For you new guys, I can't say enough about dabbling in alchemy. Kingkilla nagged about that **** when the game first dropped. Now that I've given it a shot, can't imagine a build without at least a little alchemy.

Ive finally decided to play this game. I got it when it released and just never got around to playing it. I’m already a couple of hours in and can’t wait to be lost in the world for the next couple of months.

I'm jealous of you guys just getting started. I wish I could erase my memory of everything that happened in the game and play it again with a fresh mind!

Yes. My Death March playthrough was this build. Initially it's a little rough, but once you start compounding things you just start wrecking ****.

Another piece of advice is to restart once you get the hang of the combat controls and strategies which seems to be typically around the time you exit the "training region" at the beginning of the game.

Witcher school sets are also your best allies.

What alchemy traits do you suggest for a "little alchemy"? Ill try it.

Well it’s early for me but I already upgraded potency of oils and tolerance of toxicity.

I find myself using oils and drinking potions a lot early in the game and I horde herbs, powders and pastes.

I always drift to Alchemy in all my RPG’s. I love to poison swords and have buffs always at the ready.

Then there are helpful potions that are monster specific like the one that makes your blood poisonous to vampires.

I specifically avoided alchemy for two reasons:

                  1. I want to spend as little time in menus as possible. I hate it when games have me constantly swapping gear and equipping items in menus. The whole process is immersion breaking and Witcher 3 already has enough of it. I mean, how is one set of light armor objectively better than another, especially when it's made of the same material and covers the same amount of my body, and why do I have to be level 23 to wear it? Does it just jump off my skin if I'm not that level? Or does leveling up mean I'm also learning how to dress myself?

                  2. My roommate did an alchemy build and I watched him play a few times. I could see that it was definitely powerful, but I wasn't a fan of the play-style.

No plans and we will be waiting awhile for another Witcher game. Probably 5+ years. Most everyone is working on Cyberpunk 2077 and who knows when that's coming out.

                        From an interview today.
                        • CDP RED doesn't have any plans regarding The Witcher 4, they envisioned it as a trilogy and TW3 was a definitive end to the series.
                        • Kiciński also said that they still have rights to the IP and they will probably return to do some different titles set in The Witcher world in the future. He said that both fans and investors won't forgive them if they abandon the franchise.

                        • They hope that Cyberpunk will manage to set quality bar even higher and become even more successful than TW3.
                        • Cyberpunk has already been confirmed to have an online component in the past. When Kiciński was asked about multiplayer, he was very coy and he didn't really confirmed it or deny it.
                        • The Cyperpunk team is happy with a current shape of the game, they are very anxious to finally show it to the world.

Like someone said earlier, I'll be buying Cyberpunk, blindly. This team has earned my money for about their next 3-4 games.

I can understand where you're coming from. I didn't dabble with all the various potions and alchemy benefits until my second full play through. As a game I think focusing on combat and a sign build is more streamlined, but I've never viewed Geralt as a master powers user. To me the alchemy build fits his character better.

As I said before, my fandom started with the books, specifically the Elder Blood series. I think potions are only used once, maybe twice in that series. Witchers tend to only use them in preparation for a fight or as a last resort, and are very sparing with them since they can be toxic to the user and are difficult to brew.

In the books it's mostly Geralt swordfighting and using signs. Oh, and getting eyeballed by nearly every female in existence. Happens more often than fights do.

The way the books present it, Witchers are stronger than normal men, but not by a lot, and there is overlap (A strong man could defeat a weak Witcher). Potions can push a Witcher into the "super-human" category, but the effects are temporary and there is a backlash after the effect wears off. Sometimes it can be bad enough to knock a Witcher out or leave them vulnerable.

edit: mind you it's been quite a few years since I read the books, I could be remembering them wrong. Might reread them from the beginning, definitely worth it.

                                this game...my god.

My only hope is the controls are nice and smooth. That's about it. Reading that it is much bigger in scope than W3 is mind boggling. They have spent years making it. I can not imagine the level of detail involved.
