Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
I'm so flipping excited for my PC to come however I got a couple of questions:
1. How much Ram is Overkill? I got 2x4gb of RAM. I think I still got more room to upgrade it but was wondering if it's needed?(Image of Specs are a few posts up)
2. I got a case with a built in power supply. Say I wanted to upgrade it down the line would I need a new case + the extra power supply or could I just add the extra power to the one I got?
2. You will have to buy a new power supply, you really couldn't chain them together (not that I know of at least, and if you can it wouldn't fit in the case).Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
I just took a look, that PSU won't run your video card, or at least for very long. It's 12v rail is rated for very low amps (18), the i7 needs 13 amps peak and the video card needs about the same, 12.5 amps, so you pull 27a through an 18a rail and you'll have one dead PSU. Even though they say that PSU is 585w, in reality it's more like 260w.
My 650w PSU's 12v rail is 50a.
You are probably going to need a new PSU.
They didn't have much info that you could see about the PSU, so I found it by itself on amazon: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817339022Comment

Good catch Burns, I didn't even notice it was the case powersupply combo. Those are almost always underpowered for a gaming rig.
Everyone has their own preferences but I am a fan of PC Power & Cooling. Always have had excellent service out of their products and the rails are always rock solid.
This is the one I'm currently running, pulling 60A on the 12 rail

You don't need this much power but this is a solid PS for the price

This is one area I don't skimp on because nothing worse than a cheap PS failing and destroying all your internals. Its not common but has been known to happen with cheap power supplies.Last edited by Phobia; 03-26-2013, 10:20 AM.Comment

After little searching I would take advantage of their End of quarter sale.

I think he runs a 950w supply now.Comment

Yeah, I don't know what PSU my dad had in his PC (ibuypower), but his went out. I came home and booted up the Champions Online beta since my PC back then couldn't handle it. I was running around for like 10 minutes when the system shut down. Blew the PSU, and fried the mobo.

I have never used these split rail setups and not sure how reliable they are compared to a dedicated single rail.Last edited by Phobia; 03-26-2013, 01:09 PM.Comment

From the very little I've heard from a YouTube commentator it seems to be personal preference.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Basically it's just how the over current protection works, single rail pools every 12v device into one single monitored stream of current, multi rail will split this into different monitored streams (so your CPU and HDD might be on one stream, your GPU on one or two others, etc). What that boils down to is, in a worst case scenario of a short, how much current will the PSU allow through before shutting down. Multi rail PSUs are safer, but really only marginally so until you approach 1000w, and only important if you go over 1000w.
If I was to buy a PSU right now it would be that OCZ you posted.Comment

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I consulted you on that. His computer has been straight problematic.
There was a point where any game we tried to play on it would just freeze at some point and force us to restart the computer. We ended up pulling a stick OC RAM and guessing which one to buy on New Egg to bring the computer up to 4GB.
Looking back, I wonder if we matched the speed on those sticks of RAM.Comment
