    ESPN Cleaning House

I grew up watching sportscenter, baseball tonight, Sunday NFL countdown, etc. It's sad to see what this network has become.

Get rid of ESPNEWS, possibly even ESPN 2 at this point.

Drop down to sportscenter, baseball tonight, their NFL shows, pti, 30 for 30, otl, a show like sorts reporters, where actual journalists aren't afraid to take shots at the sports figures and leagues.

Have one morning talking heads show, but it needs to be a journalistic sports show. No people yelling over each other.

It's not too late for them to turn it around. If they can return to having journalistic integrity; being able to challenge the status quo in sports, they can regain their followers.

Peter Gammons, John Kruk, and Harold Reynolds... That team back then was money in the bank.

They need this generation's Stuart. They don't have one. They need the guy who's just gonna be like screw it, and just go with his own flow. Whether you liked Scott or not, you respected that he was real.

Kanell hurts....he was my favorite talking head personality at the network.

Reading that long list of layoffs, I was mainly thinking "wow, ESPN has become so bloated." Lots of those laid off haven't produced any insightful analysis/articles in years, perhaps decades in some cases. Lots of them I actively avoid clicking on because I know how basic and cliched their work is going to be.

I honestly don't know why they never mention that they spent over 1 BILLION dollars on new "hi tech" studios and sportscenter sets when they saw this coming 2-3 years ago.

Couldn't stand Kanell. Would like to see Golic Jr replace him with Russillo.

The Kanell thing is interesting. The Michigan fanbase absolutely despises him. Other people seem to like him.

                      Re: ESPN Cleaning House

I have nothing to do with Michigan, good or bad, but I have always thought of Kanell as kind of a tool. I don't hate him, but I've always thought his takes were shallow and mostly BS.

I'll be honest, I had sworn off ESPN for many years. But over the last two years, I've actually watched more of their content, and enjoyed it, than I would normally care to admit. And most of what I watched survived the cuts.

And no, I don't watch Stephen A. Smith, who is emblematic of what many people hate about ESPN. But Pardon the Interruption is pretty great. I don't follow the NBA in-depth, but Jalen and Jacoby is also surprisingly good. I listen to Mike and Mike many mornings, depending on what local sports shows are talking about. I think Trey Wingo is alright on NFL Live. Baseball Tonight is fine, although, as discussed above, MLB Network is much, much better. And I've Michael Smith and Jemele Hill since they started with Numbers Never Lie. They keep changing their set, but they still just keep doing their thing. And Sportscenter is just all over the place. Sometimes great, sometimes awful, but I'm okay with that.

I think this has less to do with ESPN in particular versus how people consume sports news today. The internet and social media are how we get almost all of our information today, making the need for TV networks increasingly less important.

ESPN is bloated a heck. They were always going to be the first to crash. But man, if sports ever stops keeping people from cutting the cord, the entire cable industry is going to be rocked. It will change everything, for better or worse.

Yeah, the quality on NFL Network has been trending towards ESPN-lite for awhile.

I used to love their pre/post game shows but I've skipped that since most of the time, they don't talk about **** or it's Deion talking about "MAH BABY!!" or Michael Irvin and his pointless rants. Don't even get me started on that clown Heath Evans.

NBATV's coverage blows ESPN's out the water. Wish there was a way for Turner to get the Finals but Hell will freeze over before that happens.

He's either vanilla or shallow as hell like someone else said or sounds like a brainwashed football player (obvious reason why). Never felt he really brought anything to the show.

Le Batard is the best thing going at ESPN by far, IMO. They need to leave that show alone and just let them do their own thing.

Kanell's concussion truther/"war on football" narrative was ridiculously stupid and reckless. I don't want the guy to be unemployed, but I stopped listening to Russillo after he came on and made it a more generic sports-y show.

That's what makes him great. He doesn't even pretend to know everything about what's talked about. Gives off an unpretentious balance that is needed.

Katz and Stark also hurt but they should find decent landing spots.

I don't know how any of y'all can stomach LeBatard. He's probably my least favorite sports personality ever, even more than SAS. Once in a blue moon I'll turn on his radio show in my car and I can't listen for more than a minute. His voice, his takes, the format of his show.... ugh it is so terrible.
