Ok, but how do the cymbals work? If I plug in the blue, is then the blue pad then a cymbal instead of a pad?

      Re: Rock Band 2

I haven't liked the Metallica stuff across the board, not just RB 2. Enter Sandman and One were great, since then I haven't been pleased. Battery? Trapped Under Ice? Am I Evil? Give me something I know the words to! Sanitarium,Master of Puppets,Unforgiven,Fade to Black,Seek & Destroy,For Whom the Bell Tolls,Nothing Else Matters,Sad but True, cover of Stone Cold Crazy or Whiskey in the Jar...and so on. There's singers too!

For that matter what happend to:
""Metallica is one of the best loved bands in the world and their albums redefined hard rock and metal. Its one of the bands we had to bring to the Rock Band experience," said Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and CEO of Harmonix. "Rock Band will allow gamers to jam with the guys through their long, successful career, from young, raw talent to mega stars, playing the hard-rocking sounds that the band is known for.""

Though no where near as dissapointing as AC/DC. Don't even get me started on that.

Nah, it's both. They're saying that the cymbals will send out a different input, especially in freestyles. So if you go B/B/B/B in a fill, but you alternate a cymbal and the pad, it should alternate sounds.

In scripted note charts, it's song context sensitive, I believe.

How would they differentiate, on the note-charts, whether you would be hitting the blue pad or the blue cymbal?

But that's really the point. If they are suddenly cymbals, but I hit it and it makes a drum sound, I don't feel I'm getting anything out of them. I'd like to know visually that I'm supposed to hit a cymbal.

My other concern is those cymbals are not made by Haromonix, they are a 3rd party accessory, so are these going to work the same as the later released Harmonix ones?

If these worked that way, visual indicator, working perfectly, I'd go Rock Band for the drums over the Guitar Hero ones. I'm just concerned since these still feel like an afterthought where the GH ones feel like they they designed note charts for them from the start.

I know what you mean Extreme. They are basically useless if the game doesn't distinguish between a blue cymbal or a blue drum pad.

But, if Harmonix is backing the MadCatz cymbals, then there must be a plan or idea in game for them. So now I'm torn again.

You would hope so. I don't expect much anymore, and don't get very disappointed when things aren't what I expect.

Harmonix has spoken very specifically about involving the Mad Catz drums in their overall plan. The game is made for them to be in there. I don't want to misquote them and say they're doing something they aren't, but I have heard them talk very enthusiastically about how the cymbals work, and how hardcore drummers will really love what they've done with it. With their track record, that's enough for me for now.

Yeah, I guess your right. Harmonix does have a good track record. I'll bite. Rock Band 2 FTW!

I'll be honest, I'm seriously moving more towards ION.

I figure, I plan to play RB for many years, assuming they continue releasing stuff.

$300 for something I'll use for a good while isn't that bad. Yeah, if I was only going to use this for 6 months or so then I'd think its crazy, but thinking long term, it seems like a solid investment, especially since I can hook it up to GarageBand and use it like a real drumset.

The Garageband point is what keeps a pebble in my shoe. They took away the wire, so I can't hook up the new drums to GB. That's a real bummer. But when I look at the full price, which is 500 bucks(if you get everything), the musician in me says "just spend the money on a real electric drumset when the time comes".

I really am torn, but I'm leaning towards the standard RB2 kit. This is one of the toughest gaming decisions I've ever had to make though.

When you hook up to Garageband, do you know if the ION kit reads directly, or does it read as a 360 controller. If it reads as a controller, there will almost definitely be lag.
