Been rewatching (or first time watching, in the case of the newer releases) the SW series over the last few weeks... knocked out 8 and Rogue One, did the original trilogy and now going back to the prequels. Just finished Ep1 and... I’m surprised how badly it is crapped on. Some of the acting is bad, but there was a good amount of corny dialogue in the OT. The series as a whole is not nearly as tight as one would think from how popular it is. Which really isn’t a problem, but everyone who is so up in arms over TLJ and RoS seem to forget this whole series, while being a big universe, is a pretty simple story. I guess people wanted 7-9 to be a lot more in depth, complex, better written/told, but it’s kind of followed the same old of the 6 before it.
Probably blasphemy but, I think I like the story of Ep1 better than Ep4, I just think it gets a lot of love because it was the intro to SW and for it’s time was awesome. I was kind of let down going from Rogue One to Ep4... the mystique is more what’s special than the actual substance is my feeling. A lot of the original trilogy feels this way. A ton of nostalgia, special place in the heart and mind, but not sure they hold up that well in the decades it’s been since release (and since my first viewing). Which is probably why my bar for the newer releases is lower than what most probably pegged it at.
I’ll be doing Ep2 and Ep3 in the next week or so, from what I’ve read they’re the low and high points of the prequels (haven’t watched them since release when I was a young teen), but I can confidently say right now my top 3 films are:
Rogue One
ROTJ
Empire
