Maybe one of the children of the Big Three goes to the Dark Side...I dunno. Honestly, I don't really know how you set a story 30 years after ROTJ without either echoing the original trilogy or going in a completely different direction.

I think that's a solid premise and a nice way to create a new story, while at the same time playing off of the original trilogy.

I think the original cast will either be boring 'mentor' characters to the young characters or they could do something special with them. What that is I don't know but hopefully the creators take some chances.

The Emperor and his own father couldn't persuade him to turn evil, but [insert inane new villain here] could? Weak, lazy writing. That's why I'm thrilled Lucasfilm invalidated all of the silly Expanded Universe, which usually just ran counter to the films and consistently tried to one-up the movies.
Some of them were pretty decent, or maybe that's just because I was 12 when i read them...

The only character worth a damn to bring over to the movies was Thrawn. He was amazing.

            The rest was bull****.

I went to Disney's Hollywood Studio during the Star Wars Weekend event and there was so much The Clone Wars stuff I decided to watch the show now that it is on Netflix. There is an official order to watch the episodes if you are starting out fresh like me because if you watch them in numerical order it isn't exactly right. Anyway, the show is pretty good after you get past the quick little one liners from Anakin's padawan.

I went a few weeks ago when they had Mark Hamill, Billy Dee, and Ray Park. Was a great time listening to Hamill tell stories about filming as well as being The Joker, plus Ray Park put on a martial arts demonstration that blew my mind. Really got me excited for the new trilogy.

Clone Wars is pretty good as I've watched a few episodes with my little sister

Not totally apropos to the Star Wars discussion but man, Mark Hamill is a GREAT talker. I listened to his interview a couple years ago with Kevin Smith on his Fat Man on Batman podcast and I just LOVED IT. The guy is a total nerd when it comes to old Hollywood and such AND he has a great respect for the business. I swear he should write a book or have his own podcast. He's that interesting of a guy.

I've never read a SW book but I've been told by others that there is some really great stuff out there - in his words, "Way better than the stories Lucas wrote".

So Lucas completely ignores any and all exterior publications?
Does he have any influence on these new films?

One would think they'd keep Lucas involved at least as a consultant.

I believe Lucas can be consulted on what is and isn't canon, but as far as actively developing storylines, Lucas is absolutely 100% done.

There is a new committee called the Lucasfilm Story Group that approves all Star Wars content and determines canon.

Having read pretty much all the Expanded Universe novels I was a little sad when they decided they were not part of canon. I guess they never were officially canon, but there were 20 years of novels that we all considered true Star Wars. It's a little sad that those characters created have been put out to pasture especially ones like Mara Jade who was an Imperial spy that became Skywalker's wife. They made a broad statement that all Expanded Universe material has been taken away, but I think it is mainly just the post-Return of the Jedi stories. There's some great stories before and during the Clone Wars that have tie ins to the prequel movie trilogy.

That said, I'm looking forward to the new official canon books starting with the new TV Shows Rebels prequel novel called A New Dawn and the first-person style story of Luke Skywalker Heir to the Jedi. They have one more announced as part of the new canon, a book named Tarkin that reveals the backstory of that character. I'm really interested in that one because the author did a great job on a similar book about Darth Plaguis which was basically an origin story for Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sideous.

And Harrison apparently broke his leg rather than just his ankle.
The latest update on the Harrison Ford injury on the set of Star Wars Episode VII is he could be out up to eight weeks with ankle and pelvic injuries.
