Re: 007 is now a woman

I'm not talking about anyone in particular in this thread, but "outrage" over news like this is funny to me. In every form of art, putting new spins on things is just something that will eventually happen over time.

I can understand serious Bond fans not necessarily being happy with whatever this is supposed to be, but they've had over 50 years of James Bond running wild in these movies. I think that's more than enough time to allow for a change from the norm, if only for one movie.

Plus, it seems like he's still going to be around anyway. It's hard for me to see them being done with the character forever. This movie might be great, or it might be terrible, but fans can always dig up one of the 20+ James Bond films to hold them over if this one doesn't do it for them. They'll be alright.

This is definitely a pc move. But I'm down. As long as it's good. There are plenty of awesome female characters in movies. Just do it right.

Just make it believable I'm still pissed about the Last Jedi which was just ruined because of the pc garbage. But they also just picked the worst characters.

Just please be good. Hopefully Miss Bond can't magically fly through space.

This is pretty much how I feel too. We have so many Bond films and some are terrible so why not try something new and it might stick.

It’s like people think this move ruins Bond movies forever. If it sucks it sucks, move on to the next one.

I don't understand complaining about PC culture, inclusiveness, and people being "offended by everything" when the same people get legitimately upset about the casting and plot of A MOVIE.

Who's really the perpetually offended? I’m not even talking about OS specifically. It’s everywhere.

I just don't like when story is sacrificed for some "greater cause," and it's happened before.

Like, if their greatest motivation for what they're doing is to appease the PC crowd, they're doing filmmaking wrong.

That's a larger discussion. Generally complaints about PC and those who embrace that culture is about free speech, or more so the desire to define and control that, which is the irony. So, AUChase, if you ever said anything around here or anywhere where someone could have construed what you said to be offensive, whether you meant it to be or not, then you could be deemed as being insensitive, bigoted, racist, etc. So, in the effort to be "inclusive", it actually ends up being excluding in the respects to free speech. The PC crowd would embrace 007 as a woman because for many this would then somehow equate her with him, and more globally equate men and women in their eyes, when most of us are grown up and have enough sense to understand and hold the value that men and women can be different AND equal. Those opposed would state that this is forcing the value to others and does not equate it at all. You can't force anyone to view equality. Either you view it that way or you don't.

So your statement of those "complaining about PC" and "being offended by everything are on opposite sides of the fence in this arena.

They are not. Not at all. Judging solely on the reactions to this casting and the Little Mermaid casting they are definitely on the same side of the fence. Heck, some posters in this very thread are on the same side of the fence.

The Bond franchise is hardly some paragon of storytelling. After 24 of these movies, if they can pull off something so bad that the only thing we can blame it on is their attempt to please the PC crowd, that would be *knocks fan into bathtub*, shocking, positively shocking. There's going to be 15 things to complain about before that.

Being offended by this or some occasional PC motivated things does not equate to "being offended by everything". It's a singular reaction to pop culture taking marching orders from a PC viewpoint instead of actually just seeking to make the best media they can.

And I think there are also degrees of being "offended" as well that is being lost here in the discussion. I know of a few people, including myself, who don't really approve of some of these obviously politically correct motivated casting decisions but I really don't know of anyone who is "outraged" by it.

People like myself may complain online but you aren't going to see anyone outside with picket signs acting a fool in front of the theater on opening night either

Nah, that ain't going to happen. What will happen is we just won't pay any money for that sort of thing. Then Hollywood will just see less money is all.

Huge difference between people being "outraged over everything" and people simply making their displeasure known on a particular issue.

P.S. a lot of blowback from movies like The Little Mermaid also has a lot to do with Hollywood, in general, doing so many darned remakes. People are getting remake fatigue at this point.

Now if the Bond girl is badass and the acting is on point, then cool. I'm watching it.

I could care less about politics. I just want to see a good movie and for the characters to feel right.

I don't know if you were putting me with that crowd that is so upset about the little mermaid. But I'm not at all. I think people being upset about that are petty as hell.

But I'm not interested in any Disney remakes tbh. But I hope it knocks it out of the park.

I'm sorry, but when a lot of female and minority castings in recent years have been met with "Oh golly, another PC role!" I'm going to beg to differ with you.

There is not some Politically Correct Team operating behind the scenes to ruin your favorite characters and IPs. Its not some big conspiracy. What is the conspiracy is keeping the status quo simply because it's the status quo. Any deviation from that is not the PC Team coming for you and to force equality on you. To think that and continuously think that is absurd and to feel somehow victimized or any "level" of outrage is petty and dumb.

If people don't want females or minorities to be better and more equally represented that's fine. Just come out and say it rather than hiding behind the "oh, that's so PC" bull****.

This is such bull****. The blowback was singularly about the casting. Nothing else. If people are truly getting remake fatigue then that's not being translated to the box office where Disney is pulling in big money on the majority of these. Like I said, bull****.

I consider Star Wars to be fairly progressive considering their collection of minor characters (the main cast isn't so diverse) so that is why that reasoning seems absurd to me. I'm also one of the fans of The Last Jedi and everything they did within the film (to varying degrees). I enjoyed Rose. Rey is an interesting character. The Vice Admiral was amazing. The only female character that sucked was Captain Phasma and I'm pretty sure she was the new Boba Fett stand in.

I have my issues with the new Star Wars, but its cast is certainly not it.

Seemingly we all do, but here we are attempting to discuss the events of a movie that isn't even in production yet based solely on the casting of a black woman in the role of the new 007 agent. Somebody has other things going on rather than just worried about seeing a good movie.
