I still think it’s way better than shelling out for a whole cable package just based off the terms of contracts (month to month versus year(s) with cable). I like being able to cancel when I’m not using a service much and not get hit with fees and service charges. It’s how it should be.

Plus, and I’m sure this ride will end eventually, but being able to share logins with friends and family. I have a service or two, a buddy has one, another has another, and we share login to spread the cost.

The worst part is you can’t just turn on the TV and get to it. We have to stream off phone, laptop, or PS4. So like for my son who is starting to do things like that on his own, it’s a bit more complicated than hit a button and get to watching. That’s just how it is now, though. He’ll learn. Ha
I just got my cable bill cut enough where the ease of use is worth it vs. cutting for exactly what you explain...plus i like getting regional sports (bally sports isn't available anywhere else right now), need my hockey and baseball

      Re: Cord cutting

We stopped using streaming for live TV after March Madness. Just using the outdoor antenna for the basement, and indoor antenna for upstairs. For streaming we have Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and a friend is letting us use his Hulu.

Live sports is all I really needed live TV for. I can get the Vikings on the radio here, and also have a site I use to stream their games. For college football I can go to my in laws and now that my Mom is moving here, her place for Iowa games. I also get all the Cubs games on the radio so I've been listening to that.

We just got fiber internet awhile back too.

Yeah it is actually. People complained about paying for channels they never watched now they have to pay for almost everything they want to watch piece meal. If I want to watch what I had on cable or satellite the cost is nearly what I used to pay. Paying $40 for YTTV is a far cry from $65.

Up until I paused my YTTV I was still paying for a lot of channels I never watched. If I could pay to get get 8-10 very specific channels then I would agree with you but the way things are now you can only handpick what you want to pay for so much. I don't care about the majority of stuff on HBO Max or Discovery+ either but I still pay for it for specific shows so again.. paying for a lot of stuff I don't watch. It's just cheaper and easier this way is all.

I thought about going back to cable and on the front end it looks like a decent deal but I would need about 6-7 screens depending on what we are doing in the house. We don't watch a whole lot of TV but sometimes I need to use the projector or a TV on the back deck. The cost of the boxes, DVR, etc. is not worth the trouble or money when I can simply take my roku and plug it in somewhere different if I need to. I just removed a lot of old coax cable from a terrible DirecTV installation the previous homeowner had. I don't want that many wires running through my crawl space and attic anymore either.

Everyone's situation is different and I don't know why people are so down on streaming because if you still prefer hardwire then you benefit because companies are relaxing on their early termination or cancellation fees. Most of them aren't locking people into contracts anymore unless it's for the promotional rates. I think everyone wins and can just do what they think works best for them. If the price eventually evens itself back out I saved money for several years and it's still more convenient.. no harm no foul. At one point I was paying $35/mo for DirecTV Now and getting over 100 channels. It didn't last forever but I still saved a lot of money for a few years.

You're right...I really wish the cable companies would let you use their app not just on mobile. Cox has a Contour app that you can use on mobile or PC but not Roku or anything. You can watch all your channels and on demand and everything. Obviously it'd cannibalize their box sales, and I'd worry about bandwidth unless it was free for their app, but we have 1 main DVR box and 2 satellites and it's all annoying.

Really enjoying Paramount+, specifically the Nickelodeon collection. Current children’s shows for my boy and then so many throwbacks from my childhood in the 90s I can share with him and revisit on my own. This feels like a must have streamer just based off that if you have any good memories of 90’s Nick.

I’ve gotta say that Disney+ is really hitting its stride too. I think they’ve got their schedule optimized to where when one MCU season is over, a Star Wars show drops, and so on. I’m just not getting that same constant hype train from Netflix and Hulu. I do dig the new movie releases on HBO Max, though. And they knock it out with series a few times a year (Mare of Easttown, Watchmen, etc) to keep around.

I have cable but barely use it. I pretty much stick to all the streaming apps if I wanna watch a show or movie.

                    Re: Cord cutting

Canceled our cable when I got my WiFi-6 router last November. When we extended it 2 years prior, we knew that we would end it next deadline. So the final year, I couldn't wait to end our cable. My fiancée was the only one who watched TV like that and I would only watch sports and I usually streamed my daughter's shows on YouTube. Big difference only doing 1 GB internet each month
Plus I still have access to my old email account that's attached to my parents Xfinity account. So, I can still stream all the games and shows I like from that account. So there was no point of keeping our Cable, if I can stream everything using my old email account

I've had Hulu Live and YTTV. Looking to check out Sling Orange/Blue. Costs a bit less wondering if anyone has had any experience with their service.

So YouTube TV has finally added 4K and 5.1 surround!

                        Oh but there's a catch...it's $9.99/mo for the first 12 months and then it's $19.99/mo after that!!

                        Those ****ers can shove it.

Edit: so 5.1 is apparently rolling out to everyone, it's 4K + more streams + offline viewing that you have to pay extra for. Still highway robbery IMO.

Wait so its a extra 19.99 for 4k over what ever the price already is for YouTube tv? I have been wanting 4k and I am still with Comcast and they do have some 4k but its very very little and I would have to have someone come out and change the box to a 4k one and a while back I thought about doing that has the box is free upgrade but they where out of 4k boxes at the time.

Yep so 4k puts you at like $85 a month so it's basically a cloud-based cable now. We knew this day would come, remember when it was only $35/mo?

Oh wow I tried a trail of YouTube tv like 3 years ago and at the time it was only 40 so that went up fast. Also internet is never cheap. Right now with Comcast I am paying like 203 for tv/internet/phone. Internet by its self would be like 110 or something. So then with YouTube tv I would already be paying like more. I like Comcast over all but would like more 4k options and also Comcast picture is not the best direct tv has a much better picture. But I am in a apartment and dishes dont always work with the side I am on.
