      Re: Fallout: New Vegas

      Interview: Josh Sawyer

What's the expected playtime of New Vegas - with and without sidequests?

I generally only give my own experiences as a reference point since I don't want people to be disappointed by a generic game length number. On my last playthrough I spent seventy hours doing the main quest and a large number (maybe thirty five) of the side quests. It's a big game.
What changes have you made gameplay wise compared to Fallout 3 and why?

We've tried to make changes across the board to improve various aspects of gameplay from combat to controlling companions.

Most notably, the shooting mechanics have been refined. We now have an optional "true ironsights" feature that allows the player to aim down the actual sights instead of using the targeting reticule. The input for firing has been smoothed out as well, so players should find that firing feels more responsive. Companions can now be controlled through a quick interface called the Companion Wheel. All of the typical things you want to tweak on companions -- inventory, ranged vs. melee preference, giving them quick healing via Stimpaks -- can all be accomplished through the wheel. It makes the process much quicker than it was in Fallout 3.

We've introduced a new crafting system in Fallout: New Vegas. The player uses workbenches (as in Fallout 3), campfires, and reloading benches to make a large variety of items. We've also created a new crafting interface that makes managing recipes and ingredients straightforward for the player and offers a lot of flexibility for modders on the PC.

For players who want an increased level of challenge, we've also implemented a Hardcore Mode. This is something that players can opt into at the beginning of the game. It introduces a number of elements that make the game significantly more challenging. Healing always takes place over time, crippled limbs require a Doctor's Bag or an NPC to heal, sleeping in beds does not restore health, and ammunition has weight. Additionally, the player has to keep track of dehydration, starvation, and sleep deprivation meters. If the Courier accumulates too much on any meter, he or she will start to suffer penalties and can eventually die.

If players find that Hardcore Mode is a bit too much for them, they are free to turn it off. However, players who play through the entire game with Hardcore Mode enabled will receive an achievement (Steam and Xbox 360) or trophy (PlayStation 3) for their efforts.
What was the decision behind the definitive ending? There was a lot of moaning and arguing about Fallout 3 having a hard ending and in the end we got a DLC that allowed for an open ending. Don't you expect the same to happen?

Sure, but I also think that would happen if we allowed players to play past the end of the game but didn't show the impact of their actions on the world. We felt that having an endgame denouement with a large number of far-reaching effects was too important to either allow the player to continue playing in a world that didn't react to any of those things or make the endgame states minimalistic. There is a lot of reactivity to your actions at the end of the game and we give the player a very clear warning when they are approaching the main plot's conclusion.
Both of the Original Fallout games had a hardcore SPECIAL system that promoted specializing. Fallout 3 made it very easy to make a god-like character that could master almost everything. Which way is New Vegas going and how do you achieve that?

New Vegas forces players to specialize their characters more. Our formula for calculating skill points makes it much harder to max out skills and we have fewer permanent skill-boosting items in the world. Additionally, we have changed our perk rate so players gain a perk every other level instead of one per level. PC users who wish to modify the perk rate through the GECK have the ability to do so, as I know some players like the Fallout 3 rate and some players prefer the rate of one perk per three levels found in the original games.
Science and repair completely changed in their use from Fallout 1/2 to Fallout 3. In the original games they were used to explore different pathways and find solutions unique to a character setup. In Fallout 3 they became utility skills you pretty much were required to have. How are they used in New Vegas?

We use those skills to unlock special quest and dialogue options and to give workbench and repair bench crafting options. Science is still used to hack terminals and Repair is still used to repair gear, but the repair system has changed in Fallout: New Vegas. While the Repair skill still affects efficiency (how much repair you get out of an item), it no longer determines the maximum condition of an item. That is, you can repair an item to 100% condition even with a bad Repair skill. It will just take a lot of items. We also have a "notch" in the condition bar that some people may have noticed. This notch marks the point where an item moves from needing repairs to needing "maintenance". Maintenance means that the item is either doing maximum damage (if a weapon) or protecting for maximum Damage Threshold (if apparel). Maintaining an item gives it a buffer of condition before its effectiveness starts to suffer.

        edit

But I did read they give you a "point of no return" warning so that is good.

Aha, community input at it's best.

That's where I'll start. I'll definitely enjoy the extra realism.

I don't like the "no return" ending but i can see why they do it. As long as they give me plenty of warning I can still go off exploring before i decide to finally finish it so it's that huge a deal.

Seriously there are not enough hours in a day with this and nba 2k11.......

WOW!!!!!!! This will be the mode for me. I hope I can get this game going into the weekend. I guess it won't really matter because it will take months for me to complete. Thanks mikenoob.

I don't know if I want to get this game or not. I've heard nothing, but good for the past Fallout games and I was thinking about hopping on to this game. With the delay of GT5, I canceled that preorder and have no other game I want until next year, I thought of getting this game. I definitely have time to put into this game and I'm all for customizing your guy in terms of skills/perks. Is this an easy game to get into, or would I be all confused on what to do/where to go?

I was reluctant with Fallout 3 as I had never played that type of game. I purchased the strategy guide to help me get started and it was a wise decision for me. Took me a while to figure it out but when I did. Man that was a good game.

You shouldn't have a problem. Fallout 3 was the first ever RPG I played. It was confusing at first but the learning curve wasn't too steep and I really enjoyed it.
