Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

    Just built a z370 Taichi MB with a 8700K and a EVGA sc2 1080ti

16 Gb or Vengeance LPX 3200 RAM
    500G Samsung EVO 960
    750W Seagate Gold PSU
    Corsair H60 AOI Water Cooler

    27" Dell G Sync 1440p Monitor

Total beast. Will be looking into some mild overclocking in coming weeks. Thought the H60 might be the weak point but so far has kept the Chip super cool running PUBG at 1440p with most things on Ultra.

1080ti Gets to about 70c with my 4 Fan Push/Pull Setup.

Honestly building a PC was amazingly fun. I highly recommend it.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

      Irritation of the day.

Was playing Need for Speed Payback yesterday. Had it going on my 4k TV at Ultra settings (1080ti and a i7 4790k). I have a Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2. It has always kept my cpu at around 30c-35c idle and around 65c-70c when max gaming. So as I was playing for a bit yesterday (I always have MSI Afterburner running on my other monitor) and I notice we are reaching temps in the 80c+ range. Even creeping to 90c+. I was like WTF just happened. Then all of a sudden everything shut down. It got so hot that the safety measure kicked in.

So I opened it up and while there was a decent amount of dust it wasn't enough to cause that crazy temp. I proceed to clean everything up. Make sure all fans are working. Clean the radiator part. Check to make sure the pump was functional. It was all working just fine. So after it cooled down it turned back on. Idle temps were around 40c-45c. Doubled check the pump and fans on the Corsair Link and it says everything is good to go. So I pop the game back on and boom we are hitting 85c+ again. UGH!!!!!

So it had to be the water cooler. I need my PC running at all times. Can't have any down time. So the only electronics store open was Fry's Electronics. I'm thinking I can find something that will work. Was even thinking of getting a nice regular heatsink instead of water cooled. But *** **** was their inventory wiped out man. I didn't even think people went to these stores that often anymore with all the crazy deals you can get online. So my selection of regular heatsinks was just garbage. I guess in hind site I could have bought one for temporary use and then got something else online but I honestly didn't feel like pulling apart the PC twice. Oh well.

So now I'm back at the water cooler selection which is a bit better then the heatsinks but still not very good. I end up going with a brand I have never heard of but had okay reviews. It's a Enermax Liqmax II 240. Basically looks exactly the same as the Corsair. That plus some Antec Formula 7 Nano Diamond paste set me back $108. So I get home, pull the old one out (still can't figure out what is wrong with it), and get the new one installed. Fits nice. Fans are better IMO. Swapped some fans to get a better intake/exhaust set up. Fired up the PC and am sitting between a 25c-30c idle. About 5 degrees better. Nice. Big test next. Fire up the game on my regular 1080p monitor at Ultra settings and play for about 45 min. Stayed pretty much between 60c-70c the entire time with a peak of 74c a few times. Seems like it's good. Did the same test this morning on the 4k TV and had the same result.

So it seems to be fixed. But that was super irritating. I don't think I've even had the Corsair for a year. Anybody heard anything about this brand and or model I got? It's funny because I truly love building PC's. It's fun. But fixing or troubleshooting my own drives me insane lol.

I've seen complaints of the Corsair pumps failing which sounds like what happened. Cooler water isn't being circulated is what it sounds like.

I seen the Enermax on Newegg, but go check out the reviews. I can't remember which model but if I remember correctly some people had problems with them leaking which is a big no no.

My dad decided against going water cooled like me with his Ryzen build and surprisingly his temps are only a couple degrees higher than mine. In hindsight I'd rather have gone air cooled, less likely to fail, less likely to cause bigger damage if they leak, and less fear of keeping your PC on 24/7.

This is exactly the path I wanted to take and I'm kind of kicking myself for being so impatient but oh well. So far so good.

Decided to replace my MB and grab some new tech instead of upgrading my current setup.

In the week or two I'll be picking up:

            i5-8600k 3.6 GHz 1151
            MSI Z370M Gaming Pro 1151
            G. Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 PC4-25600
            HP S700 500GB SSD
            CRYORIG H7 Cooler

            Reusing:

            Cooler Master HAF 912 case
            MSI 1060 6GB
            PSU

Mixture of NewEgg and Microcenter - going to run me about $710. Think I did pretty well price-wise.

Not sure how set you are on the MB but the Taichi z370 has been amazing so far.

Nice I'll check it out! Not married to the MB just thought I'd found a decent board in my price range.

However now I'm wondering about that choice, not realizing the one I was looking at is mATX, Even though my case supports it.

Question for those who are smarter than me. Will the following build make use of the 144hz monitor in my link?

                  https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bG8YdX

I guess that's really my biggest concern with this upgrade: without upgrading my GPU to 1070 or better, will I be able to at least get 1080p at 144hz without needing to lower graphics settings in-game?

I realize that question is relative and almost will always depend on the game. I'm looking for a broad, in general, perspective.

Your probably not going to be getting 140+FPS on most games but it will still look better than a 60Hz/ Plus Monitors last a long time and that will work well for when you upgrade.

A good monitor is a pretty solid investment.

The CPU core war is in full swing. Yesterday Intel announced a 28 core CPU with all cores running at 5ghz. Today, AMD announced a 32 core CPU. Both coming the end of this year.

Are wireless adapters like this worth a damn? I am tired of having an Ethernet cable strung across my living room. I know nothing beats wired, but it's not worth the effort of trying to hide the cable, and I can always hook back up when needed. I do have USB 3.0.

They work quite well as long as your router is strong.

Is the idea that those have better antennas vs. the device itself?

Well one with an actual external antenna work better then those with internal ones. That is what I noticed over the years, those have a longer range. Over all with buying adapters you want to make sure it matches your router. For example it would be foolish to buy an AC adapter but yet your router is only N.
