It's amazing that I beat the game, and I'm still seeing new things all the time.

When I first started playing it, I did too. I didn't understand how I was supposed to know whether the CPU was bluffing and what a good "bid" was on my part. Then I figured it out: make a bid that can easily be topped by a CPU player so it gets the responsibility away from you and let one of them call a bluff on the other or it will come back around to you where the last bid was most likely a bluff, especially if you don't have any die that the last bid was on. It was much, much easier after that. I think in two subsequent games in Thieves Landing once I figured that out I lost a combined 1 die. I was getting smoked before that because I had no idea what I was doing.

I'm so glad I picked this game up. It is truly amazing. I was never a fan of the "Free roam" GTA's. I don't like single player games. That being said, I love this game! It is just so well done from the sound, to the variance in activities. There's always something exciting happening and you don't know what it'll be.

My online experience has been rough so far, but I think that'd change once I get more used to the shooting. I hope in the experienced and veteran lobbies that the "casual" aim is taken off so I don't keep getting owned by noobs.

well as far as the top 3 go, you need to tame it before you buy it. Also when you buy it, if your horse dies, you can replace it immediately so no getting stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Free Roam is unplayable if you get stuck with certain people.

I was hunting in Tall Trees and stumbled across 2 guys being chased by boar and bears, so I start shooting the animals, thinking I was helping them out. WRONG, they were trying to hurdle those animals, and they decided to make it their personal mission to make my game playing a living hell. They followed me each time I fast traveled and just slaughtered me any chance I got.

How is the online? I'll try it out after I beat the game.

By the way, what is the average time it took you guys to beat the game? I'm on 14 hours thus far and currently in Mexico.

I beat the game in 26 hours, I think.

And I didn't do a whole lot of hunting or side missions.

I wouldn't say it's unplayable with strangers. I get pissed when some random comes up and kills me or my friend when we specifically say "we're doing something don't be an ******* and kill us" but once they do we change our focus to killing that person until they leave, it works pretty well

If it dies, you can re-call another one from your inventory.

                          Re: Red Dead Redemption

Is there any way to walk around with gun drawn and not be forced to auto holster after 5 seconds or so? Other than holding the left trigger?

Has anyone been playing single player with the mini map off? Any tips? How frustrating is it? I've found myself staring at the mini map when going cross country and not enjoying the scenery.

Also I'm trying to come up with some house rules for a 'hardcore mode' on my next play through. I'm thinking...

                          Hardcore aiming...maybe.

No mini map. I'll be using the actual foldout map when lost or possibly the in game map with most of the markers turned off.

No whistling for a horse when my horse isn't within a relatively close distance. For example when getting my horse killed in the wilderness, I'll have to walk or steal transportation back to the nearest town.

Limit my weapon choice to pistol, one thrown weapon, the knife, and a shotgun, or rifle, or repeater. That is if I leave town/camp with the shotgun on my back, I can't switch to a rifle or repeater. Possible caveat being I can have a designated backup weapon on my horse so I can switch to it when near/on my horse.

Possibly some limit to the amount of ammunition I can carry.

Gotta sleep/camp once every 24 hours or so.

Anyone have any suggestions in keeping with the spirit of a hardcore mode without going over board?

No, it's not at all. I've been watching my girlfriend play on normal, and it almost looks like it wouldn't be very fun.
