Also if you want a word processor, spreadsheet, and powerpoint, there is a program called Open Office. It is completely free program that basically works and looks like Microsoft Office. It is a dirty secret that Microsoft does not want you to know about!!

I had Open Office forever until I got M$ Office for like $25. It's good, but the formatting isn't always 100% the same so I would always just take it to school and make sure it looks right for who I am sending it to.

Yeah OpenOffice is pretty solid. It does everything you need, the GUI is just a little outdated.

My professor is convinced MS makes it intentionally become buggy on their system too. I've never experienced that though.

Built my new desktop about a month ago, my previous desktop was purchased in 2005 and all it needed was a new power supply and HDD along the way. Ah, fond memories...

              Here's what I went with......

              New Purchases

Case: Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
              Spoiler

Processor: Intel Core i3-550 Clarkdale 3.2GHz LGA 1156
              Spoiler

Board: Intel BOXDH55PJ LGA 1156 Intel H55 Micro ATX
              Spoiler

              PSU: Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W ATX12V V2.2
              Spoiler

DVD Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner
              Spoiler

Monitors: Acer S201HLbd Black 20" 5ms LED-Backlight LCD (got two)
              Spoiler

From our office I grabbed the following, free of charge.

              - 8 GB Crucial DDR3 (Two 4 GB DIMMs)
              - PCIe HDMI/DVI video card
              - PCIe wireless card
              - 750 GB HDD
              - Microsoft wireless mouse/keyboard

It's good working in an IT shop.

I love the case, plenty of HDD bays in case I want to get a RAID in there some day for all of my media. Dual-booted it with Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7 Pro.

Putting it together was an adventure because it turned out that the RAM was shot and I kept getting no video and no beep codes on boot. I tried just about everything before swapping the RAM because we didn't have any spare in the office the day I built it.

Altogether I spent about $520 and the stuff I took from our office was about $230 in value. I didn't pay for W7 (obviously Ubuntu is free) but just from a hardware perspective you can get a great PC for under $800. If you don't need monitors you're looking at $600.

Ubuntu bailed on Open Office a few releases ago and now comes with Libre Office - another open source option that's very solid.

Download free office suite for Windows, macOS and Linux. Microsoft compatible, based on OpenOffice, and updated regularly.

I cant build a PC but I want one that will play Diablo 3, Arma 2, Company of Heroes 2 and Command and Conquer Generals 2.

Just as a estimate how good of a PC will I need and what do you think the price range would be on it. I wish to god that I could just pay one off in payments.

I dont need a monitor either.....I wish I knew someone that can build PC's.

Only thing that I need is a HDMI input so I can use my tv as a monitor. Wireless internet for it would be nice but isnt a necessity.

Building a PC isn't difficult as long as you're patient. There's ton of write ups and videos and how to do it.

If you're still scared then try CyberPowerPC.

Yeah, dual monitors are the truth but it's problem when you start with one real nice monitor.

Indeed, building one isn't bad but troubleshooting one you build can be a bear. If you don't really know PC's that well and follow a guide to build one and it doesn't work you could be in a crappy situation. Granted there are also tons of message boards to help you troubleshoot it's still going to be a pain.

As for building, basically you need:

                        Case
                        CPU
                        Board
                        RAM
                        HDD
                        PSU

You don't even need to consider an optical drive as a necessity anymore.

How big is that monitor? Can you use it for anything elsewhere?

I haven't read through the entire thread, is your PC used for gaming?

I am the least mechanical and technical person I know and I did. I guarantee with a little searching on the internet for video guides, you can easily do it.

Yes, it can. Since I have built several, I have spare parts that I can stick in to narrow down where the trouble is. For instance, I have several old video cards that I can replace if it appears the video card went bad.
