If I have one complaint with the game - and this is a VERY MINOR quibble - it's the prerequisites in the perk trees. I understand level restrictions for some of the advanced perks, but I've never been a fan of prerequisites.

I'm currently downloading Skyrim from steam. I have never played a game like this, my only RPG experience comes from Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Thus, I know I am going to be in over my head. I already ran through the character creation process so I have a good idea of what character I'm going to be (Dark Elf ftw) but beyond that does anybody have any beginner's tips for somebody complete new to an Elder Scrolls game?

Especially when you need to burn a perk on something you don't care about to get something you do want. Ex: increased arrow recovery rate req. to get increased movement speed. With limited perks I would never burn one on recovery rate if I didn't have to and it's like basically saying increased movement speed is worth two perks points. I'm not so sure about that.

For newbies I think core concept to embrace #1 is you must have some idea of what you want your character to be early on. You cannot be a jack of all trades due to the leveling/perk system limitations. For example, I'm going thief so I'm spending on sneak, archery, alchemy, and light armor but won't have many perk points left after that.

Well, there a million different ways to play and enjoy the game, so you really can't go wrong, but if I had to share some advice I'd say:

            - You don't need to spend your perks right away. Save them until you get a feel for the game and how you want to play.

            - Try to focus on a few perk trees. You can easily fall into the trap of becoming a jack of all trades in this game and doing so will leave you underpowered later in the game.

            - Don't be afraid to wander off the beaten track. Sticking to the primary questline is probably the least fun thing you can do in the game.

            - Don't ignore smithing/alchemy/enchanting. The benefits of each can be huge (and they're all fun diversions).

            - Read as many of the lore books as you can; they add a lot of flavor to the experience.

              My advice would be:

              * Tell your significant others that your relationships will be negatively affected over the next few months and that you won't be seeing much of them.

*Tell your boss that you will seem tired and distracted at work all the time from staying up until 4am fighting dragons and exploring caves.

              * Put all of your other games in their cases and dust them regularly because there is a good chance they won't be used for a while.

              * purchase some vitamin D vitamins because you won't be seeing much sun for a while.

But seriously just go into it with an open mind and do a bit of exploring and try not to worry too much about the overall story to begin with. It will take time to get up to speed but you'll get their eventually and feel free to ask any questions here regardless of how 'newb' you think they are....

This, pick something and focus on it. Don't be a sneaky, dual wielding, archer, destruction mage, who's good at lock picking, heavy armor, Restoration, speech and smithing. That was my character the first time around, and while I did pretty well, my character could've been so much better. You don't want to limit yourself, but don't go overboard or you'll just end up kind of decent at everything and just get slaughtered later on.

I will say something about smithing/enchanting. Don't go overboard early here either in place of actual combat skills. Enemies level with you, and even though you'll end up with some sweet gear, In my experience I've found actual combat skills will get you further. I had a character who I focused on smithing, I ended up with best armor in the game but gained about 10 levels, all made up of just smithing skills. To test it out, I went up to some guards and started a fight, and got owned while wearing the best armor and weapons you could get. In contrast my level 15 character who I've only focused on two handed and heavy armor can wreck giants in no time with some skillful maneuvering. Others may have different experiences here though, I'd just wait till a little later on before going banana's with non combat skills.

I bought Skyrim on release day, but didn't have a chance to really dig into it until the long holiday weekend. MAN I love this game so far. First character is kind of a spellsword build -- 1H, heavy armor, and a little destruction magic. Every once in a while I'll shoot something with a bow or try and sneak just for grins, but I'm going mostly for the "wade into the enemies blasting everything that moves" camp. Wheeeeee!

Eventually I'll try something with more subtlety, but not just yet.

So I decided to, just for fun, test myself against all the towns, no potions just me and Lydia against all. To make a long story short, I survived but two of the open map towns got a little hairy when dragons decided to show. Things were interesting in Whiterun though since half the town fought on my side. It was really fun watching Eorlund and Vilkas chase one of the kids around.
