the constant online connection is to prevent and limit any potential hacks on the game, not just limited to game cheats but stuff like weapon/item dupes and gold cheats. Considering the real money auction house is going live in less than a week, the constant online connection helps ensure the legitimacy of all characters, weapons and items. That said, you can play the game entirely single player if you choose to, you just have to be connected to Blizzard servers to do so.

Which is the worst decision Blizzard has made since "Starcraft Ghost".

I got in for 5 minutes before I got disconnected.

While I understand the decision behind the always-online requirement, it is fundamentally flawed as so many have mentioned. They could've come up with a different solution but chose this very flawed one instead.

Just wondering - is there any reason to play on Hardcore mode aside from the thrill of only having one life and maybe some extra acheivements? Like, maybe the item drops are better or something?

This game is definately geared towards team play, when there's 3 players in a game you need to stick together in the later acts or you will die. Also it seems like the Witch Doctor is a key player because his summons can take alot of the attention off you. Uber and I met some difficult packs and died a few times because they would just surround us and there was no way to escape.

I disagree, in this day and age most people's computers are online anyways. It's only a huge deal to many because they don't like being told they have to be online, despite many of them already being online.

Now granted, if the servers aren't up and people can't play then yes, it's an issue and that's probably the biggest issue, but I would expect after the launch this will stabilize.

                  Most is the keyword.

If your Internet goes out. You can't play. If you're on the road with a laptop and want to play but can't connect, you can't play.

This isn't an MMO and isn't need to be connected online. IMO it's stupid and annoying to the user.

I also understand why they did it but feel the downside far outweighs the upside.

Anyways: i think I screwed up. I started on Normal level (didnt see where to change it) and in the small amount of time things seem easy.
                    Does normal get harder?
And where do u change difficulty? I was so excited I probably just overlooked it.

I totally agree. Blizzard did what's good for them, not the consumer. I didn't get to play the game which I purchased a hardcopy of because it took 4 hours to download. It's the same crap with many PC games. For some reason Steam won't let me connect to play Modern Warfare 3 single player. Single player. A game in which I own the disc. Yet I get to read "game not available". I think it may take consumers filing lawsuits because these developers are more or less stealing from us. I paid $60 for a game I can't play. It's no wonder console gaming is so big. PC gaming is a huge pain in the butt.

Everyone starts out on normal. When you beat normal you unlock nightmare difficulty, then hell, then inferno. And normal does get a little harder towards the end.

IMO the upside outweights the downside. Diablo 2 was an amazing game until all the bots and dupes started running wild. The thing I don't understand (and it's basically turned me off to the D3 forums because so many people are complaining) is why buy a game that has stated that an online connection is required and then "demand" offline?

Maybe it's just me and dealing with other numerous launch day fails but I felt that D3s launch went better then I expected. When I woke up and played around 4am I didn't expect to get on right away knowing so many people were logging in, but I managed to get in and play a few hours before work.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see any other selectable difficulties either, and I'm assuming you have to beat the game to unlock tougher ones.

There is one thing you can do for some added difficulty though - Hardcore mode once you have a character reach level 10. It won't increase the difficulty itself, but there's one important thing that's different - you only get one life to live, and if you die that's it for that character. In other words, you might play it a bit more cautiously knowing that

Correct on beating normal to get to NM.

As melman said, things do get more difficult (although that A2 boss is still head scratchingly easy).

Hope to see some of you on today/tonight I'm going for completion of normal.

How much further did you get after I got off? I'd be down for another all nighter after I get out of work, assuming the servers are up and running.

Not much. I killed that boss a few more times and got to level 21.
