    Re: Resistance 3

Tried out the beta, and shortly grew bored to tears. At least, in the sense that it didn't give me anything exciting that any other FPS I currently own hasn't (unless some of the leveling up perks are nice).

On to crack open KillZone again. Haven't played that one in a while.

          Beta Tester appreciation program

After 3 long years the time is almost upon us. Resistance 3 will soon ship to the masses. But before it does we wanted to take this opportunity to thank all you fans. Not only have you given us valuable feedback, but you have supported us and without you, there would be no Insomniac. Never has this been more prevalent than in our Resistance 3 Beta. It has not been the smoothest sailing, but the feedback and help we received from Beta participants has been invaluable.

To start we wanted to get everyone back together for one last go at the Beta before launch. We would like as many players as possible to join us and celebrate the conclusion of the Beta and the launch of Resistance 3. We are offering all players (starting August 30th) an exclusive MP skin... R2 SRPA Nathan Hale. All you have to do is jump on the Beta and go a few rounds between August 30th and September 4th. The Hale skin will then be ready for use when you pop in your new copy of R3.

But wait there's more! While many people love and praise the new direction of Resistance 3’s MP, we also wanted to give a nod to longtime fans. We are announcing a new playlist called *Classic Hardcore*. It's got all the exciting R3 action minus Berserks and abilities. This is for those players who want to go toe-to-toe without the extras. Classic Hardcore will be available Day 1!

We are not content on ending things there though. We know Resistance fans are a little twisted too. So we have also decided to offer R3 Beta players a special MP taunt to help you gloat in your awesomeness. This taunt is definitely NSFW, so don’t let your mom see.

Again you will have to play the Beta starting August 30th to qualify for these gifts. Just a reminder, starting today the Beta will be open to the public.

And with that we say thank you and ask you to come join us. You ARE the Resistance!

Resistance 3: Health regeneration feature removed

Refreshing. That’s the first word that comes to mind when I learned about Resistance 3 developer, Insomniac Games’ decision to drop health regeneration. Why is this move a breath of fresh air? It shows their willingness to buck the first person shooter herd mentality.

The FPS market is really quite getting saturated. Just how many FPS titles that aren’t named Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3 can the market support? There’s a point where the market’s carrying capacity might be exceeded. The only difference in many FPS titles now are the settings. Zombie killer fps? Done. Space zombie killer fps? Done. Time travel fps? Done. Cowboy/western fps? Done. Updated tex/mex border western fps? Done. They all seem to feed from the same tired trough of ideas. They all work from the same general set of features.

That’s why it was refreshing to know that Resistance 3 won’t be staying on the health regeneration bandwagon any longer. Score 1 for out of the herd thinking. According to Insomniac Games’ Marcus Smith, “For Resistance 3, we’re trying to give people a game that they can play how they want. You can use cover or run-and-gun, and we wanted to make sure there were penalties for that. Survival is a big theme, so we took away [health regeneration]. People have gotten kind of used to regen, but the fact of the matter is that if you can just hide behind something and reset, it’s not very exciting. So, we took that away and we’re going back to the roots of first-person shooters, where it’s more pickup-based and when you have low health, you have to play very differently.”

What I like about this decision is that they considered the players’ perspective and tied it to the general strategy and feel of the game. Tis shows a deep level of customer-centered thinking instead of the usual “let’s throw it in there because everybody else is doing it” type of mentality that works to produce generic fare that works to further saturate the market.

                Re: Resistance 3

Interesting. I did always think the whole regenerating health system very unrealistic (especially in a game like COD where you are a human fighting other humans) and took away a fair bit of the suspense of fire fights.

Famitsu gave it a 34/40, the highest they have given for any Resistance game by one point.

Resistance 3′s Mandatory Install Size Revealed

While some titles do manage to load directly from the game’s disc, an increasingly large amount of PS3 games require an install. Coming out in September, Resistance 3 will need an install in order to play, with the HDD space used far outstripping the space demanded by Resistance 2.

Resistance 2 only needed 350MB of the PS3′s HDD, but Resistance 3 will take up 1.5GB. Luckily, the 5-7 minute install won’t be entirely boring as a motion comic that shows the timeline of the Chimera invasion plays for the first few minutes.

A new developer diary has surfaced for Insomniac’s upcoming Resistance 3. Players will be able to get their hands on the many weapons shown in the video below in Resistance 3 when it is launched on September 6.

                        Re: Resistance 3

Some impressions from different people in the GAF R3 thread.

Atmosphere is very reminiscent of RFoM. It feels literally like you against the world with deep odds against you.
Just having that classic R:FoM feel alone makes it better than Resistance 2. Traversing dark corridors with Chimera moaning out of sight is quite creepy, and being able to utilize the weapon wheel makes combat so much more fun.

I'd say it's on par with R:FoM, with the graphical bump edging it forward. The particle effects alone are amazing.
Final game looks way better than the beta/preview code.

                        Gorgeous.
I am still amazed by graphics, effects, real-time lightning, particles, depth-of-field, characters and overall design approach.

Hell, overall design IS my favorite part of the experience. Instead of going "bigger is better" and gearing towards Hollywood spectacle of explosions, highscraper-sized monsters, etc, everything has been toned down in order to make it more realistic, believable and immersive.

Everything is much more *private*, *subjective* and *isolated*. Atmosphere of horror, desolation, country ripper apart by war, crazy twists and protagonists - everything is made so *human* and so *against all odds*.

I am gearing for the first co-op playthrough as soon as official servers are up, I hope tomorrow.
I'd say it took me around 9 hours. Depends on the difficulty and how skilled you are, obviously, but that's the ballpark.

                        ...

Resistance 3: What Happened at Abbey Road

When we set out to make Resistance 3, we wanted to make it an emotional, personal story of Joseph Capelli’s harrowing journey to New York City in the face of certain death. It’s a brutal game, showing how humanity struggles to survive under the crushing weight of the Chimera. A big element of that was making sure that our score and soundtrack represented this new emotional payload. It was a sincere pleasure on the part of Insomniac Games to work with Composer Boris Salchow on the score for Resistance 3. Boris was here constantly, seeing the game and talking to our team. He wanted to be invested in the story and create a truly great score, and we’re confident that he’s done just that.

The multiplayer feels better after the 2.05 update. Movement and aiming is more precise, I'm no longer fighting the controls. I really wish you had the option to disable the camera blur and zooming in/out when you sprint though.

I hope the improvements extend to the multiplayer. The single player looking better was a given. It's the blurring that's the biggest problem for me. It doesn't help that according to Digital Foundry the game's native resolution is 960x704 (25% drop from R2). The resolution was the first thing that jumped out to me as being low and that's something that rarely changes late in development. You add upscaling and QAA (both of which are going to blur the image already) and the amount of camera blur just compounds things. I imagine this will be less noticeable in single player where the effects and vignetting are turned up to 11 -- you generally don't want to go to crazy with that stuff in multiplayer so characters silhouette stand out clearly.

Yeah the blur is my biggest gripe as it's just too distracting and I can only play for so long before my eyes start to get strained. Still looking forward to the final product regardless.
