I rewatched all of these a few months back.
All of them have something going for them except for The Ghost Dimension. 1 is just a good intro getting the feet wet, 2 sets up the mystique of different camera angles plus innocents you wouldn't want to be haunted (children and dogs) while connecting to 1, 3 is a blast to the past and has some of the better haunting elements, 4 probably has the most likeable protagonists, and The Marked Ones is easily the most entertaining and finds a way to separate its plot structure from the rest.
But I rewatched The Ghost Dimension, and man that one is a wreck. Wrong choice after wrong choice was made for this movie, probably starting with making it in 3D. I think the decisions made in the end were probably the right ones, but the execution was absolutely dreadful and is a sour continuation of what could have been done after the end of The Marked Ones.
I don't know what "an unexpected retooling" is of this, but I hope that it retains the good parts of 1-3 the most regarding build-up, if not evolving into something else completely different. Maybe they'll do what those shows do today having ghost/demon hunters, who knows? Either way, I'm excited.
