    Re: Battlestations Midway

Ok got a game in, after being called about 3 names for not knowing what I'm doing, I just turned off my mic. I still have no idea what I was doing, but don't care. Clunky controls, below average graphics, and just not a fun game to me.

I'll try it again later tonight, and if it's not any better, just delete it.

I was booted from a group earlier. That's expected.

I'm having fun with it. After reviewing the walkthrough (which is actually larger than the demo), you can really get a sense of what to do with the controls. For instance, I didn't know you could zoom in on an enemy by pressing Y. That helps a lot.

As far as the graphics go, I think they're fine. The one thing I would have liked to have seen done better is the explosions looking more like they are actually a part of what is exploding. Other than that, they're fine.

This demo should not have been a multiplayer demo. With all there is to learn, it's just too much to ask to think you'll be able to jump in.

The Y I figured out, but when you're the battle ship, I don't think it zooms at all, just puts binoculars over the screen.

I'm going to give it another shot later, but after my one game, I was so disappointed in it.

              Re: Battlestations Midway

After I spend a second hour playing it was pretty cool. Airplanes rule. You can set waypoints etc and plan longer attack runs. Dog fighting is pretty cool too.

I didn't have any lockups. Got in 3 games. Nobody really talked though. I seriously don't see needing a 90 minute tutorial for this one. It's really not hard.

This game probably won't do well. Twitch gamers will hate it. It relies more heavily on strategy and the ability to multi-task and work as a team.

I still don't know if I'll buy it, but I seem to be having a better time than most people.

Graphics as mentioned are lacking. But once you know what you're doing the gameplay is pretty fun. I would like to play with some people who know what they're doing to see the strategy take over instead of just trying to figure out the controls. Lotta time before launch to make a determination if it's worth getting.

I'll have to give this a shot tonight but I knew from when they first announced it, releasing a SP demo first would of been a much better idea IMO.

After pressing Y, move your left thumb stick to zoom in and out.

This isn't my kind of game.

On my 2nd game, my system locked up.

Some of the people online take games too seriously. One host was dropping F bombs all over the place because several players didn't know how to confirm they were ready.

                      Yep, experienced the same thing.

My 3rd game tonight, it all started to come together, I played with some very helpful people, and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I don't see this being an OS online game at all, but it could make a fun rental.

                          Re: Battlestations Midway

I agree with Jistic. By the second game I was pretty comfortable with the controls and I destroyed this guy 1 on 1 (I don't think he could figure it out heh heh). Once you learn how to manage the overall battle from the map screen, and jump in and out of situations this game is pretty fun. Left and right on the D-pad switches from squad to sqad and to your shipyards and airports. Controlling one ship at a time is pretty boring before you reach the fight, but once you get enough units up and running to require multi-tasking, the game's pace picks up nicely.

Grafx are meh at best, and the collision detection and explosions are underwhelming. Every time one of my planes was shot down, I would crash it into the ship kamikaze style, but there would be no wreckage or anything. The ships do look cool when they take on major damage, though, and the island and water effects are OK, IMO.

The subs and bombing runs are nice, and the ship-to-ship fights were cool too once you get the hang of manurevering quickly, setting attack orders, and hot-swapping to the next ship. I cant wait to play big battles where I can control just my sub fleet and stalk the surface ships.

Overall, I like it. A non-twitch game is just what I need right now.

                              Re: Battlestations Midway

I tried the demo with five friends last night. After about the third round we started to get the hang of it. You can check the controls during the game - hitting the start button takes you to a menu screen. I still haven't figured out how to assign missions to different groups of planes.

I thought the graphics were good enough. Better than xbox, but not as good as a 360 game should be.

It's hard to judge the gameplay since we were fumbling around the first couple of games. You can just focus entirely on planning and ordering your ships and planes around and let the AI take care of the fighting. Or if you want more action you can spend more time flying planes into battle. The flying is arcade style. I can't comment much on flying the planes since I'm so bad at it. Maybe with some practice? It should be fun to torpedo or dive bomb a ship, but I didn't get that far. I did better controlling the ships. I managed to sink a few carriers with a battleship in the last round.
A couple of little things bothered me. Like how the planes come through the carrier deck (the plane elevator extended out on the side of these ships). And then planes look out of scale (way too big) compared to the carrier. Since you don't actually get to do the take off, why not get the cut scene right? They put you in the Solomon Islands, but the battle isn't set up like the real one. I guess they have to balance it out for multiplayer.

The demo is a big, there is a lot to do and it may actually be enough of this game for me. I don't really see how other maps will make much difference. Otherwise when the price drops to $20 or so then maybe I'd like to take a look at the singleplayer.

Many ww2 carriers had elevators in the middle of the flight deck, both fore and aft.
