then you are waiting for patches and driver updates. I say simplify and go with less money and a single card. A solid 650w PSU will run you a third of what you had, and still be plenty of power for a single GPU system.

CPU cooler: If you are even thinking about going liquid cooling, go ahead and do it now. Get one of the self contained CPU watercoolers, like a Corsair H50

Yeah, Microcenter, if you have one close watch for sales. When I built my PC microcenter would have saved me $150 on the CPU/Motherboard alone.

I was going to post pretty much the same thing as above. The only thing I disagree with is waiting for the new cards to come out, there will always be new stuff coming out so it always seems like you should have waiting just a little bit.

I was specifically going to point out the PSU. No need at all for a 1,250W power supply. Same with such an expensive mobo.

Ugh, my monitor died on me today. 24 inch LG LCD. Really nice picture, 2MS response, really nice monitor while it worked. Unfortunately it's not under warranty anymore. I'm using this old 17" fullscreen HP affair while I look for another and it's like going back to the 90's or something. I remember when I used to think 1280x1024 was great. At least it's more dependable than some of these newer models, this is the second time in as many years that the LG died on me.

Just under four years. I've had the 17" for 10.

Well at least you had a back up laying around the house until you can buy another one. You going to buy the same brand again or looking to go bigger ?

In that regard I don't plan on upgrading for a while. So I have a fairly expensive wishlist, and some of it is close to bleeding edge (but AFAIK none of it actually is). Here's my list:

Case - Cooler Master Storm Series Trooper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119245

                Motherboard - ASUS Maximus V Extreme: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131858

                Processor - Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5 GHz Quad-Core: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116501

                RAM - G.SKILL Trident X Series 8 GB (2x4) 240-Pin DDR3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231595

                SSD - Samsung 830 Series 256 GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147164

                HDD - Western Digital WD AV-GP 1 TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136941

                CPU Cooler - Enermax ETS-T40-TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835214023

                Here are my remaining questions:
                1. Anyone have any experience with any of these products? I pretty well trust Newegg reviews but it doesn't hurt having extra anecdotal evidence of performance.
                2. Any particular recommendations about substitute products for any of these that may be close to matching performance while hitting the wallet less?

I know this is an expensive set-up ($2.4k currently), and it is the first computer I will have built myself from scratch, but as I said I want a system that is seemingly "future-proof" and easily expandable when it comes to that (far down the line). By expandable I mean this setup supports SLI when I desire to install it as well as pretty much anything else I would like to add (more hard drives, decent sound card, etc).

Since I'm still fairly novice at computer construction any tips would be great! Also I've found I can get some of the parts cheaper elsewhere but it won't affect the overall price that much.
Man to be honest, I would drop down of some of that, spending way too much unnecessary money.

Ram - $150 for 8gb?! no... You can get good 8GB ram for $50-70(at most)
GPU - Do what you can afford, if thats the 680 do it.
CPU - I would honestly stick to the highest i5 for gaming. i7 has hyper-threading which can be used for other things, but not gaming. I reccomend i5-3570k best bang for the buck and overclocks superb.
PSU - OVERKILL. Simple. Drop down to something around ~$150 (850w will suffice..), yield similar results.
SSD - Look at reviews and decide if you really need a 256 or if 120gb will suffice. Does not change that much in gaming, load times yes, but not really worth the price of admission.

That is my quick opinion that could save tons of money used for more important things.. new screen? etc..

The best part about making your own PC is that you can pick and choose parts to fit your needs and your wallet. If you are making it for gaming and not much else (no video editing, music production, etc.) I strongly urge you to reconsider some of the items you picked.

Yeah I always keep some back up parts just in case.

I'm still deciding if I should go with LG again, I'm a little wary. It might have been isolated to this model because I'd read online of other people having the same issues with it (Be careful when you turn it off, it might to turn on again). It really did have a great picture when it worked. I'm browsing Amazon and Newegg right now looking over some options. I may go as big as 27" but won't go below 24". If you got any recommendations let me know.

Agreed with all of this. If your going to spend big bucks, spend it on your video card.

Is it possible to build a solid gaming PC for $500? Not looking to run stuff like Crysys 3 or anything.

If medium settings or what I consider PS3 style graphics is cool with you, then yes, yes it is.

Most definitely is. Tom's Hardware posts budget builds all the time. This one is from December, $500 Gaming PC. This $600 build was posted yesterday. You definitely wouldn't be limited to PS3 graphics either, check the benchmarks.

Even PS3 style graphics would be fine for me. There's just so many more games available on PC that I'm interested in, but don't have Mac ports.

Definitely going to bookmark Tom's Hardware. Hopefully in a few months when I have some free cash I can start putting one together.

You could also just type in $500 PC Builds or what ever price range you seeking on Youtube. I think the cheapest build I seen on Youtube was $400. But yeah Youtube is a wealth of information, for me anyway because I prefer to visually see something then read about it.

Finally got my pc working again. After trying to reinstall windows 8 we realized it's the hdd that went out so they sent me another.

Lo and behold i install the hdd and it's already loaded with windows 7, but had some guys profile on it so i couldn't do anything without a password to log in.

I was about to say forget it and redo the entire reformat and reinstall hdd and operating system.... looked at the hint and guessed the dudes password right lol. He had some stream games on it and some other stuff i deleted like divers for alienware hardware and some other stuff lol. If i wasn't honest that guy would be in trouble.

Well since windows 7 is more stable i downloaded all the security updates and just put the w8 disc back in the sleeve and set everything back up how i wanted it and now I'm enjoying pc gaming again only no windows 8

                                Mod time again
