            Rock, Paper, Shotgun

The story is that I love XCOM, I’m so glad it was made and I expect to be playing it and replaying it for a long, long time to come. There are things, big and small, I would change or don’t see the reasoning for, but it all-told it does so much more than I ever thought possible, both in terms of resurrecting XCOM’s core values and making a turn-based strategy game with high-tech, 2012, thrilling presentation.

This isn’t a matter of a starving man grateful for the slimmest of pickings. XCOM is a bounteous strategy/roleplaying feast, and I’m not particularly dismayed that a couple of the side-dishes taste a bit suspect. It’s a triumph that XCOM even exists, so that it’s also bloody brilliant and thoroughly modern with it excites me to introverted core. X-COM’s tiny, precious world has seen many unwelcome invaders over the years, but trust me – this one comes in peace.

This game is a winner. So much craft has gone into its atmosphere, into innumerable small details that together add enormous depth and flavour to the world: the occasional conversations overheard while fiddling around in the base; the mission loading screen, which gives you a view of the troops inside the carrier, fidgeting and tapping their feet in transit; the ridiculously cute touch of soldiers acquiring nicknames like 'Longshot' or 'Odin' after a few missions; the memorial room for fallen warriors, with a cork board of photos on the wall, which records their names - and the fact that visiting it triggers, after a few seconds, the sound of a bagpipe march.

Near the campaign's end, there's a direct tribute to the original game's designers, the Gollop brothers, accompanied by an achievement called 'On the Shoulders of Giants'. It's a beautiful touch, a nod from one development team to another across the generations. They have something in common now. In their own time and place, each made a fantastic game called XCOM.

Charting a course through Earth’s imminent destruction is as unashamedly difficult as it was in 1994’s X-COM. It’s possible, through bad planning and bad management, to doom the planet early on, making the game feel unfair. Get it right, however – survive the stresses of management, and the strains of aliens – and you’ll feel like world’s greatest hero.
            Kotaku

XCOM is one of the most important strategy games in years. It's a great remake, sure, and that's enough for most longtime fans, but for everyone else, know that this is a truly accessible strategy game. To the point where, if you own a 360 or PS3, you can play this with a controller and not miss a thing.

In the end, long after veteran XCOM players have appreciated the effort and moved on, that will hopefully be this game's lasting achievement. That it took a project that only noisy, hardcore PC gamers should have cared about and, through window dressing, interface tweaks and some combat changes, turned it into a game that everyone can enjoy.

              re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

I'm glad I pre-ordered it, your link makes a good point about customizing units.

Oh dear, it turns out it's a first-person shooter with quick-time events and checkpoints after all. Move along, nothing…

I’m also very disappointed that much of the soldier customization – primarily armour colour, but a few more visual options too – has been partitioned off into pre-order DLC (no doubt made available as an extra purchase later). This stuff doesn’t lend you any in-game advantage, but as your attachment to your soldiers is such a critical part of the experience, and the ability to tweak their appearance such a critical part of that, a copy of the game with that element missing will be so much lesser. It opens up a world of personal roleplaying and even a little strategic help – for instance, all my medics were given red armour so I’d know at a glance where they were in relation to the rest of the squad, rookies I’d dress in hot pink so I’d know not to freak out when they bought the farm, while any soldier that made it to Sergeant would be themed to look like the Transformer I’d nickname them after. I understand the commercial need behind pre-order incentives, but this particular element plays such a huge part in the personalization of a game that’s all about personalization. So I feel sort of bad about saying this, but do what you can to get a copy of the game with that stuff included, basically. Retail copies have it in there, so that might be the way to go even if it’s less convenient.

Not familiar with the series, but I am familiar with Sid Meir. From the comment here and some Youtube footage, I am sold. Seems like the game I have always wanted to play but not able to describe. Looking forward to putting my $65 down for this one.

PC Gamer: XCOM: Enemy Unknown guide – squad builds, ET tactics, base-building strategy and more

XCOM is back! And as you’ve probably realised from our XCOM review, it’s brilliant, capturing everything we loved about the original game, but with lots of clever modern ideas thrown into the mix. The new game is different enough from the old one that even X-Com veterans could do with a few tips, never mind rookies. Thankfully I’m here to help. After spending many, many hours in the game, I’ve assembled this guide, collecting all the best tips I can offer to help you deal with the alien menace.
