Re: Harmonix's Rock Band now with Impressions

This game is pretty fun, but I cant help but be careful with the guitar after hearing about everyone elses breaking.

The thing feels very cheap, though I do like the layout better than the GH guitars. The fret buttons seem to be closer, so its easier to hit the orange notes. In fact, I found myself sliding to far at first to hit the orange, lol.

The drums are fun as hell, but I'd still rather play guitar. I'll get to the solo drum career later.

The singing is rough, for me anyway. I shredded my voice after a two hour playing session earlier, so i'm definetly gonna have to learn to sing if I plan on doing that anymore, lol.

The song list is lacking compared to GHIII, but its still fun. The presentation blows GH away though. There are countless times I catch myself watching the character instead of playing.

It would be nice if we could hear samples of the DLC songs on live, but whatever.

Overall, a good game, until one of my instruments crashes. The replay value rests in the DLC in my eyes. A lower price point would definetly increase replayability, but for now, i'll have to be very selective with my DLC purchases.

I got Rock Band for Christmas too. The guitar is nicely laid out, too bad it's cheaply made. Mine started double strumming after 6 hours of play, I've already filled out the order online for a replacement. It still works fine if I up-strum, so that'll get me by for a while. The drums are a lot of fun, but my uncoordinated self can't really do better than medium, and I've failed on some medium songs. The pedal gives me problems, they are fun to play though.

I really like the songs, it's like having another version of Guitar Hero when I'm in the solo tour. I think I've already spent like $30 on DLC.

What kind of problems are the pedals giving you?

For me... it was the fact that I kept lifting my whole foot after stepping on it, and that caused my foot to ache after about 25 seconds lol I learned to just ease off it but still keep pressure on it and that kept the pain down a lot lol

This may have been asked/answered in this thread but I'll give it a whirl anyways.

I'm wanting to get either GH3 or Rock Band with my Christmas money and both sound really appealing (especially drums). If you had a chance at one or the other, which would you choose and why?

I already know I love GH3 since I play at my friends house so I know I can't go wrong there. What might persuade me to take one over the other though.

Thanks for your help. Merry Christmas!

I would get RB I haven't played guitar hero but RB has more instruments and is really fun.

I have owned all 4 GH installments as well as RB.
What intrigues me about RB is its almost "role-playing-like" quality. In the Multiplayer World Tour mode, you actually have to make good decisions as well as play successfully in order to advance through the game. You really get to see your band grow from a small club-act to a group touring local establishments to eventually travelling across the country and the world. All the while you hire publicists, managers, get record deals, etc.

Unfortunately, this mode can only be experienced with two or more players. Since I do not have the opportunity to play with friends as often as I'd like, I have been getting better at playing one insrument or the other (guitar, bass or drums) and handling the vocals simultaneously. (I highly recommend purchasing a boom mic with a rubber mic clip). If you must play alone and want to experience WT, and have some Guitar Hero experience (I am an average-skilled player) -- it is not as hard to sing and play as one might think.

If you have the luxury of having friends around often, then I don't know if there is many other multi-player games that are MORE fun. The other night I had 12 co-workers and spouses/sig others over for a RB/Christmas party and it was one of the funnest evenings I have ever had with a group of friends as we spent hourts over the course of the evening and early morning hours watching our "band" develop by constantly playing and rotating around the instrument duties.

Good impression man, thanks for the response.

I've got a couple of buddies I'd play with cause we normally have a get together on Friday nights. Also, I'd be almost tempted to play with my dad and stepmom if they wanted to.

Seems like a pretty cool thing, but I know most of the time I'd probably end up playing alone. That's the thing about GH that I like is that I don't need anyone else.

Total (with mic clip, etc) would RB cost me as opposed to GH3?

eli...If you have ever "air drummed" before... you'll LOVE rock band. plain and simple.

The drum set alone makes this a must buy. I know that the instruments are cheaply made, but at least EA is actually replacing them for free, instead of charging for S&H... Plus they have an option of sending out a replacement part, before you send in yours. They have 2 day shipping, so the most you'll be out would be 2 days.

Also, if you have alot of friends/relatives that play video games, you guys will have a blast with this game. Put it this way, every post about somebody getting the game has at least said they've played it for 2+ hours as soon as they got it.. that must tell you something.

With the game cost at $150
                      plus mic stand (24.99) + clip (6.99) I ordered both from musiciansfriend.com
you're looking at a little over $180 altogether.

(Your house will look like a recording studio afterward though.......pretty cool.)

The only drawback for RB is the cost. However, if you do have friends over, there is no better time than rocking out with three or four players.

Either way, you cant go wrong.

I agree with the previous posters. I've only dreamt of playing the drums before this morning, and I've been playing Rock Band with my family now for hours and hours. I can't wait to take this thing back to my place and rock out with my buddies.

Man, it sounds like I'm about to blow a quick $180.

Shug, I'm constantly air drumming as I have 5 or 6 drum sticks I've gotten from concerts. I would love to learn how to really drum.

Sounds like this game is a great way to atleast act like I'm drumming, LOL.

Playing the Drums on RB you at least will learn the coordination it takes to use your foot, and both hands. Almost every song if you play on the hard or expert settings will have you playing the exact kick and snare, and high hat parts.
