Which isn't saying much, given the camera in the Dreamcast games made them almost unplayable. And any level that didn't star Sonic or Shadow (in SA2) in those games was damn boring.

"Also unexpected was a feature in "Genji" to install the game, committing 4GB of data from the game's Blu-Ray disc to the PS3's hard drive — a three-minute one-time-only procedure available from the game's start menu that a Sony rep said cuts down in-game load times from about 15 seconds to four seconds. That's something Sony can offer, given that both versions of its console include a hard drive — 20GB and 60GB, respectively. "Genji" also happens to be done. The game is ready to be manufactured, one of the PS3's first finished works."

BC on PS3 not to enhance PS2 or PS1 games like originally thought.

Phil Harrison Talks Downloadable PS1 Games on PS3
New details on how backwards compatible games will work.

Following today's PS3 press conference in which Sony demonstrated its online PlayStation Store, 1UP was able to speak with Sony's Phil Harrison regarding the PS1 and PS2 titles that will be available for download (though don't expect to see downloadable PS2 games for a while).
According to Harrison, unlike how the PS2 would enhance PS1 games with texture smoothing and what not, the PS3 will offer no such visual enhancements (including resolution enhancements) for the previous generation titles. "They are as exactly as they were," said Harrison, who claims Sony preferred to rather deliver them in their original state.

Sony's intention is to eventually have its entire back catalogue of PS1 games available for download through the online PlayStation Store, barring any titles that can't be released because of legal issues (such as licenses for talent or music tracks having expired). "Unfortunately, when these games were originally developed, licenses weren't negotiated with this sort of future distribution in mind," said Harrison. He mentioned particularly looking forward to being able to offer people games that are essentially impossible to find, such as Motor Toon Grand Prix or Vib Ribbon. At the launch of the PS3, titles such as the original Syphon Filter and Twisted Metal will be available.

Harrison also explained how the PS1 downloads will initially be for play only on the PSP, but will later work on the PS3 when the emulation software is available. The beauty is that one download will be playable on both PlayStation machines, console and portable. According to Harrison, we can expect the games to be playable on PS3 by year's end. Of course, actual PS1 and PS2 games (not downloaded) will play on the PS3 right from the start.

As mentioned in the press conference, a piece of content such as a PS1 game can be downloaded on up to five PS3s, meaning that when you log into your profile on someone else's PS3 you have the rights to download it there as well.

I could care less about BC. I have never used it on any system I have owned. Really glad MLB is coming to pS3 this spring. I'm hoping I can get a ps3 around or right after Xmas.

Gamespot did a 2 hour show featuring exclusively PS3 gameplay of many games last week on the 10/19 On the Spot show.

P.S.- The PS3 gui walkthrough is at about the 42:40 mark.

eBay manages PS3 preorder auctions with an iron fist

ebayWe know that it's a business decision that will save ebay many headaches come November 17, but we'd also like to think that this Internet giant is looking out for the little guy. Today, ebay issued a new auction restriction that officially limits the sale of PS3s (and some other toy that we've never heard of) prior to the system's launch:

Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii Pre-Sales. These highly-anticipated video game consoles will be in extremely short supply during their initial launch. During the launch of the similarly-released Microsoft Xbox 360, we saw a high number of well-intentioned sellers unable to meet their pre-sale obligations to buyers due to restricted supply, as well as an increase in fraudulent listings for these items. To prevent similar problems with these latest releases, the following restrictions have been placed on pre-sales for the PS3 and the Wii:

                        * Only one of each console can be listed per eBay account prior to the launch of the console (PS3 is expected to be available on 11/17/06, Wii on 11/19/06).
                        * The seller must only accept payment through PayPal, and have at least 50 feedback with a 98% or greater positive rating so that they qualify for PayPal Buyer Protection.
                        * The pre-sale item must be listed in the 3, 5, 7 or 10-day formats, and cannot use Buy It Now.
                        * The listing must include a photo of your pre-order receipt in the description.

Hats off to ebay for helping to minimize disappointment while allowing capitalism to do its thing by not completely halting all PS3 sales. Not every company would face this challenge and still support free trade.

More good stuff on PS3. Ryan Bolling(sp?) of Sony was on the On the Spot Gamespot live show this past week 10/26 fielding questions and more PS3 hands on.

They asked him questions about PS1 and PS2 game support, gamertag questions, expanding the hard disk storage space, per game online support and other questions that were not answered as clearly as they should be at this point.

My impression of this guy's knowledge and presentment of the PS3 and its features left me feeling like Sony just isn't functioning as a unit and just threw a bunch of stuff together to get a console out the door. Very unimpressed with the answers to some very good questions sent his way.

The Sony part starts at about the 3:37 mark. Enjoy.

Is there going to be individually assigned Gamertags for people online? I doubt Sony could ever be half as competent (sp) as MS when it comes to its online community and setup, MS nailed that one right there.
