    Re: Cord cutting

I never got the email from Roku; got the one from YTTV today.

I don't even have the option to go back to cable. The cable company only offers internet to new customers in my area now. They're supposedly trying to get out of cable.

Hopefully they reach a deal. If not, guess I'll look at Fubo or ATT. Although I think ATT requires a contract, which is a no-go for me. Or I may just go without live TV for the summer. I can't watch the Braves anyway and I've got stuff on Apple TV I can watch.

I paused my YouTube TV until CFB season starts back so hopefully everything is resolved before then.

I put some money towards subscribing to HBO Max and Discovery+ and it's saving me about $50/month for a bit.

Why not Hulu Live? Only thing it is missing is the MLB Network.

Forgot about it. But it’s in contention if Roku drops YTTV.

It cracks me up how much ESPN charges these carriers to include them when you consider how little of their daily programming contains actual sports being played.

Thinking about adding HBO Max. Does it include a live schedule and can you watch all of the HBO channels like you can with a cable tv package?

If you're getting a standalone subscription then it doesn't include a live TV schedule that I can see. I'm sure HBO shows airing will be available to watch but there's not a guide or anything like that. I remember when I had a subscription to HBO Now during the last season of Game of Thrones you could start watching the newest episode on the same night it aired live.. usually a few minutes early too.

I can't speak for adding it to an existing streaming service though.

Well with all the BS going on with streaming services, cost increases, RSNs not available, etc. he has a point.

That's an option. But after buying three rokus last year, I'd like to avoid buying more hardware.

Roku removed YTTV from its channel store but is letting people keep the app if they already downloaded it, for now anyway. Hopefully they resolve it soon. The setup with Roku/YTTV has been about perfect for me.

I have Roku and Firestick and for some reason the Roku's seem a bit more stable. Obviously Firestick allows for more options.

You can watch basically everything they have on HBO. It's not live tv streaming but it does tell you when new episodes are available. I think it is either same time or next day for streaming.

Plus they have the free movies in the 1st month of release.

To go down the educational trail for me...

Let's look at MLB for an example. Is it MLB restricting viewership and blocking out games to local markets or the TV broadcasting station MLB has the deal with?

Secondly, does the TV broadcasting station get any revenue if I'm an out-of-market viewer watching the broadcast (i.e. GA state viewer watching an AL game of TOR vs. NYY on the YES channel).

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

As far as I know the answer to question 1 is if your local team has a TV deal (which probably every team does by now) you will only be able to watch those game through that channel/service because they have exclusive rights to that particular local market. This is why you can purchase MLB.tv but still have to deal with all local games blacked out. So it's not really the MLB doing it.

No idea on the second question.

Stations get no revenue from you watching MLB.tv. They pay to broadcast games only in the team's territory. They may get a retransmission fee from MLB. They also remove commercials to keep the stations from getting revenue from MLB.tv.

The stations can stream if you are located there. I haven't tried it lately but I know you used to be able to use a VPN and fool Fox Sports to letting you stream the regional fox sports channel as long as the VPN was in the territory.
