Re: Is GTA IV the GOAT?

Nope...it's pales in comparison to the previous GTA titles and Bully. There was just more "freedom" and a higher fun factor, both keys in my book. I finished the story in all three previous GTA titles yet I can't find a reason to do so for IV. It's boring, the constant mission restarting has finally pissed me off, and the characters are extremely unlikeable. The fluff about "dates" is worthless as well. Going on a mission and then getting a stupid call about "Niko, let's get some drinks" and crap was terrible. I won't even get started on Brucie...the most annoying character of all time.

My game of all time? Super Mario Bros. 3. Seriously fun, exciting, innovative, easy to play, addictive, and in my book it doesn't lose it's charm...in fact I've gone through it twice on the Wii Virtual Console, remembered every secret, and had nearly as much fun as when I was a kid going through it.

For the current generation of games Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, BioShock, and Uncharted to name a few all surpass GTA IV.

Re: Is GTA IV the GOAT?

      Not even close for me.

It's not even the best, or second best GTA in my mind.

For me, it's 1) San Andreas 2) Vice City... obviously those can be interchangable as there were little things I loved more about SA, but definitely those are my top two.

And I'm a GTA-fiend, I love those games, I tried to get 100% in as many of them as possible, but I have to say with GTAIV I just wasn't driven. The story was bland, the additions were lame, yes it was a tremendously made game, the scenery, the people, etc. were all top-notch but there is no way it's greatest of all-time. To me, if you have to pick something GOAT in these past couple of years Bioshock hands down. It was a movie inside of a game and completely changed the first-person shooter market and changed in game story-telling forever.

Hell no. It didn't hold me interest long enough to play though it. After the bank heist I was done.

One thing about BioShock that bothers the hell out of me in all the "Greatest of..." talk is that the ending was an absolute giant turd. The entire game, IMO, lost some of it's luster on the whole after the:

Not to mention that the good/evil choices really weren't that effective or meaningful in the game either (after all, there was ONLY one choice). Still, a damn fine game, better for me than GTA IV, but not "Greatest of All Time".

Re: Is GTA IV the GOAT?

            It's one of the GOATs.

And all Vice City is a comedic version of "Scarface" so to say that was better than IV is ludacrous(*sp)

San Andreas, while great, does get stale very quick. Like somebody mentioned, the fact that you HAVE to swim for a certain amount of time before you can advance in the game is kind've dumb IMO.

Vice City, funny characters and funny scenes but that game got boring real quick.

III definitely set the bar for free-roaming games and is also one of the GOATs as well but IV raised the bar even higher with it's Sandbox=style. It just about captures almost every single thing about NYC and the subtle things in the game(listening to random people's phone conversations, internet, watching tv, etc)set this game apart from the others.

And the graphics, simply amazing. It may not be GOW spectacular(which is what part of GOW is known for)but it's definitely not far behind.

It's just amazing, in my opinion, that I can pick up this game after a few months of not playing it and still be in awe in how great and amazing this game is.

Not sure why people made such a big deal out of that, it took like 8 minutes TOPS.

And seriously, swimming was too stale, yet playing pool with Lil Jacob 7 times or taking Brucie on helicopter rides to advance in the game wasn't repetitive and stale?

I absolutely agree. Like I said, if i had to pick a greatest of all time using these past few years I'd use Bioshock even through the ****ty ending. However, GOAT has not been in this generation, there's no way. I can pick countless others from PS2 to Nintendo that I think are more worthy of GOAT over GTAIV.

That's sad though, because trust me... I was SO pumped about GTA IV. I preordered it in 07. I was working at a game store that day, I basically ran our midnight sale party. I have banners, posters, etc. I was ready for it to be that.

Never said those two weren't stale either.

But why should I have to swim UNDERWATER for a certain amount of time to advance in a game? Where the hell they do this at?

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying GTA IV is Flawless itself because I know it's not(I could sit here all day and pick that game apart to death)but some people hype up San Andreas as if it was some revolutionary when it was just a Hardcore, Thugged-out version of The Sims with a few "N" words dropped here and there.

Now the Soundtrack in San Andreas....best BY FAR out of all the games and I was a little disappointed with the Soundtrack for IV because I felt it could've added a WHOLE lot more to the game.

And honestly(even I've done this a couple of times)comparing this to SR is really unfair because that's like comparing the roles of a Defensive End that plays in a 3-4 and a Defensive End that play in a 4-3. They both do two different jobs in their respective roles.

Great point. The "man dates" really irritated me more than anything(the driving was a close second, but you get used to the physics after awhile). Also the lack of customization, like I stated previously, really took away some of the potential "fun factor" for me. This is all just my opinion of course.

I enjoyed the game a great deal. I'd put it on my short list of GOAT games, I can't tell you it's number 1, but as far as I'm concerned it's in the group of games that just completely occupied my time and I enjoyed tremendously.
