Looks like this game has done what Syndicate could not (successfully update an old PC classic to modern gaming standards).

Man, this game is addictive. I've been playing all night (starting from the tutorial). I think I spent as much time customizing my guys as anything (beyond naming them, I color-coded certain specialists armor after making a careless mistake early). I'll probably start a "clean" play-through without the tutorial start, but I've had fun experimenting with things.

Graphics don't really matter much in a game like this, but they look great IMO. The AI seems pretty solid so far...very patient and calculating (The sectoids really hunker down and almost force you to take risks. Also the aliens will flank you with the quickness if you forget you're surroundings for a second. I lost a guy early on by underestimating that). I made myself a character too-though I got critically injured on my first mission and am still in recovery...frigg'n rookie.

As fun as the missions are, the meat of the game is in building your base and resources. Resources are slim. Your presented with a ton of possible options early on and, at first, it seems like you can just cruise through a bunch of upgrades. Money runs out fast though so you really are forced to settle down and prioritize. Also, there never seems to be enough engineers. It always seems like you need something you just can't get yet. I love that. The presentation of the different aspects (autopsies, builds, decisions, etc) are handled really well and I like how it's not just menus and so much is animated.

Anyway, if you can't tell, I'm completely hooked and I haven't really gotten that deep in the game at all. Time to grab a quick nap.
