You guys are ********. No wonder non of you work in advertising or marketing.

The name is great in so many ways...

      Wii.

      1) Homophone of "we". Conjures up images of playing with friends, playing in groups. Is a marketers wet dream. Wii do this. Wii do that. Wii play. Wii shoot. Wii score. The advertising agency landing the nintendo account should have an absolute field day. I'm reminded of the old Dodge Neon "Hi" campaign. So clever and simple in its concept, yet so effective. Possible slogans? "Touch Your Wii" "Lets Wii" "Can wii play just a wii bit longer?" "Smokin' wii", "Wii!!!!!!!!!!", "WWWiD?"

In fact "WWWiD" would be the greatest ad campaign ever.

      2) Short name that can be pronounced in any language. I'd hate to hear chinese people butcher the name "revolution." In fact, the name "revolution" isn't even a positive image in every country. And do Spaniards call it the "revolucion?" Wii is wii in any language. It's pronounced in every language, because as far as I know, almost every language in the world has a phonetic sound exactly like or similar to "wee" Wii also means "yes" in french.

      3) It is abbreviated "Wii". This is better than shortnening the revolution name to "rev".

      4) Marketing of other accessories. Like Apple and their ipod, which looks similar to the Wii, 3rd party manufacturers can easily market accessories that are unmistakeably directed for the Wii. Such as a dance pad called "Wii-dance", or a Wifi adapter called the "Wii-fi". How about an accessory called a "Wii-zer" or "Wii-blow" I see a definite Apple influence in nintendo's future marketing and design plans.

      5) The "ii" in the Wii name looks like the controllers. This is genius.

      6) If successful, opens up the possibility of the simple, but great name Wii2 (WiiTwo), Wii3 etc for future product.

Thing is, there were millions of gamers who didn't even know Nintendo were making a new console.

        Now they do.

Plus, everyone else is talking about it in one way or another. Pure genius marketing.

E3 will top it all off. I cannot wait to see some games!!

IMO and I gave this some thought. The reason why Nintendo changed the name to something silly/dumb/makes little sense, was for the attention. It's no different than watching that stupid commercial on TV that makes little sense and it stays in your mind as you try and figure it out.

Then like a dumb a$$ you go and ask your buds if they saw the commercial and what they thought of it.

Too quote from Animal Crossing a Nintendo game, that last thing you do as Tom Nooks employee is write a message for the animals on the Bulletin Board. And he tells you to write something "that will create a buzz around the water cooler".

If that's what Nintendo was after, they suceeded 110%. The question is will this help sell their systems....don't know.

Nice to know you can make that assessment without knowing anyone here. I may be a ****** (according to you) but at least I can spell the word "none."

You're "I just took a class on marketing so now I know more than you" approach to looking at their name may make sense to you, but did you simply just stop and think about how the name sounds like a synonym for urine? Or the male genitalia? Or just how to most English speaking Americans it sounds silly and "kiddy," which is exactly what has plagued Nintendo for years now.

The Revolution, in my opinion, was the perfect name because it told the consumer that they were getting something different. It seperated itself from the competition by being unique rather than throwing more polygons at the player. Wii, supposedly tells the consumer that Nintendo is including them into their gaming experience. That may sound all fine and dandy in theory, but does anyone honestly think people are going to walk into the store and see the Wii and say to themselves, "Hey, it is made for me because I am part of 'we'!" I'm not going to say this is as bad as the Chevy Nova in spanish speaking countries, but to the American ear it sounds pretty stupid.

I don't think Nintendo changed the name to Wii strictly for attention or to create a buzz (though I am sure they knew it would do that as well). I honestly think they believe in this name as something that will make everyone feel included in their product.

                  I found out...

Wee (Wii) is a polite way to say piss in the UK. It's synonymous with urine there.

                  That's just bad Nintendo.

I for one dislike the name, but guess what? This thread has been dead for weeks and now that "Wii" was announced, the thread activity has increased. I have seen a lot of activity on other message boards regaqrding this as well. Nintendo certainly has generated a buzz with this. Just what they wanted

Has anyone seen the new poll over at gamefaqs.com?

The question is 'what do you think of the name of Nintendo's new console?'

And after 48,000 votes, almost 60% of`em are unfavorable.

                            Link....

You can vote on the gamefaqs homepage if you want to.

I may buy the system if they have enough quality RPG's, and come to appriciate the bizarro world controller, but I think Wii is the worst name in the history of names. In fact I'm going to be like Clarence the barber from Coming to America: I don't give a bleep what they change the name to. Its always going be the Revolution to me. W-i-i spells Revolution.
