Splinter Cell Conviction remains 360 exclusive

Speaking during a conference call following the company's third-quarter financial report, Ubisoft has re-confirmed that Splinter Cell Conviction will be an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Sam Fisher's highly anticipated and somewhat delayed next outing was announced as an Xbox 360 and Games for Windows exclusive back at X06 in September 2006, but after reports of development problems and a perpetually slipping release date Ubisoft went quiet on the game.

Today the publisher confirmed that the game is due for release in the 12-month period starting April 1, 2009. If you don't own an Xbox 360 and were hoping the delays were down to a new multi-format development strategy, you're sadly still out of luck.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is Part of Ubisoft's Christmas Lineup

      by Eric Bush

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Ubisoft has confirmed that the much-anticipated Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction is part of the publisher's Christmas 2009 lineup. Along with the fifth installment in the Splinter Cell video game series, the French publisher also plans to release Assassin's Creed 2, James Cameron's Avatar, plus Rabbids Go Home and Red Steel 2 for the Nintendo Wii. In Splinter Cell Conviction, you are a fugitive and you’re being ruthlessly hunted by the very government you once served. To survive, build an underground network of allies who will help you obtain hi-tech gadgets and stay one step ahead of your pursuers as you struggle to unmask the forces that want you dead. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Looking forward to seeing how it looks now, because it sounds like it has changed quite a bit from what we've seen previously.

Watching Gametrailers Bonus Round E3 Preview and Geoff Keighley says from what he's heard, your not even going to recognize Splinter Cell, because it's so radically different. Dude from Game Informer says he's heard very exciting things about it, but no one can see it, because Microsoft won't let anybody until E3 - though OXM has hinted at it being the cover story of their next issue, which should be hitting subscribers in about two weeks.

It's kind of a relief it got delayed so long because I think people (me included) just needed a break from the franchise.

I agree. Splinter Cell releases seemed to be becoming pretty standard and not really a big deal anymore. I think this could really rejuvenate the franchise.

Role playing games? Splinter Cell isn't one of those.

My hype for this game kind of died because of all the delays and lack of info over time but I'm interested to see what they show at E3.

I remember reading a preview for this about 2 years ago that savaged the game. Basically stating nonsensical logic and strange design. I think the developers may have taken heed and gone back to the drawing board. I hope they did because Splinter Cell is a franchise that deserves another brilliant entry. I adored the last gen games and liked Double Agent on 360 quite a bit.

The long delay won't matter if the game is stunning. If its just average then people will be mad. eg. Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway.

Yeah who knows what this game is going to be like now, I wouldn't be that suprised if it is significantly different than what we initially saw.

Community Manager on the Ubisoft forums posted this:

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Mr. Fisher and his supporting cast and in that time the game itself has changed.

Some ideas worked, some didn’t. Some things evolved into entirely new things and some aspects we created were perfect the first time around.

Due to these changes and evolutions, there is a significant amount of misinformation about what exactly the game is and what it might be. As there will likely be an influx of new users into these forums as things ramp up we want to ensure that both you, the current forum community, and these new members understand exactly what the game is.

For the near future (don't worry, it won't be long) we’ll be closing and removing a lot of gameplay and story speculation, rumors, and misinformation that has developed within the community so we can start with a clean slate and no one will be confused by existing comments, rumours or speculation. When you see the game again your questions will definitely be answered and we believe you will be blown away!
