So, is anybody going to go through the whole game without harvesting a Little Sister?

What separates BioShock from other FPS games (emergent open-ended gameplay, AI ecology, and narrative) doesn't really come through in the demo.

I'm not sure I want to buy a game that will get my $60 and only that. With the other games like Halo 3 and GTA and Mass Effect, I might get 100 hours out of it.

Bioshock, while great, seems to be a play through a few times on the various difficulties and then ditch.
I'm different. I think a game that will last you 20-30 hours a single playthrough, possibly even more, is well worth the $60, even if that game doesn't have tons of replay value. I do fully expect myself to play through the game multiple times, just I like I did with System Shock 2.

Apparently some Toys R Us stores have broken the street date. Heres some pics I found from another website. Maybe someone could get lucky.....

Edit: one of the pics may or may not show up for some reason.

Heres a link if you dont see one of them:

What does emergent open-ended gameplay suggest as well as AI ecology. I've never heard those two phrases.

I agree, great graphics and atmosphere but not my type of game.I might end up getting it later on for a reduced price. With Stranglehold and Two Worlds coming out later this month Bioshock will have to take a back seat.

I'm torn between this game and Stranglehold.

I'm starting college next week, and I know my time for games will be limited. I think Bioshock would give me more bang for my buck, and it looks far more deep. But, after playing the Stranglehold demo, I must say that that game is very, very fun.

I do like how on the screen when you exit the Bioshock demo, it says that no two encounters will be the same. And that no two players will play the same. That alone makes the game sound extremely deep and unpredictable.

With emergent open-ended gameplay Irrational is essentially taking what they did in System Shock 2 to another level.

AI ecology is the name of a new NPC AI system that Irrational came up with. The AI's have deep relationships with the world, one another, and you. You can observe these relationships, and then engage and take advantage them. It's interesting that Irrational got this idea from watching Animal Planet.

Here's some comments from Ken Levine that I think will help explain this stuff further.

You've described the game as having emergent gameplay. Do you have any good examples of that? It's kind of an ephemeral concept; does it throw a toy box at you or...

Ken Levine: To us what it means to have emerging gameplay is that you have a lot of expression as a player and the world is listening to you and that expression... [When starting BioShock] we had just finished this game called SWAT 4. We had done almost everything you could do with AI. These AI work together, they flank, they flee, they take cover they do all that stuff, and when you're doing great AI that is what people tend to think of -- doing all those traditional combat oriented tasks.

We really wanted to rethink what it meant to have an AI in a video game and what we started with is that AIs have really interesting relationships with you and each other. I don't know if you saw the game at E3 or anything... but you see the relationship between the big daddies and the little sisters who have this sort of codependent relationship on each other where one protects the other... they have all these interesting relationships with each other and with you. You have the ability with all the powers you have in this game to manipulate these relationships and interact with those relationships.

I think to make all that work you have to make an AI ecology where all these interactions are based on where the player has the ability to input on and effect. It's a huge amount of work but that's what really makes a world feel open ended and emergent, that AIs have their own goals and own agendas and you're able to interact with them.

                ...

Um, in terms of the AI, what kind of things can we expect to see that shows off the AI ecology. Like the interactions between the characters and NPC's, enemies and NPC's, enemies together?

Ken Levine: There's essentially three classes of AI's, there's the Splicers, sort of the standard monsters, the mutants of the world who have mutated themselves just like you, and you can fight them, you can take over security systems and those systems will fight them, you can control some of them and have them fight each other. Then I think, one of the key innovations in this game...you've seen the big guy in the diving suit and the little girl... that’s the "Big Daddy" and "Little Sister"... and they're a pair, and they just emerge in the world - he comes up to a vent and knocks on it, she comes out and scampers down his head and shoulders to the ground, and she says "Come on! Come on!". She walks around the world looking for bodies to harvest the genetic material from, she recycles the genetic material herself, and he protects her, he's like almost a father figure to her, a big silent creature in a diving suit. And if you threaten her, watch out for Big Daddy, but if you leave them alone, they leave you alone. However, you have powers in the game that can trick them and manipulate them making...him think you're a little sister and he'll follow you around and protect you and leave his charge alone, or make her think you're a big daddy and she'll be like to you "Come on! Come on!". And they have this whole relationship where...if Big Daddy gets killed she kneels down and cries in front of him, and when she tries to get back into her little hole at the end, he's gone, she's leaping up and trying to catch on to the bars and pull herself up. And that relationship...build a relationship between the AI's not just between you and the AI's, that isn't just about "boom boom boom", a relationship between them in this horrible world. This is the closest thing to love in this world between these two characters, a father/daughter relationship. And you impact upon their relationship, and that’s my thing that I'm most excited about this game.

                ...

"We started looking at A.I. that had relationships," he says, referring to the system at the technical core of BioShock, "A.I. that had a web of motivations, which would result in behavior that would be very understandable to the player, A.I. capable of evoking complex emotional responses." If multiplayer games are chat-a-rific at the expense of thematic complexity, thematically rich (by comparison) single-player games often fail to meet players' demands for socially insightful spontaneity. Levine's thoughts precisely. "We really want the player to make moral decisions that aren't habitual," he says, referring to rooms full of scripted bad guys with artificially poignant ethical "choices"--like the option to off friendlies or to blitz bystanders via jacked cars, and its purely one-dimensional consequences. "We want the choices players make to [have an] impact in more than just some superficial or statistical way. Usually, the advantages of doing evil are a lot clearer than the advantages of doing good, and we wanted to thread that tension through BioShock by creating a multiform A.I. ecology that exists and acts persistently, completely independent of the player."

Big talk, yes, but if you've read the hands-on impressions up to this point and the early reviews from PC gaming magazines -- It's no longer just talk, Irrational has delivered on their word.

I am curious, where have you seen atmosphere like Bioshock? I really have to think to come up with any games that have the artistic touches and atmosphere of this game. I know it's not your cup of tea, but when you pass it off as "meh" with the atmosphere, I wonder if you can really defend that position.

The atmosphere in Bioshock is first rate. There are not too many games i've seen that ooze with the quality of this game. It might not be his cup of tea and that's cool, it didn't pull his trigger but he never gave us a game that he felt compares to Bioshock.

The only games I can think of that sort of compare might be R:FOM and COD2 which had a storyline but IMO are not in the same league with Bioshock.

The closest I can come is Oblivion and even the beauty that game has can't come close to the atmosphere in Bioshock. There have been some games with fantastic environments, HL 2 springs to mind, but this one is something special.

It's kind of like saying you don't like Hitchcock and deny his greatness as a director.

I still think the Half-Life series has the best atmosphere of any game. Do you guys know how long the single player is supposed to be? I probably will buy this one.

                              Bioshock released early confirmed?

It appears that BioShock has changed it’s release date to today. There has no been any official conformation from Microsoft or Take Two and neither of their PR agencies are available for contact. However, many things are proving that this is true.
                              1. Toys R’ Us in the United States has been selling copies today
                              2. The commercial now says “Available Now” and this has changed from when I saw the commercial 2 hours ago (below)
                              3. The game is driving the hype train after the demo and it would be smart to release today
                              4. Ken from 2K has confirmed it according to unofficial NeoGaf sources // it matches with the commercials I’ve seen

I am personally trying to contact every gaming related person that would have knowledge on what’s exactly happening. But chances are we will get a press release later tonight or early Wednesday morning.

In Canada, these commercials can be easily spotted from the earlier ones because they also advertise the 360 price cut after the commercial. [I’ll try to tape it next time around]

Update: I have just gotten somewhat official information that the game will be sold through every store as of now that already has stock of the game and they will be shipping the game rapidly to all stores. They have advised that there will be alot of confusion among retailers and that due to these issues, you may not be able to get your copy until things have been cleared up.

I checked Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, Best Buy Canada, FutureShop and Walmart online stores and all dates are still indicating 08/21/07. I would guess this will be mixed by the morning. I can confirm for a fact that the “Available Now” commercials are real since I have seen them with my own eyes.

More Information as I get it!

Update 2: I’ve been calling/emailing around for the last while and there is no new information that we can get on this. We do know for a fact that the commercial is real, however we will have to wait awhile to get all the information.

Also if you are able to call around stores in your area and get some info, please post a comment on what you’ve heard. I have no stores in the area that operate 24hours unfortunately.

Update 3: Thanks to “Anon” we now have the BioShock - Available Now video from YouTube. I need to get abit of sleep now, and if they don’t clear up everything. I’ll try calling Take Two/2K and Edelmen to see if they have anything to share.
