What that boils down to is, in a worst case scenario of a short, how much current will the PSU allow through before shutting down. Multi rail PSUs are safer, but really only marginally so until you approach 1000w, and only important if you go over 1000w.

If I was to buy a PSU right now it would be that OCZ you posted.

Before you spend extra for a K processor, are you planning to overclock?

Also, what do you plan on doing with this computer? And how much do you want to spend?

No on the overclocking. I plan on using it for gaming, but I don't need record breaking, high end graphics. I want to keep it in the $1000 range.

Any tips on overcloking a 7870? I assume just use the Catalyst Control Center. What is a safe percentage to put it at?

So I decided to nix the G2120 idea and save up for a quad core. AMD or Intel, what are some good ones? Most I'm willing to spend would probably be $100-110.

You basically need a brand new PC if you want anything higher then low settings for Sim City. For around $400 you can build you a good PC for Sim City and most other games as well.

                  $500

Just some examples how easy and cheap it is if you take your time and look around.

                    For that price.......

                    AMD A10 - 5800K - $130

                    AMD A8 - 3879K - $99

Pretty much you just have AMD for a CPU Quad for under $130. Which is fine for 99% of people.

What brand of PC is it? I am assuming it just a name brand from a retail store. Not sure there is really room to upgrade much on those. The PSU is probably just powerful enough to run the components that came with it. You would basically be building a brand new PC.

I was running onboard sound and it was perfectly fine with the exception of lacking dolby headphone, so I bought an Asus Xonar for $15 and it never gave me any issues either (and sounds really good). Onboard sound has come a very long way.

As for what you should do, I would ask what are you planning to use with your PC? Headphones? Speakers? Surround system?

Oh, another good resource for PSUs is http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page541.htm
they list oem and that's pretty good to know as it's more important than the company selling it under their name.

You could always go with one of the AMD FX Processors. You can get those for <$100, and if you have a Microcenter near you they have bundles that can get you a motherboard for free.

I think u can pick up the 7870 for 209 with 2 free games from Newegg now. I got the power color one for 215 a few months ago.
