This is an interesting take. Never saw it that way.

I think they avoid the word zombie mostly because Kirkman doesn't want it to be another zombie story.

My opinion is the reason no one acknowledges zombies is because no one wants to believe such a thing is possible.

Yes, we've seen movies and stories and have read about them. We mostly joke about the zombie apocalypse arriving. But I can tell you that there are people I know that find the thought stupid because "it's not real."

Whether they are right or not, I tend to believe a majority of people agree with them. How likely is it that people will really think zombies?

The Walking Dead has never been a show about Zombies. It's a show about Humanity, difficult choices and survival.

Is this just random thought of the day?

Okay...no "zombies".....but there are people who are dying....and then getting up and attacking people. I mean...the title of the friggin' show is ...."FEAR OF THE WALKING DEAD"...not "Fear of Humanity, Difficult Choices and Survival"!

My point being.....there is just too much "living dead", "zombies", "undead" in culture now to get away with a newer show(the time setting being newer) being able to get away with people in the show being oblivious to the idea of it.
        IMO I guess...

In Kirkman's world, there is no knowledge of zombies. There's been no zombie movies or shows. The first encounter with the concept of zombies is when they become a real thing. Kirkman has said that before in regards to why the word zombie does not EVER appear in the books.

Thanks. Never heard that before. Definitely provides a lot of clarity there.

I stand corrected, the Z-word was actually used once in the comics between Rick and Tyrese, but not like they knew what it meant. I didn't remember it.

However, this is a quote from Kirkman,

“We decided very early on that there’s a lot zombie fiction out there, there’s a lot of zombie movies, and that leads to a lot of questions. Why are these characters never going ‘oh yeah, you gotta shoot them in the head, because I saw that on Night of the Living Dead‘,” he said. “And so we decided if we just strip that word out, and have this show set in a dimension where zombie movies just didn’t exist, it would kind of make things a little more believable.”

                Interesting.
But I disagree with Mr. Kirkman.
To me...it makes it's less believable.
I could believe that if the world was set in even the '80's....but it's just too prevalent now to ignore it.
To me it would be like making 24 and Jack always having to find a payphone because cell phones were never invented.(okay...one is real...the other...not so much)
                It's Mr. Kirkman's world though!
But thank you and in the light of this info....it does make sense in terms of this show now.
I can stop yelling at the characters now!

Exactly. Haha. But you have to take into mind, he started the comic series 12 years ago, and it wasn't nearly as popular at all. My guess is he set it up that zombies don't exist back then, and the TV just was to follow.

Though I tend to disagree that it makes it less realistic, because if they know what walkers are right away it takes out the early struggles and learning of zombie protocol. I'm not sure either way is "realistic", as it is about zombies, but it makes the story better having them not know the process.

They shouldn't have waited till first light. Now that the military is there, their world is going to go straight down the toilet.

weird question. Is the main guy character, the dad, supposed to be spanish or like indian/middle eastern? I initially thought indian/middle eastern, but then i see his ex wife is spanish, and his kid is, well...idk. I want to say that actor plays an indian ormiddle eastern character in other stuff I think.

The older spanish guy doesn't seem to like him, and i haven't heard that guy speak spanish, so they don't seem to be the same nationality. idk, it just hit me last nights episode, like what is that guy?

I had similar questions but I finally listened for the last name and it's Manawa which sounds Pacific Island.

I did some research and originally the character's last name was Posada but when they cast the actor they changed it, presumably to match his look.

So considering his new wife? is white, I think he just likes to mix up the gene pool.

Well in real life he's Maori (kiwi) so I think they're sticking with him being Poly in the show.

But he played a heavy duty Mexican gang banger in Training Day. Was also the scumbag uncle in Once were Warriors.
