Hmm.. Maybe $1,500? Could go more. Not really sure. It's not a project I am rushing to do, so if I need to spend more i could.

I just want a good gaming pc.

Maybe it would be best if I just bought one already built, even though its cheaper to custom build it.
I had the same reservations but its really quite simple.

Is that amount including the price of a monitor?

Seperate... I don't really know how much to spend, since I'm not sure what I should or shouldn't buy.

Its a great chance you don't even have to spend that much money to be honest, especially since you're doing it yourself.

            Do this

Ask questions... buy the parts, post the pictures

I have a feeling the guys here can guide you through the entire process

            Free of charge of course

It's really not hard at all. For the most part most of what you plug in has a certain spot it can go and it's usually labeled on the motherboard, plus it will come with a diagram.

For $1,500 you are set. My machine is pretty damn good and was only $1,100. This included spending $100 on a case when there are $60 cases that are really good (I wanted a side window and USB 3.0 on the front).

If you go Newegg make sure to sign up for a trial of ShopRunner. Free 2 day shipping. Usually the 2 day trial they turn into a year "trial".

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Yeah, he shouldn't have to spend that much. Just doing a quick search on parts I came up with this.

                Case - Rosewill R5: $74.99 @ Newegg

CPU -Intel Core i5 3570k: $219.99 @ Newegg & Amazon. Can overclock later if you choose.

                Motherboard - ASRock z77: $124.99 Amazon.

                Memory - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB): $54.98 @ Amazon.

SSD - Crucial m4 128GB: Use this for your applications, maybe one or two games. $132.02 @ Amazon.

HDD - 1TB Seagate Barracuda: Use this for everything else. $79.99 @ Newegg.

PSU - Corsair CX750M: Modular means you will only use the connections you need which will help with wire management and air flow. $99.99 @ Newegg.

Graphics - HD 7970: You wil be running everything on Ultra @ 1920x1080. $399 @ Newegg plus Crysis 3 and the new Bioshock come with it for free.

Optical Drive - Lite On DVD Burner: $15.99 @ Newegg.

                Comes out to $1202.92

That will leave you with just under $300 from your original budget to go towards your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Like Nachos said, if you shop from Newegg, sign up for the ShopRunner trial for free 2 day shipping. My "trial" is in it's second year. You could knock off another 100-150 bucks if you go with a 7950 or 7870 respectively instead of the 7970. You will still be playing most games at Ultra or near Ultra with some some tweaks.

If you want to squeeze every dollar out of the original budget plus a little more, Tom's has a $1594 build posted. Note however, that this build is overkill for a single monitor setup unless it's at an extreme resolution (2560x1600 and up). It's mainly for triple monitor setups.

There's also a $1000 build that only uses one 240GB SSD for your applications and games.
                PS: You guys are great.

Pretty much standard and what I would have picked out. Definitely go 7970 or the Nvidia equivalent. The 7870 is great, it's what I have, but since you got the cash go with it. I'm a fan of just getting it all from Newegg instead of jumping around to save a minimal amount, that's just me though.

I need to get around to finishing a PC build I started back in 2011. Hopefully the parts I have lying around are still good.

                      I have the HD 7770

If I want to upgrade to a 7870 or whatever... do I need to replace the fan or anything?

I wouldn't think so. All I have is a 200mm exhaust fan on top and a 140mm in the rear and have never had anything remotely related to a heat issue. I think my case has very very good airflow though. I can put my hand up against the two side vents and feel air being sucked in. Of course adding another $8 fan will be worth it if you are concerned.

As far as anything else needing to be replaced I don't know what the power consumption difference is between the two. Someone else will have to answer that.

No, you'll be good Dre. The 7870 doesn't generate much heat. The newer cards, you really don't need to worry about heat unless you're mad overclocking them. Even still, generally cases with a good "push/pull" setup (bring air in one, push air out the other side of the case) will be fine.

Officially starting my build...gonna have to buy pieces one at a time so it'll take a little while. Scored this case off of Newegg for $39.99:

And the rest of the pieces I'm going to (eventually) get are:

CPU: Intel Pentium G2120 Ivy Bridge 3.1GHz LGA 1155 Dual-Core Desktop Processor
MoBo: ASRock H61M-DGS LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Graphics: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card
PSU: APEVIA ATX-AS520W-BK 520W ATX Power Supply
                              RAM: G.SKILL NS 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
                              HDD: SAMSUNG SV1604E 160GB 5400 RPM IDE Ultra ATA133 / ATA-7 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Not looking for (and can't afford) something that'll do 80+ FPS on ultra settings, just something that can produce a lag-free game.
