Re: Game of Thrones: Season 8 (Final season)

This season shows us why it's taking GRRM--a far more talented writer and plotter than D&D--an eternity to finish the books. He has no idea how to wrap things up in a way that makes sense; he's backed into a corner and can't find a way out.

The poor writers for HBO didn't have the luxury to take a decade to try to figure it out. They were given the bullet points on how things end and had to try to make it work and good grief is it ugly. The final scene with Cersei was probably the lowest point in the series. Nothing about it made sense, from any perspective. For years the show did it right--the characters drove the plot, not the other way around--and now it's all gone to hell.

They really needed another season to finish this show. Everything feels too rushed considering how slow things moved the previous seasons.

I'm still enjoying the season although I admit this might be the worst one so far simply because of things being rushed.

Agreed that the last scene made no sense. Didn't love the death of the dragon.

Besides that I enjoyed it. I don't have as big of a problem with the increased pace these last 2 seasons as some. Seems to make sense based on the story and all the different story lines converging.

This season certainly threw the lore out the window. 2 episodes left and I feel like this ending might be Dexter bad.

Danny is just so reckless in her tactics on the battlefield. She is like a noob playing Total War on pc who just highlights all her soldiers and sends them to attack one faction, paying no mind to her surroundings..
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

The characters are only as dumb as they are written. The writers seem to have turned on Dany this season. Shame.

You are right King..Trying to wrap this show up in six episodes is making these writers have to stretch character behavior to serve narratives or putting bows on storylines. Last two weeks of battles had me saying WTF though! lol

Kind of crazy how fast she has fallen. She looked unbeatable midway through last season and now she lost 2 of her dragons, most of her army, her most loyal followers, and now her remaining advisors are on the verge of turning on her.

Some of it makes sense, some seems over the top dumb to keep Cersei a true threat

The crazy thing is the writers wanted this. They wanted shortened seasons. HBO was more than willing to keep going and/or offer more episodes.

I enjoy the story and trying to figure out what's going to happen next. I enjoy seeing Sansa turn into a far more clever Littlefinger. I enjoy seeing Arya turn into a far deadlier Hound. I enjoy knowing that Dany is like every Targaryean before her: mad.

But I don't enjoy how they are getting to these points. I don't enjoy that the show is not GoT anymore. It's very clearly not Martin's design anymore and the creators are out of their element.

I'm convinced that some of the poor military maneuvering is simply because D&D have zero idea how a military should function. They don't know that stuff. They just know their story. Martin wasn't one to just write some crap up without researching it and understanding why you don't have siege weapons in the middle of the battlefield or why two freaking dragons can't track ten ships in the open sea.

What frustrates me most is that the characters aren't smart anymore. They are, as someone said, being driven by the plot instead. We aren't getting a build up of their decisions. We're just being told, "look, a dragon is going to die so this is what we thought. Don't worry about how it makes no sense that the other dragon survived though, or why Dany couldn't see freaking ships in the open sea from miles away."

And LOL at D&D trying to explain it away like, "Dany kind of forget about the Iron Fleet." You mean the same fleet they just discussed in a meeting about their upcoming war? Dany isn't just mad, she's also got dementia, I guess.

It's stupid stuff like that that is killing the greatness of the series. It feels like D&D are done. They are tired. They don't want anything to do with Game of Thrones anymore. I wish HBO just told them to f-off and found someone else to take over.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Game of Thrones: Season 8 (Final season)

I think DnD, once off the book material, decided to start spotlighting the actors and cool visuals just for visuals sake (a very Hollywood mindset), rather than spotlighting the plot, which is a writers mindset.

None of the military strategy this season makes much sense, but they give us some awesome visuals. Dothraki horsemen charging into an unseen force with flaming swords, extinguishing slowly, bringing dread to the audience? Pretty sweet screenplay material. Doesn’t make a lick of sense, but it looks sweet and gets the audience in the right tone going forward.

In the preview for episode 5, the golden company is awaiting the opponents, lining up outside of the walls....why? Wouldn’t it make more sense to man the walls and pelt Jon’s advance with missiles? But it is a cool Hollywood visual.

Cersei not murdering Dany, her dragon and her 20 troops during the parlay at the end of episode 4? All contrived plot to show off the amazing face acting of Emilia Clarke, Greyworm, and Lena Heady, also Peter Dinklage. It’s all very Hollywood.

But at the end of the day, I don’t blame DnD or HBO for defaulting to a very formulaic Hollywood version of writing. They didn’t originate the material. They can’t think like George, but they can think like Prototype Hollywood producers. And that’s what we got. For better or worse George has taken his time writing his books. And here we stand.

I hear the next two episodes are a doozy and may cause riots online. I can’t wait to watch!

One thing that has absolutely been perfect this season is the music. Man if that doesn't get you hyped then I don't think anything will.
