After playing the hell out of Rock Band this past week, my wife decides that she wants to play some Guitar Hero III career co-op. Now she hasn't played GH since GH1 due to frustration with hitting notes. I was playing guitar and she was playing bass, she is finally getting good at hitting the notes. This is kind of cool that she is playing this game too now. LOL! Rock Band inspired her to re-try the guitar hero games.
First, this was an absolute pain in the ***.

    Here is my setup:

    PS3 with all updated firmware
    Radioshack adaptor
    GH 2 (red) guitar
    GH 1 and GH 80's

I only play GH on Medium (mainly) and a little hard, so the converter works perfectly for what I am trying to do (especially since I was able to unload my slim on craigslist for $100 and I alleviated entertainment space....that is priceless).

Hammer ons and pull offs don't work and the whammy bar does not work. Everything else works perfectly. So if you only do medium and some hard (though the lack of hammer ons and pull offs would be an issue), then I would highly suggest getting the radioshack adapter.

When I moved up to medium, I struggled a bit at first (adding the extra note was a bit of an adjustment) but eventually it clicked and I can get 95% or better most of the time, unless I just totally screw up a song.

Now that I've moved to Hard, it's coming a bit more slowly. The orange note is an even bigger adjustment, because it requires more hand dexterity, and it requires moving my hands to different fret buttons at different points of the songs. Additionally, Hard also adds TONS more chords and more notes in general, and lots of hammer/pull. It's a much bigger step up from medium to hard than it was from easy to medium.

I guess what I'm trying to ask, is how long will it take to really click? I'm getting frustrated failing songs over and over (some I can nail on the first try) but some of these songs are really really tough. I can't even imagine trying expert level.
Just keep playing songs you can play on hard, that will improve your fingering

Go to practice with the songs that really trouble you and play them at a slower speed a few times to so you can figure out finger placement, then speed it up. If you keep at it, you'll eventually get it.

I have the same trouble playing the game on hard. Medium is just way to easy, while hard is just insane for me sometimes. I can play some of the songs on hard really well, but others just blow me away.

One thing that helps me is to play on two player. Play whichever mode lets you share the notes, in other words, you play some notes, then the other player plays some. This lets me concentrate on a smaller set of notes and I can get back to sanity for a few seconds while i'm waiting for my next set of notes. I dont know if it'll help you, but it helps me somewhat.

If your toughest part is during solos and picking up on which note is coming up, etc., try going back to Medium with Hyperspeed on 5. Maybe that'll help.

            Re: Guitar Hero 3

I think I'm starting to "get it" now. Practice mode is a must, especially for songs that I don't know very well. For stuff like Welcome to the Jungle, When you were young, and some of the other ones I'm familiar with, I can anticipate the notes better. The Priestess song really kicked my butt, and so did the song by AFI. I made it to the Slash battle, but i'm having a tough time getting powerups because I keep messing up notes.

And for what it's worth, I seem to be having better luck with keeping my index finger on red and just moving my hand to hit the green notes and the r/g chords.

Well well, looks like Activision may be stepping up to the plate on the PS3 issues after all...(it's for 360 too, btw)

Good to know some people other than me actually have the PS3 version.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Update Is On the Way!

Neversoft and Activision/Red Octane have been working hard on an upcoming free update for Guitar Hero III, which will address several issues that have been noted in the forums.

Pending Approval from Microsoft and Sony, the new update will:

                        * Improve Online Quick Match results and reduce "Failed to Connect to Server" messages.

                        * Introduce calibration screen improvements, helping users with high lag AV systems, and Playstation 3 users with Dolby Digital enabled.

                        * Add the Co-Op Quickplay mode for Playstation 3 users.

                        * Enable the Hyperspeed cheat to work in online games.

                        * Include various stability improvements and fixes.

As we launch this update, we look forward to hearing back from the community on how it works for you, so that we can continue to give you the best play experience possible.

                        Thanks again for playing!

Funny thing is, I had originally intended to get the 360 version, but everyone was sold out of the bundle with the wireless Gibson... so I went PS3 instead.

Honestly, I'm happy it worked out this way... Now I don't have to turn my speakers all way the way just to drown out the roar of the 360...

Haha! I'm just kidding everyone, so don't start a war

The developers made a rather stupid move when they took out Co-Op mode in favor of Co-Op Career mode. Now people who only play it with other people a few times a year, can't play any song they want - because you have to unlock all the songs first. Quite a stupid move. My friends had fun with the battle, but wanted co-op... So they put GHII back in - because you can just play the songs.

Once the songs are unlocked in career mode, you can play co-op... it's under Quick Play.
