Consoles are built with TV's in mind and their EDID, PC video cards are not. That is the simple form, its far more complicated than that.

Does your receiver have a HDMI in and out on it. I'm pretty sure you can trick your computer in running 5:1 to the TV if you run your HDMI in this fashion.

Edit: By pass the TV completely.

Nope there is not. The video cards just aren't capable. For PC it's always been optical or sometimes coaxial digital outs off either your motherboard or sound card.

Yeah but my receiver isn't 4K. That's another upgrade down the road unfortunately.

Alright, well guess I'll just have to make due with stereo sound when I game then. Wonderful.

It's issues like this that led me down the console path years ago. PC gaming seems awesome and I love my PC but stuff like this is more complicated than it needs to be.

Wait, I do have a crappy, but competent external sound card that has optical audio (5.1) output. Could I pair it with this long, 50 foot optical cable and just run it alongside the HDMI cabling to my tv and just run the audio directly to my receiver while the HDMI would go straight to the TV?

That should work. That's what I have going. HDMI to my TV and optical out to my sound system. Works like a charm.

Ok, thanks guys. Next step is to replace my 30 foot cable with a 50 foot one at Microcenter. Then while I am there I'll likely just get the optical cable down there and run them both at the same time.

I'm going to use velcro to try to get the cables to stay along the wall. Unless someone has any better ideas. I don't really want to be nailing things to the wall and the cable will not be able to be run under the carpet.

It's not a long path directly, only about 20 feet but I need to go up and down a door to conceal the cable.

I hope all this work is worth it! I'm looking at you Forza 7 PC, LOL

That's true!! My idea to do that though kind of took a huge hit when I went to Microcenter to buy a 4K/HDR monitor and they said there weren't any to buy!

I really don't want to buy a kick@ss monitor without any HDR now that I'm used to it on my consoles!! I hear they are coming soon though so maybe in start of next year that'll be a feasible plan.

You know regarding my sound not coming through in 5.1 I have no idea why I didn't think of it but I just got this email while I was sitting here and it made the little light bulb pop up over my head.

                      Why not headphones??

Btw these are new from Corsair and look super awesome, check em out fellas!

Have you considered going 1440p monitor? I hooked up my pc to my 4k tv with HDR and it looks great but it feels choppy compared to my Asus pg348q. I much prefer to play on my ultrawide than my 4k tv.

Plus you get that extra space on the screen which is great, especially playing FPS and games like Warhammer.

I also was debating this with myself a couple days ago as I was in the market for a 2nd montior to go along with my ultrawide. It was between a 4k or 1440p with higher refresh rate. Went with the PG279Q (27" 1440p IPS 165hz) and will be getting it in today.

Excited to get that, have some games that don't support ultrawide and like to have the options and see if the extra hz is worth it.

Yeah I'm sort of thinking about it and then selling the monitor in the spring but man I just may wait, as tough as that is to do, LOL...

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

System semi-died the other day. I was planning on getting a new one soon anyway, but now with the combination of needing to replace some parts and the launch of the 8th gen intel chips this week it seems like a perfect time to jump in.

I've used cyberpowerpc for my last few builds. Some people hate them, but my experiences have been pretty good. I am tired of spending about $500 just for labor though so I thought I'd try building my own rig. I appreciate any feedback!

Primary use of the pc will be gaming. My last pc was solid (I could run any game on at least high) for 4+ years, and I'd like the same performance/longevity again.

I do intend on having dual 27" g-sync monitors at some point.

                            https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JQhnxY

Absent on this list are the
CPU - Eyeing the i7-8700 as I was very happy with the i7 I had the last few years, and the price jump over the i5 isn't prohibitive.

Cooling Unit - Not sure what to do here. I want to make sure the cooling unit fits perfectly and ensure great cooling performance. Quiet would be preferable, but I'd sacrifice noise before I would cooling (had a cpu overheat several years ago so I am cautious here). I'm considering the Corsair H100i, but I appreciate suggestions/feedback.

Mobo - From everything I've read the Asus Strix series is pretty solid on the z270 platform. They will be one of the few z370 mobos offered at launch so I'm thinking this will be the way I go. I'm not expert at MOBO's though so please let me know how that mobo is/other options.

                            A few other concerns.

Storage - currently set as the Samsung 850 Evo 500gb. A very solid SSD from everything I've read. Though I could upgrade to a 1tb Crucial or Mushkin SSD for another $100. I don't mind spending the money to double the storage, but my only concern is performance. Some people say SSD speed differences are pretty negligible so I'm not sure what to believe.

Power Supply - I'm not an expert on PSU's. I generally find Corsair to be a solid brand, and this one was rated well. Please let me know if there are better performance/value options and/or if there are any compatibility issues with this.

Sound Card - I've stumbled onto some complaints about the on board sound of the Asus Strix series. Can anyone confirm this? I'm not looking to do some music editing or something like that, but I do like high quality sound. If I should get a sound card any recommendations?

I have the Corsair H100i v2 and its awesome. You won't hear a thing and keeps my processor cool. Its a little tight in my mid tower case because the tubes are stiff but with your full atx case you'll have zero issues. I had to place the raditor in the front and pulling in cool air rather than exhausting to the top. Did not have any space to put it on top of my Corsair case but i've seen videos of other mid tower cases that it fits fine on top.

I have the 850 Platinum PSU from Corsair also and have had zero issues.

The sound from my Gigabyte Gaming 8 mobo is awesome. I bump my music pretty hard and I have a soundbar with a 8 inch subwoofer conneted and don't have any issues. I say just try out what your mobo can do before getting a soundcard.

I also have the SSD from samsung and it's super fast, you will not be disappointed and will load up games easy. I currently use a m.2 for my main apps and windows and load all the games on the Samsung.

Well my Corsair h100 v2 is not awesome, it already failed! POS

Maybe guys can help me, i already unplugged it from cpu fan header and plugged it back in and the water is not moving.

i've read on newegg people have had it failed every 8-10 reviews.

If i'm gonna get a new one, any suggestions?
