    Mass Effect Discussion

I suck at the whole impressions thing, but I got it yesterday and I know people are interested in the game, so here go some spoiler-free impressions.

It's pretty hot so far. I'm about 2 hours into the game and I think I just completed the prologue mission. That mission was heavily scripted and didn't allow for much exploration, but it served as a great introduction to the story and what you're up against. It didn't offer much of a tutorial in the way of using abilities, equipping weapons and upgrades, etc, but anyone who played either KOTOR game should be right at home with this.

The story so far is very immersive and the voice acting and cutscene facial graphics are all very good. I also like that you're given a choice between several general sentiments when you reply to someone, but then your character says something different than what you see as your on-screen choices, while expressing the sentiment you chose. Like if you choose "Hell no!" your guy won't just say "Hell no," he'll say something different while expressing that general sentiment.

I wasn't impressed with the combat in the preview videos I saw, as it seemed kind of like a stripped down version of something like GRAW2, but I have to say I'm impressed by that so far as well. I'm using the Vanguard class which is basically a shotgun-wielding damage class, so I like to get in close to the mobs. There have been a couple battles from distance where I've had to use cover and flank enemies to get close to them while instructing my other two squad mates where to go, who to attack, and what skills to use. The enemy uses cover and generally seems pretty intelligent. It's not FPS-level AI, but it's good enough.

The combat is all real-time, but at any point you can hold down one of the bumpers to freeze the action. I forget which is which, but one lets you choose what each of your squad members has equipped. So you can point somewhere in the distance where you want one squad member to move, flip to the equip screen to equip them with a sniper rifle, then order them to attack a given target and they'll pick it off. The other bumper is for skills, where you can choose which squad member is using what skill on whom at any given time. It's not round-based combat, so you have to wait for cooldowns measured in seconds instead of like the KOTOR games where you'd wait for that round of combat to be over. I like this more and it's definitely more fun. Pressing either bumper freezes the game while you do that stuff, btw.

Overall it's very immersive and very fun. It seems like I've arrived somewhere that I can truly explore, instead of just kind of moving from place to place like the prologue mission has you doing. It took me a little while to get used to the menus with respect to how to equip weapons and select weapon and armor upgrades, but now I'm getting the hang of it and it's generally the same model as the KOTOR games.

Also, a final note. At the start of the game you can select a few background characteristics about yourself, like your upbringing, your military service, and your general demeanor. It seems like that definitely plays a role in how you're treated, how others speak to you, and possibly which dialogue options are available to you as well. So keep that in mind.

Can't wait to play more later. Let me know if you have any more questions I didn't touch on.

I'm not sure if you tried but... would you recommend keeping the game with the grain filter on or off ?

and though you said you're not too familiar with the bumper controls do you feel it's something you can pick up on and become very natural with overtime ?

I didn't try turning it off, but I kind of like the effect it gives. It gives the graphics a kind of celluloid realness to them instead of leaving things looking too pristine and, well, fake. I am going to try turning off the motion blur though, because I find it annoying to have things blurry whenever there's some sudden motion during a cutscene or character interaction.

I pretty much left everything on default settings and fired up the game.

And on the bumper controls, they're pretty intuitive. Everything in the menus is controlled by rotating the left analog stick around a circle and choosing the options. So you hold down the bumper and then rotate around the circle to choose weapons and skills. It's nice that it's not a completely separate menu and functionality though, so it still feels like you're in the battle even though you've paused the action and are cycling through skill and weapon options. In the KOTOR games it felt more like a big break from the action while you assigned actions to all your party members and the KOTOR games, as far as I can recall, didn't have nearly as seamless an option for hot-switching your characters' weapons like that.

No, not yet. I'm exploring a new place and it seems pretty large, but I don't even know where my ship is so I can't leave or anything.

I ordered the game from an online retailer. Load times are minimal and infrequent so far.

Obvious graphics aside... if you were to make a choice between Mass Effect and either KOTOR games (gotta love Bastila) which would you choose ?

How deep are conversations with NPCs?

Do they reach a point of limitation early in conversations or have you seen questions/answers to be deeper than say Oblivion?

Oblivion seemed to get old and repetitive fast with NPC conversations as you were extremely limited on questions you could ask once you progressed far enough into the game.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

The conversations do reach a point of limitation, but at that point (in most conversations) one of your choices turns to "investigate" and you can ask pointed questions about alien races, or technology, or other NPCs. "What can you tell me about so-and-so." You usually have three types of responses to questions, but like I said before, your actual answer is finer than just a three word phrase you select on the screen, so it keeps conversation fresh and interesting and forces you to pay attention to it.

Also, as your charm and intimidate skills get higher (mine are very low right now), that will also open up new avenues in conversations.

So far I have no idea what road I'm on. I'm still kind of starting the story and I don't think I've made any earth-shattering decisions so far that have drastically affected which way the story turns. This is still the expository stage.

The NPCs who know you, or have heard of you, seem to judge you initially by the character background choices you make at the beginning of the game. So if you have a reputation for being a badass, they're going to regard you as such. I'm also not sure if your character's voice or general way of talking is affected by that as well, but I do know that my character's general tone and way of speaking is pretty much exactly as his background would indicate, even when he gives terse answers like, "I have to go now."
